Supermarket Deli - Go To Item? Supermarket Deli - Go To Item?

I am thinking of heading to the deli tomorrow to buy a few things to make sandwiches with during the day (I work from home so it's easier to stay home and make lunch)

I've always just bought the packaged lunch meat (ham, turkey, bologna and fried it up)

NEVER have I ordered a single thing from the deli.

What's something I should try? I like pretty much all hams, turkeys, roast beef, salami, pepperoni, etc etc. Willing to try new things.

As a 5' 7" 125lb guy, how much should I order in terms of lbs?

Thanks in advance!

I posted this in another forum I frequent and I'm hearing a lot of good things about Boar's Head meat? Also lots of recommendations to get everything cut as thin as they can?

Not all supermarket delis are created equal. I don't frequent them and when I do buy something it is usually proscuitto or some other salty pork product that I need in small quantity for a particular recipe. I've also been known to get dolmas or a salad if it looks amazing.

Only had Boars Head meats on a sandwich once. It's like 3-4x the price of other deli meats so I won't be buying it.

When I hit the deli I usually just grab some sort of Honey Turkey Breast(Thin and Trim brand usually) and Swiss Cheese(Finlandia).

deciding how much to buy is usually dependent on the regularity with which you go to the deli. i'd start with trying a few different things at 1/4 or 1/3 lb at a time. i usually get hungarian salami, smoked ham, gouda cheese @ 1/4lb each and get thru it in about a week. buying too much kinda sucks because after 5-6 days in the fridge the taste sorta gets compromised.

pro tip: ask to try something before you order it, most places let you sample stuff for free

whatever you buy, don't buy it in pounds.

The glory that is a deli case is the variety of flavours, available ONE slice at a time. They have this marvelous invention called a digital scale that will allow you to buy as many small amounts you want. What goes for meats also applies to cheeses.

So get adventurous and experiment. What's the worst that can happen, you don't like that particular sandwich and just make another.

Yeah I was thinking I'd get everything in smaller portions. 1/2 lb, 1/4 lb, whatever I'm allowed.

I usually buy whatever's on sale, unless it's boiled ham. My favorites are smoked turkey and Finlandia swiss. I use a 2:1 meat:cheese ratio. My store now has a terminal to enter your order, so you can just enter the order when you get to the store, and they announce when your order number is ready. Reduces human contact to zero, and you still get freshly sliced cold cuts.

Smoked turkey is the nut deli meat IMO. Swiss traditionally goes with turkey but I usually order the sharp cheddar.

boar's head makes a passable roast beef. I have yet to find another brand that does. expensive, but worth it.

i don't know if it varies by region, but boars head is like $8.49/lb vs $7.49 or 7.99/lb for store brand or other brands for me.

Just depends on your market I guess. Within a half mile of my house are 3 big name supermarkets. For example at one store Land O Lakes American is reg priced $3.99/lb. Right next door it's reg price $7.99. Same with turkey breast. Always on sale for $3.99/lb. Thin and Trim one week, Sara Lee, Jennie O, and then the store brand. They rotate but always 3.99/lb. Next door they advertise their store brand at 7.99/lb.

I'm gonna check next time I go to the expensive place that carries Boars Head and see what the prices are.

I've wanted this more than I've ever wanted something before. Wtf I skip the deli so often due to the line not dying out

Checked out Boars Head at the supermarket today and their sliced turkey breast was $9.79/lb. So 2.5x, I exaggerated a lil.

I really like the Boars Head roast beefs and pastramis. Cant reall tell the difference with their other products.

Recently I have become addicted to the Whole Foods deli experience. They have pretty much anything under the sun you could ask for. In the cheese section there is a small basket with the trimmings of larger pieces you can buy for a few bucks. Great way to sample a variety of cheeses.

boar's head buffalo chicken breast is well worth the price. a guy should have a good sandwich every now and again.
get creative with the cheese selection (smoked gouda or provolone have been recent choices) and use some good bread (sliced extra sourdough recently as well, but i also like rye). by all means things should be warmed up/toasted to get max flavor. toast the bread a little, preheat the meat in a pan just to take the chill off, possibly sautee some onion along with the meat, build the sandwich on two slices of bread with cheese on top then pop into the oven open-faced style to melt the cheese. your choice to use a spicy mustard or other condiment (beaver jalepeno ftw) before the oven, and lettuce/pickle/tomato/cracked black pepper to taste when it's done.

if that's too much work, just eat the buffalo chicken breast with cheese and crackers....it's that good. the BH turkey pastrami is also delicious, but wants the rye bread/horseradish/swiss combo for max effect, and some kraut if you have the good stuff.

Get hold of some decent salt beef.
Heat up in microwave and serve in a lightly toasted poppy seed bagel with pickled dill / gherkin and American mustard.

Delicious!

Since OP is looking to make sandwiches, the only thing you must have on a sandwich is either honey mustard or horseradish mustard. I like to make my own honey mustard. I find the store bought stuff just isn't all that sweet.

I would never microwave anything unless there's no other option. Maybe lightly grill instead?
