Voyager and TNG both used time travel and alternate times to end the series. As long as the characters are somewhat consistent and Tarantino doesn’t compromise on his vision, whatever it is, to end up with a half assed product trying to please everyone, I think things can work out.
I'm reading a little into his quote above, but it seems like he's talking less about an alternate timeline and more like the "Star Wars 7 and 8" situation where JJ did his JJ thing and set up a bunch of dangling threads and the Johnson came in and said "All those mysteries we set up last time are dumb and don't have answers." As a JJ hater, I loved it, but I can't say it didn't make for 2 pretty awful films.
QT would be perfect for a film set in the Mirror Universe with it's darker setting and violence, but if he just wants to come in and say "All that stuff from Into Darkness was misdirection, here's the
real Khan" I think he's going to be a tough road to hoe.
