To be clear, I don't think Dwight Schultz did a bad job, it's just the way the story was written really belabored the point.

ST TNG S3E21: The Most Toys

Fun episode, where Data gets kidnapped by a collector, Kivas. It's got some fun and dramatic writing, and Saul Rubinek brings a great energy to the role of Kivas. I like the conundrum Data is put into, and the somewhat unresolved relationship between Data and Kivas. Solid.

Also, Kivas' assistant reminded me of Caitlyn Jenner

Max Fun now has a podcast dedicated to ST:TNG at http://www.maximumfun.org/shows/greatest-generation

I haven't listened to it, so I have no idea if it's any good or not.

Always fun to watch Bret Spiner, plus the villain is great in this one. Reminds me very much of The Collector from Guardians of the Galaxy. There aren't a lot of ST characters who are just straight-up evil like that, which is probably due to the Roddenberry influence --maybe the Ferengi come close.

There's a very ambiguous ending here. Did Data just lie to Riker? Does he really feel no joy in seeing Kivas locked up?

The Ferengi?

The Ferengi???

The most laughably cartoonish enemy ever created???

Data did lie to Riker, he was straight up going to kill Kivas. IIRC he is not capable of feeling joy.

Fun (well not really) fact about this episode. David Rappaport, the little person from Time Bandits, was cast as Kivas. They actually began filming with him as Kivas, but he attempted suicide during the shoot so the part was recast. Rappaport later successfully killed himself a few months later.

ST TNG S3E23: Sarek

Rather wonderful episode, with a great turn by Mark Lenard as a great man brought low by age and disease, wishing to fulfil a useful mission whilst railing against his own condition. Patrick Stewart does steal the show, though, as Picard mindmelded to Sarek, and having to suffer through his anguish, anger and despair.

ST TNG S3E24: Menage A Troi

A mishmash episode that's not as irritating as it could be, involving Ferengi, Lwaxana Troi and Wesley needing to go off to a starfleet entrance exam that only runs once a year, even though it's the entire student feeder for the fleet...

It was kind of fun to see Lwaxana sexually service a Ferengi without realising it, and see the end where Picard needs to act jealous and starts channelling Shakespeare when he gets tongue-tied initially.

It's the episode that provides the scene for the Picard meme "How the ****...". That's worth 2 rating points right there IMO.

The only episode I would give extra points for memetasticness is The Royale

diebitter is spot on with his rating of the stupid barclay episode. It was awful, a whole 50 minutes about a non-regular's confidence problems?

I thought they established that he wasn't capable of lying? Maybe that's just Spock.

Love seeing Lenard and Stewart play off of each other. This is an atypically somber episode --it's not often ST deals with the inevitability of aging and mental illness. Some of the best elements from both TOS and TNG are in this episode; I imagine it's the kind of thing Roddenberry was aiming for with TNG.

Any Lwaxana Troi episode gets a base score of 1, Picard meme bumps it up to 3. db's rating is on point.

Fans of obscure ST characters rejoice: the episode Sarek introduces Ensign Gates, who will appear in a whopping 46 episodes. She's like the Lt. Kyle for the new generation.

Spock at one point claims that "Vulcans never bluff," although perhaps he was lying about that.

Probably, besides...

1. Spock's half human, and 2. Vulcans aren't logical by nature, it's a cultural discipline.

I think she was also Kevin's teacher in a random Wonder Years episode.

(she wasn't a bad actress)

ST TNG S3E25: Transfigurations

A little dull but worthy, feeling like a Roddenberry-fetish episode from season 1. I'm assuming this was a dusted off script from season 1 so as to give the writers a really good run up to the season finale. We do see Worf getting peeved at LaForge being timid around women, and then LaForge getting all confident with the cutie Christy Henshaw, which is fun.

The whole plot was very messianic and let's all hug each other though, and a little saccharine for my taste.

I have watched TNG runs at least half a dozen times, and I can't even remember this one.

LaForge episodes tend to be pretty poor and forgettable generally though - not perhaps Lwaxana bad, but definitely Deanna bad.

It's not really a LaForge episode. He gets sidelined early. It's more a Space Jesus episode, with Beverley Crusher crushing on the messiah.
