Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

The PSA episode was a waste of time except for the "your neutrenos are drifting" line. Shut-up Wesley!

I think in the very first TNG episode there's a PSA bit where Tasha Yar tells Wesley all about the drug problems on her homeworld. It's gloriously hamfisted.

I do remember doubletaking at the TV when the word 'rapegang' was used.

Wow, it's even more cringe-worthy than I remember:

How many episodes are there where the ship would've been captured if not for Data?

well you have to subtract episodes where Data is overtaken by Soong.exe and commandeers the ship himself

Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

There's an over-the-air antenna station that plays 4 hours of various Star Trek iterations every weeknite.

The episode airing now, which I have never seen and just turned on, is from TOS. It appears to be on a planet that's emulated ancient Roman/Greek culture.

Spock is cracking up laughing, and Kirk is on his hands and knees pretending to be a horse while a little person is riding him.

Fantastic scene.

The episode is Plato's Stepchildren where one class rules with magical superpowers over another because of some phenomenon. I'm reading it, says it's the episode that's the first interracial kiss.

I really like Plato's Stepchildren. I think it explores themes of abuse and victimhood quite well, and is underrated.

This was a big deal back in the day. TV execs almost left that part out of fear that it would generate a storm of controversy. Shatner and Nichols both figured that show was going to be cancelled anyway, so why not make history.

It was not a whole class of people, but rather only the lone midget servant. I also thought the dialogue on abuse was quite good.

Also broke ground with the first interracial kiss on US TV.

Although it's not widely advertised, I think they also broadcast the first human-on-alien sexual harassment scenes too at some point.

Between Kirk and Riker the show broke a lot of ground.

Kirk probably beat Riker to that (by today's standards, at least)

Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

Nobody cared about Tasha's home world. Nobody.

Her send-off was horrible too with that blob character. That's up there for worst of Next Gen. She was a much better character when they re-incarnated her as a Romulan.

Both TOS and TNG had a bunch of solid female characters that were criminally underwritten. Tasha Yar as a badass security officer would have been cool, except we already have Worf as the badass security officer. It makes no sense, and you can understand why Denise Crosby walked away from it.

They should have made her an alien. Then maybe we are interested in the home world. Very bland character. I liked the episodes where they brought her back.

I blame the writing. Very bland for Star Trek. The blob episode was terrible.
