I think Chasing Amy and Dogma were awesome. Haven't seen them lately but don't know how they'd be dated. Clerks and sequel didn't do much for me.

Dogma and clerks 3 are not rom-coms. Lol

the movie was like a remake of the first three- narcotic and safe- like heroin
jedi's are getting better and develop quicker i guess...i was really looking forward to seeing a younger sleeker more mobile jabba the hut, but that didn't happen-boo
the deep story on chewbacca was interesting... but the movie was nothing new...disneyfied...yuck in total

I do like Chasing Amy quite a bit....it might be interesting to see how the dated sexual politics of the movie play to a college audience now

I think that's an easy out for people who like the film. It's the same as saying the only reason people hated the prequals was Jar Jar.

For me, and many other fans, it was the treatment of Luke that really raised the heckles.

I liked that movie quite a bit, but the Rose subplot felt very unnecessary. The bit where she keeps tazing Fin over and over is fun.

Theres plenty of reasons to dislike the last jedi because it was absolutely awful.

I saw a recent anime movie (can't think of the name now, was 2018 though) that had bad sexual/gender politics. Audience seemed to be a lot of college/teen "weebo" types, and I didn't detect a whiff of disapproval. They laughed along with all the misogynist trash (men and women).

It was completely unnecessary. The producers introduced a character that no one needed, just to be seen to tick a diversity box and appeal to the untapped Chinese market.

The irony is the idea of a Finn/Poe romance was widely welcomed and anticipated after their screen chemistry in TFA - put Poe in Rose's role, and it's immediately a better movie.

Been all downhill since Empire Strikes Back imo, not sure why anyone even bothers at this point.

It was absolute trash garbage (some cool visuals aside) but the hardcore entitled nerds who go on Twitter to abuse the Rose actress certainly don't deserve something good.

Hence why it might be worth being in a class on Rom coms.

And the "dated" sexual politics aren't "dated" in flyover country.

Split - This was a good suspenseful thriller. It's multiple-personality-psuedo-psychology BS, but it'll do. Made me respect Shyamalan more.

Glass - I liked it I guess, but there could have been a simple fix to make me like it a lot more.

You already know if you should see this so there's little point in trying to convince you. If you're the type who likes to dunk on Shyamalan, don't bother seeing it (unless that's worthwhile for you). If you liked Unbreakable, were ok with Split, and/or are ok with Shyamalan's little Twilight Zone niche, then see it.

There are parts that I like a lot. The twists are fine and to be expected. The one thing that would convert me to a strong thumb up would be (SPOILER):

Spoiler:
A post-credits scene where it is implied that the deaths were faked or will not be permanent. I think this is implicit anyway - because they're comic book characters, it's a perfectly valid interpretation to think they'd be back. But it would have been nice to see that as canonical.

Dunn's in particular was upsetting, this is too heavy for a trashy PG-13 flick! It's somewhat hard to believe that Shyamalan would intend for the true end of that character to come from a puddle.

I've always held Unbreakable in high regard, Split was a very decent addition to the cannon, as was Glass.

To that end, I agree with all your comments particularly the spoiler. Sure, it's a flawed movie and it felt like the end of a trilogy - all the decent setup had already been achieved, and Glass ust played it out in a somewhat formulaic way.

However, if you like the rest in the series, I doubt you be disappointed - just don't expect to be blown away either.

A couple I watched in the past few days

Bladerunner 2049 Hmmm? It was easily one of the longest movies I have seen in a while. No further comment.

Molly's Game I really wanted to like this one and it did have a few moments but it just seemed hollow. It seemed like there was really a great movie in there somewhere but it just never came out.

I liked Unbreakable when I first saw it, but I didn't "love" it until time passed. It defies some expectations in a similar way as Glass (particularly with regards to endings) and felt unsatisfying at first. I wonder if I'll appreciate Glass more with time.

Side note, I saw a bunch of forum comments that hate the ending title card of Unbreakable. I haven't seen the movie in over a decade, but I'm pretty sure I like the end title card a lot.

Spoiler:
"...taken to a hospital for the criminally insane" or whatever is such a perfect comic book thing, it's obvious what it implies.

Are there any movies that are someone's Greatest Movie Ever that will never appear on any serious lists of greatest movies ever? Well, this movie should be on that list.

Where Eagles Dare 1968
As much fantasy as Lord of the Rings filtered through a Bond sensibility as any war movie you've ever seen, this jolly romp where Eastwood shoots and blows up everything that moves and Burton messes up the orderly German minds with his torrent of flim-flam, this is a top-notch romp through the mountains of the Rhineland.

Even what appears at first glance to be the token girl is a total badass so half a point extra for the positive female character. She can machine-gun nazis on a par with Eastwood.

5/5

This is Villenueve's Canadian feature that swept the 2010 Genies, about the mass shooting at a Montreal college in 1989 where 14 women were murdered by an anti-feminist nutjob.

This is a beautiful, heartbreaking majestic film. The luminous Karine Vanasse plays a student who wants to be a flight engineer, and her life is forever changed by tragedy.

The narrative jumps around from before the shooting, as the gunman prepares his massacre, to the after effects of the shooting. Villenueve bookends the movie with two very different letters, one angry and confusing and the other sad but hopeful.

It's shot in a gorgeous black-and white that also, thankfully, helps mask all of the blood while not shying away from the shocking violence.

Polytechnique is a great, masterful film, and one that needs to be better known.

Polytechnique is amazing, hopeful, depressing and one of my favourite French Canadian flicks.

Dom, I would highly recommend checking out Villeneuve's first movie, August 32nd on Earth (not sure where one could find it nowadays... I was actually one of the 3 people at the theatre to see it when it came out (Quebec lacked terrible at promoting its own movies back in the 90s, even if the province invested proportionally a tremendous amount in its own cinema )).

Another French Canadian movie I would highly suggest, is A Travers les Brumes, the hopeful and morbid story of Andre Fortin, AKA the lead singer of the band Les Colocs.

In my pursuit of finding Rom-Coms to show in class, I watched The Big Sick again yesterday. I think I will use it, but it's a bit too close to my own life, so I found myself a little overwhelmed by parts of it. I know we've talked about the big laugh line in the film, but I loved Ray Romano's "Who goes to a math conference to get laid?"

Tonight I watched High Fidelity again today. I might have students consider how music is used in Rom-Coms for one assignment, so that goes on the supplemental list of recommended films.
