I think she wanted more lines, which is why they threw her a bone with her terrible speech about her home world. Even O'Brien had a better back story than Tasha though.

Jfc what show were they watching? Okay, he became a bit of a caricature in later seasons, but he was pretty much the only reason to watch the first couple of seasons.

Nice to see the underused Tuvok get some love as well - only other character to poll 1% was Picard.

If they're going to list Wesley as an option, they gotta list Jake Sisko too right? I mean he's in the opening credits!

I agree- Quark and Tuvok are both personal favorites in mine.

ST TNG S5E07 + 8: Unification 1+2



Pretty ambitious pair of episodes, bringing in Spock and dealing with matters galactic - involving Vulcans, Humans, Romulans, Klingons and Ferengi - among others. We have Riker playing detective AND keyboard virtuoso, a swan song for Sarek, and the rather fantastic trio of Spock, Data and Picard - imagine if that trifecta went on to more adventures?

And Sela, daughter of Tasha Yar, up to her shenanegins - with a particularly weak takeover Vulcan plan.


There's numerous good scenes, a few clangers and some great ones - often whenever Picard is on screen, or when Spock and Data interact. Standouts are the scene between Sarek and Picard, the brief scene between Data and Spock talking about humanity - Nimoy was amazing with his few lines - and the final scene between Picard and Spock where they mind meld.

I'm not crazy about Unification. The Enterprise bits are just dull and clearly there to give the crew something to do. Sela also feels very shoehorned into the whole plot - she was a good-not-great character, and should probably just have had her own episode for her swansong.

That said, the Spock/Data scene has a great build and very subtly delivers, and Stewart is obviously great too. I also really enjoyed the scene were Picard is trying to sleep.... they just really needed lots more Steward, Spiner and Nimoy, and then it would have been a contender for best TNG episode.

As it is, 7/10.

Picard's veiled threat to one of Gowron's underlings to obtain a cloaked ship is one of my favorite Picard moments.

Oh yeah, that was great.

I do have a soft spot for the scenes where Riker is badassing up the bar.

A+. What's impressive to me is how much the writers knew they had a hardcore fanbase that would know ST lore. It's assumed the viewer is familiar with Sarek and Spock, the saga of Gowron, the neutral zone and the various political relations between Starfleet, the Romulans, Klingons, and the Ferengi. That may not be so impressive in 2018 when every show has a wiki and multi-year story arcs, but back in the day there were few shows that could pull this kind of thing off. The payoff is a true space opera with an epic scale.

People have already mentioned my favorite scenes. Love the bits with Picard on board the Klingon ship getting trolled by the Klingon officer.

That might be my favorite scene. Also this exchange:

Sela: "I rather enjoy writing. I don't get to do it very often in this job."
Data: "Perhaps you would be happier in another job."

The antenna station is on this set of episodes this week (presumably they're sequential) where we're in the Beardless Riker Zone.

ST TNG S5E09: A Matter of Time

Quirky future historian visits the Enterprise whilst they are on a life-saving mission and annoys everyone by mildly irritating them in almost every scene. Almost puts the moves on Crusher successfully, the dawg, and finally leading to quite a disappointing reveal in the last act after the rather intriguing setup

Why? Time Travel was accepted as possible (and accomplished, but with risk) in TOS. Why would it be a treated as a big deal 3/4 century later?

I agree with the ratings, but Best of Both Worlds is better than Unification for the reason that they blew more **** up.

A Matter of Time seem to drag on and the novelty of the flim flam time traveler wore-off. The actor was convincing though. Ending was decent, but the middle dragged-on. He also played a lead in another sci-fi series...



Picard had a good board-room dialogue about Temporal Logic 101 from the Academy.
