My older brother and I used to call our younger brother Kraco. Not because he was like this character, but it just seemed like a good name to tease him with. Still do call him Kraco sometimes - he's 41yo.

I mostly agree. Although I love the episodes with Q, John De Lancie.

I can watch the original series over and over.

I like all the TOS episodes where they are reflecting somehow on earth history. The gangster one, the gunfight at the ok corral one, the Nazi one, and the one where they go somewhere that's like Rome, but in the 20th century.


I have a nagging feeling that Kraco makes great chilli.

And I think all the TNG ones with the Borg, Data's backstory, and Q are fantastic (and some, but not all, of the Klingon ones).

I use Worf's "Captain incoming message" as my message alert on my phone. Cracks people up or catches their attention every time. Occasionally I do get the "hey you're not 12 look". Fortunately I'm at the IDGAF stage of life.

Still remember running home from school for as long I can remember to watch the TOS at 4pm. (2 channels back in those days, no vcr/dvr) If I missed the opening "Space, the final frontier...." I felt like my day was ruined.

The Man Trap SEASON 1, EPISODE 01

Reasonable, but not outstanding, episode, chosen by the TV executives as the one to open the series. There's been debate why they chose this, as it's not quite as exciting as some of the other early episodes they could have gone with, but it's serviceable, and has some decent dramatic tension. One thing that is really outstanding and surprising about this and the other early episodes is how much they're getting right - the whole Kirk/McCoy/Spock dynamic is in place right from the get-go, and this episode shows them off nicely. It also has Uhura doing quite a lot of lines, and setting her character up in an interesting way. She baits Spock about being tired of hearing the word 'frequency' and starting to feel like part of the equipment. I liked that little scene.

We also see Yoeman Rand and Sulu off the bridge - Sulu has got some weird plants, I can tell you.

And whilst some crew members die, none of them are wearing red


I'm watching the new remastered version of these series, and they do look quite spectacular - this is a nice restoration.


I'm not going to score these ones, I think I'm just going to start putting each and every episode into my favourite order, highest first, and I'll ignore the Pike-centric pilot that was never aired. So to start:


1. The Man Trap

McCoy, the only man more powerful than James T Kirk on NCC 1701

The Man Trap isn't the most action-packed or wildly imaginative Trek episode ever, but I really liked it. There's plenty of character-driven drama between McCoy and Kirk. There's a lot of tension toward the end. Bones and Uhura both get a few good scenes. At one point, we get to see things from the space creature's perspective as a near-extinct species simply doing what it has to do to survive --that's a nice Roddenberry touch that elevates the episode a cut above a generic "space monster eats spacemen" sci-fi affair. Overall it's a low-key but well-executed Trek episode imho.

Miscellany:

I don't think we ever get to see Sulu's exotic plant garden ever again. Which is just as well --the moving, squaking pet alien plant was just a bit too goofy, even for Star Trek.

Redshirt body count = zero! Starfleet guys drop like flies in this episode, but none of them are redshirt guys! What are the odds?

I wish the Yeoman Rand character had been given more to do in the series. Would've been fun to see how the rank and file crewmembers get by while the officers are busy saving the day.

Is that the one that's 100% obviously someone's hand in a pink furry glove? Not surprised they gave that the heave-ho.

'Squaking' is a great word imo.

Remastered Doomsday Machine was amazing! I think that the 'space opera' episodes benefit the most from this process.
