Star Wars - The Last Jedi is pretty good Star Wars - The Last Jedi is pretty good

Thought I'd attempt to drag the Last Jedi hate and love into its own thread so the poor old movie threadzilla can recover.

I've seen it twice, here are the two sets of thoughts on it each time.

Review 1:

Decent star wars movie without the clean through-line of Force Awakens, but has some decent comedy (and some that doesn't land), some fantastic space battles and some badass Jedi moments, but the script went on the odd sprawl here and there and could have done with one or two more goes on the rewrite treadmill to polish off a few of the rougher story edges (the characters and dialogue were good to great).

One big plus: it wasn't predictable in most of its major plot points.

4/5

Review 2:
On rewatch, even better. The niggles fall away, and the spectacle becomes more, er, spectacular.

4/5

I've been thinking about it for a few days and saw some guy's critique on the internet that I thought hit the nail on the head and explains why, even though both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are good, I'm still bored of the series.

The original trilogy was about a scrappy upstart rebellion going up against Space Nazis and at the end of the third one winning. The prequels, for however bad they were, and they were bad, told how the original scrappy upstart Rebellion were actually in power and how by the third one they had lost all power and created the Space Nazis. So we come to this trilogy............. and we're right back at a scrappy upstart rebellion fighting against Space Nazis. Story wise it's hitting all the major plot points as the first trilogy.

The fundamental reason why TLJ is so bad I think boils down to one solitary factor.

That no one is acting as the custodian of the story behind the scenes like Lucas in the original trilogy. No overall story has been planned out for all 3 films to act as a template. The directors have been allowed to basically do what they want for their film with seemingly no grand strategy. Just about everything JJ set up to happen has been ripped apart by Rian Johnston and now they've panicked and got JJ back for part 3.

I think there are more basic problems with the movie and an individual movie. The pacing is poor - lots of people are saying that it felt like it dragged and I agree with that. There's a fair bit of bloat in the film because they need to give each character a certain amount of screen time to support their toys and merchandise campaigns. This crass need to meet Disney's business objectives shows in the product.

Also the tone is inconsistent. There's nothing wrong with changes in tone - any sufficiently epic movie will cover comedy, romance, etc. along with the drama and action. But in a well made film the tone doesn't shift so jarringly.

There are many good parts to this movie. The Ren/Rey/Snoke throne room scene is close to peak Star Wars. But the whole thing doesn't fit together to create a coherent experience. It looks like the kind of product you get when you have a "too many cooks" situation.

Same, im getting pretty bored with star wars. I love 4 and 5, and really like 6 and 3(yep)
But this new trilogy.. they are okay, but meh. I do like what they have done with the lightsaber battles, that is much better than the prequels where they were dancing around. Some eye rolling moments in ep 8 when leia floated trough space and the whole finn and rose romance.

Now its han solo and ep 9.. Hopefully something completely different after those, because there is so much potential. Probably, we are getting star wars every year for the next 20 years.

Just saw it. It was okay. Moved the story along as well as leaving the door opened for more. But damn, I am Star Warsed out. I went and saw it out of obligation since it is Star Wars which has been part of my life since it began. I'm sure I will see the next one when it comes out too. But I just don't care anymore. The original trilogy was great. The prequels were bad and the new breed are okay. I haven't connected with any of the new characters at all and now that the old breed is gone I lose a lot of interest.

I have watched the first 15 minutes and will not judge the movie off that but the acting and writing is awful, why do all the bad guys sound so pompous? G Lucas was a terrible writer anyway but this is next level bad.

I finally got around to watching this; I had put it off in part because of how terrible the reviews were. Honestly, I don't think it was *that* bad, although there are some critical flaws.

Story is just inexcusably too long, especially for a movie that's aimed at younger audiences. Lots of things should have been left on the cutting room floor: the whole casino planet and hacker bit, the vice admiral subplot (why is a vice-admiral dressed up for a cocktail party?), Captain Phasma showing up for no reason, too much time was spent puttering around on Ireland (gorgeous, tho). Having Admiral Ackbar punch in his ticket offscreen is horrible fanservice.

On the plus side, there were some great visuals --especially loved the homage to classic WWII bomber movies in the opening bit. Adam Driver always delivers a rock-solid performance, and the will-he-turn-won't-he story of Kylo and Rey has some legitimately suspenseful moments for those who managed to stay awake, as did the cat-and-mouse starship pursuit. also, the blue milk reference was a solid deep cut that made me lol. As always, the John Williams soundtrack is almost worth the whole price of admission.

idk about pretty good, but not nearly the utter disaster I was expecting.

Captain Phasma was pointless throughout the movies. Underwritten and underused. Waste of a character.

I can't wait for the "Jabba the Hutt" origin movie... I'd love to see where all the Hutts came from and how much debauchery and nudity they could stuff into a star wars universe gangster movie.

They're really missing half the boat by only portraying the positive characters.

Not sure how much nudity and debauchery they can work into a franchise that's largely marketed to kids.

The stormtrooper leader that Finn is obsessed with beating that has been onscreen for maybe 10 mins total between the 2 movies.

It is a garbage movie with terrible writing and I for one will not pay to see another star wars movie in theaters until it has wild glowing awesome reviews, universally.

The plot and story was awful, it was not even a star wars movie it was so unreal

I did not think it was very good at all. Truly awful writing, overly long, and I just didn't really care much. Meh.
