in all seriousness though, i absolutely adored how they spent so much money creating elaborate fantastical sets in poor things, like how the imagined lisbon was just amazing film

i now worry about visiting lisbon, i've never been, always been meaning to go, but i don't think i'll ever witness sufficient wonder and magic and free flowing titties as i will expect due to that film

It really was spectacular. I worked on a film in early 2022 that, if it wasn’t a low budget indie, would have looked a lot like Poor Things. We tried but it was originally a theater piece that Covid made it become a film.

Watching this while hiking through small town America getting treated to a free dinner from the owner of this pizza joint and the volume just low enough that the dialogue gets drowned out by the sound mix is the nuts

Is there a difference between a collector and someone who just has a lot of stuff of the same kind?

^ exactly what comes to mind...

dewey decimal for life!

Ive tried by genre, by director and by year... But I keep coming back to alpha numeric for simplicity sake.

I am at roughly 900+ titles in 4k uhd/bluray/dvd... another 700 in cd/dvd-a/bluray audio and 650 in Vinyl... and streaming isn't an option for me personally.

Why 4k uhd, bluray AND dvd? some titles are only available in those specific formats... If I want to watch Boogie Nights, The Dish, What's up Tiger Lily OR High Fidelity... I need to know that I have to look in my DVD section because those films have never been released any other way.

you would have thought I had learned my lesson after the Laser Disk market crash, but I didnt. At the end, I have 800+ laser disk titles, and those movies were 40$-150$+ ea.

MSchu,

I don't see you as a collector, just someone who buys what you like. You do have a collection.

I have @200 bottles of cologne, but I'm definitely not a collector although I do have a collection.

Some people collect for the sake of collecting.

Showed In the Mood for Love in class tonight. Told the students they could leave when the film was done. Not one left. They stayed to ask questions and share observations.

This is a fun class.

One of my classes is writing. I teach MLA research but stay away from comma splices.

Friend sends me the NY Times review of The Substance, saying it's just the kind of movie I think you would enjoy. Now what would make anyone think that?

The teaser trailer.

Just watched Civil War. Uhhhh? I really wanted to see this when it first came out then I read some reviews and took a pasadena. The reviews which panned it didn't do it justice. It was way worse than that! It was totally pointless and nonsensical. The first thing anyone on either ambiguos side of this conflict would do is kill the annoying press. I was really rooting for that!

A buddy of mine saw this last night and without even having to think about, picked it as his favorite film of 2024. Before that, it was Love Lies Bleeding. He did say to know as little as possible going in and whatever you’re expecting, it’s probably twice that. It’s Titane times 2!! I can’t wait for it come to streaming

The Lovers directed by Azazel Jacobs.

The film is about a couple who are both cheating on each other. They have both promised their lovers after the couple's son comes for a weekend from college that they will divorce.

The couple is played by Debra Winger and Tracy Letts, both wonderful in their roles. The lovers, played by the Melora Walters and Aiden Dillen, do not wait patiently for the son's arrival.

The twist is that the couple begin to rekindle their love for each other. (At one point, Walters asks Letts if he's ****ing his wife.) The couple, cheating on each other begin cheating on their lovers.

Any more plot description would spoil the film.

I love that both women, especially Winger, can go from looking a bit frumpy to almost radiant at times. Tracy Letts delivers his usual stellar performance. There's a great scene, played out with the slightest of looks and gestures, in which the couple have sex for what might be the first time in years.

I loved this film. Independent films allow actors like Debra Winger and Tracy Letts to shine and show their age.

On Criterion.

If you have Kanopy, go and watch An Irish Goodbye. It won the academy award for best short film. It's sweet and charming and one of those films that you'll remember when others have faded from memory.
