STAR TREK TNG S1E05 The Last Outpost

This one gets big props for introducing the Ferengi, but in other respects its kind of embarrassing. Picard saying 'merde' must have seemed cosmopolitan in the 90s, but it sounds very uncharacteristic now - as does his snapping at data for reciting assorted facts.

The ending in particular, with the WASPish Ryker proving himself a superior being to the weaselly Ferengi, was a little too 50s for my liking.

Star Trek TNG S1E06 Where No One has Gone Before

The one where a weird alien guy reckons Wesley Crusher is a genius when it comes to engines and warps and stuff. You truly want to punch Wesley in the face by the end of this one.

Isnt that pretty much every episode he's central in?

I guess. I just don't remember the focus on him episodes being this annoying though.

The Ferengi were an inspired addition to the franchise. With the end of the Cold War the Federation/Klingon tension felt out of date. The series needed a new foil for the touchy-feely Federation. The Last Outpost had NO Wesley in it, making it one of the better S1 episodes. Also, Data getting caught in a Chinese finger trap is classic.

And then we're back to Wesley episodes, the kid gets a field promotion to "acting Ensign", which makes not a lick of sense. My theory about these is that the producers wanted to attract younger viewers to the series, so they made Wesley prominent.

Worf's pet boar was adorable, though. The wild boar Emmy-Lou would... well, let's just say she left her own special mark on the show.

In other respects? It's hard to imagine something more embarrassing than the Ferengi.

I can't believe there are people who actually approve of the ridiculous Ferengi addition to the list of Federation enemy races. Am I the only one who thinks that they were one of, if not the worst, creation in the history of Star Trek? In fact, I thought that the Ferengi was such a fail that they had to come up with a different enemy race so they created the Cardassians. And what an improvement that was!

*shrug* I thought the Ferengi were fun. Never cared for the Cardssians, no personality.

I forgot to mention that The Last Outpost features Armin Shimerman, who will go on to play Quark in DS9.

The best thing that show ever did was The Borg.

I agree, though they are an obvious ripoff of Dr Who's Cybermen. I also think Q was a great addition.

One thing I've learned from Star Trek is that you can glue a horn onto a regular animal and it becomes a space animal.

I thought the Ferengi were stupid.

I liked Wesley. There, I said it and I feel good about myself.

I didn't care for the Ferengi in TNG - they were much better in DS9.

The Cardasians struck me as "Romulan light" - meh

The Borg were great in their first appearance, but they got old really fast - A resilient irresistible force that swallowed whole civilizations, yet the Enterprise beat them every time.

Hated the character he played, but Wil Wheaton seems like a pretty cool guy. He's got his own line of beer, too.

Since Wil Wheaton ist talked about and diebitter is in the middle of season 1, it would be a shame not to link to the reviews Wheaton wrote for most of the first season: http://www.aoltv.com/bloggers/wil-wheaton
Highly recommended, especially his behind the scenes memories at the end of each article.

I think he also did season 2, but only available in some book or something.

Who were a much more obvious rip off of Gort... If fact, Dr Who is just a low budget TDTESS with a time travel gimmick.

Q was great though. I think the perhaps missed a trick not having a Q movie.... not sure of the wider appeal, but there is just so much you can do with Q.

Ferengi looked so ridiculous that it was impossible to take them seriously as antagonists, and Cardassians were just over-thinking things as it would have been a great opportunity to develop the Romulans.

Star Trek TNG S1E07 Lonely among us

Another one that's a bit of a stinker, with some terrible dramatic dissonance (man dies? Let's laugh at Data!), plot whackamole and allround bad writing, but I did like the reptilian race makeup, and I definitely liked Data doing Holmes, no matter how innapropriate it was to the tone of the episode.

I normally like D.C. Fontana episodes, but there's just nothing really notable about this one, except for Data's emerging fascination with Sherlock Holmes, which will be revisited in a later episode.

Riker also hints that Picard is a reader of "private-eye" detective stories, which we'll see more of later in S1. I think at least one of the TNG writers was a fan of mysteries and film noir.
