ST TNG S3E14 A Matter of Perspective

I'm a sucker for courtroom drama, and rather enjoyed this Star Trek riff on Rashomon. It's also riffing on a few old series' episodes featuring courtroom scenes. Rather fun and keeps up a nice pace and mystery till the end.

I did laugh at Riker's recollection of a incident between him and a lady as her throwing herself at him, and she remembering him as being all rapey, and Troi telling him that both versions are true as they are the way each person remembers it. Oh, Riker, you date rapist!

Fun fact, the actor who plays the scientist also plays Tio Salamanca in Breaking Bad. Probably the second most notable appearance of a Salamanca in a Star Trek episode.

I agree "A Matter of Perspective" isn't classic-level stuff, but it's a very watchable howdunnit.

One of those episodes i'll always watch if it's on TV.

If anyone has trouble sleeping or likes ambient white noise when you work or study, I found a phone app called Trek Sounds. The free version has three engine sounds, the 99cent version includes like 12 more.

I used it today when my roommates where being loud and it was awesome.

Just an FYI.

Agree. This one wasn't spectacular imo, but John de Lancie's Q is something I can watch all day long. Particularly enjoy Data and Q going back and forth; both superhuman characters with very different attitudes toward humanity.

I always assumed it was some sort of repressed guilt that unsettles Q. As I understand it, the Q/Guinan backstory is something that's really never been fleshed out in the franchise.

ST TNG S3E15 Yesterday's Enterprise

Very fine episode, exploring a conundrum - if a ship escapes a battle accidentally in the past, and it affects the timelines now, should it be returned to the battle (and be destroyed there) to correct the aberration? Which timeline is the most valid? It's a well written and explored piece served perfectly in the 40 odd minutes given, and gives us a single-episode helping of Tasha Yar (not killed in this timeline).

Pretty damn good, and with my favourite pre-credit sequence in all of Star Trek: The Next Generation...

"Let's make sure history never forgets....the name.....Enterprise"

Great Episode. Sometimes hard to rank the very best TNG episodes, but this would be a strong contender for any top 5.

We've seen a handful of courtroom drama/CSI-style episodes which usually make for a nice change of pace. This one reminds me a little bit of the TOS episode Wolf in the Fold, where Scotty gets accused of murder. Nothing amazing, but a good watch. tbh, my favorite moment was the intro scene, where Data masterfully trolls Picard.

ST TNG S3E16: The Offspring

Another very fine episode, where Data creates a child, who adopts an adult female persona, only to have Starfleet decide they wish to have the creation under their own study and guidance. It did look like it was going to be corny to start, but it was in many respects a retread of the excellent episode 'Measure of a Man', amplifying it to address themes of parenthood and responsibility. It contains two beautiful speeches, one after the other, from Data, then from Picard. I was genuinely moved.

Any episode that showcases Spiner and Stewart's acting ability is going to be a good one, and that's a great scene.

Honestly, I give this 10/10. Great concept, great to see Yar's character given a more proper send-off. The idea of correcting a future timeline is a classic sci-fi trope, but this episode really explores the idea that the "corrupted" timeline has its own legitimate right to exist.

Also, prune juice scene is elite Worf. A WARRIOR'S DRINK!

Brent Spiner and the sincerity he brought to the role really made this episode work. It could have easily backfired into a corny mess.

Also this episode is responsible for one of my favorite ST gifs:

ST TNG S3E17: Sins of the Father

Another terrific episode, with family honour among Klingons, and Worf meeting his long-lost brother (a good performance by Tony Todd as the unlikeable brother). Great premise, tight, exciting script, and Picard is a badass. But we all knew that.

It's also our introduction into Klingon politics, which will pop up periodically throughout the series.

ST TNG S3E18: Allegiance

Whilst this does use the old 'aliens watching us like lab rats' trope, it's more fun than most because it contains some very entertaining stuff between Picard and Beverly Crusher. Picard wants a little Beverley, and Beverley wants a little Captain lovin, and it's funny when Picard kicks her out after getting her all revved up. Some good acting from those two, and good writing too.

I give it 10/10 just because I'm a huge fan of the Worf character.

Worf trying to reconcile his Klingonness with his humanity is in some way similar to Spock in A Journey to Babel, but we can see how much the show has changed now that Roddenberry isn't calling the shots. The characters have fundamental differences that can't be worked out, people in authority are corrupt and cowardly, and Worf has to abandon part of his Klingon self-identity. It's a much darker ending than anything we'd see in TOS or seasons 1-2 of TNG.

Anytime I see Wesley Crusher or Guinan in an episode, I just want to puke.
You just know the episode is gonna suck.
Any thoughts on how to prevent this?

The writing for Worf was so much better than many of the other characters, and that's both a plaudit and a criticism. Another shift away from the Roddenberry influence is the Worf story arc moving forward, and this mini-cliffhanger is a great example of that, with the thread being picked up in later episodes.

While I wouldn't give any individual episode 10/10, overall it is great writing that really develops the Worf character.
