I think you guys have a point. The Spock elements were pretty terrific. The Kirk element dragged it down.

Turnabout Intruder SEASON 3 EPISODE 24

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnabout_Intruder

A pretty bad episode, with Shatner being particularly bad whilst trying to act like a woman in a man's body. It's also definitely the most reactionary episode of the entire TOS run, beating The Space Hippy one by a margin, this time focussing on a distinct 'woman-as-psychotic-harpy' vibe and how they can't handle the things men can handle. When not focussing on that, the dialogue is flat and distinctly terrible too.

Just about avoid going in the terrible pile, cos Nimoy had some good moments.

BLEH.

And so it ends. An ungraceful finish for what would become such an influential sci-fi series, although it is fun to watch Shatner trying to walk like a woman.

I don't think any of the network execs at the time appreciated what they had: one of the first-ever cult franchises that was followed by small number of die-hard fans. ST:TOS never had spectacular ratings, and in season three it suffered badly from a combination of budget difficulties, a bad time slot, and a lack of interest from Roddenberry. Despite a vigorous letter-writing campaign from trekkies, it was shut down after three seasons.

On the bright side, the show did well in syndication, and ST stayed on the air in some form for decades, keeping the fan base alive, and introducing a generation of new viewers to the franchise.

BBC America is running TNG S1 right now. Some of these are so bad I'm surprised there was a season 2.

I think that our expectations were different, I went from huge TNG fan to finding many of the repeats unwatchable in just a few years it seems.

Certainly the original series has aged much better imo.

I saw it when it first aired and spot watched it during the first season. I grew into a big TNG fan during the late 1st season.

I agree many of the episodes have not aged well and the 1st season is pure dreck when compared to the last 4.

Oh snap, I completely slept on TAS. I haven't seen any of the animated ones since they were on Nickelodeon when I was very young; I have only dim memories of what they were about.

A lot of ST:TNG S1 is just terrible for reasons we'll get into when we get there --even worse than TOS S3 imo. But it got much better, and kudos to the network for sticking with it. I have to say, I watched it fondly when I was a kid, and enjoyed the episodes that didn't feature Wesley.

After TAF, I'm only doing the best of/notables of TNG. I can't drag myself through all of it again.

DS9 after those two, and I will watch all of that.

I need to slow the pace though. I'll get punchy otherwise.

I'm in the process of watching them all back (have to admit I started at S2...). About a 3rd of the way through season 7, which i think is my favourite. TNG Definitely went out on a high.

Well maybe we should cherry pick S1 - s3, then watch all from s4? I think I could do that

Here's a list of season 1+2 that should be on the rewatch. My philosophy is that we should watch the good and the very very bad. Except for Shades of Grey, no one should have to watch that ever again.

Encounter at Farpoint
The Naked Now (In this episode we learn more about the degree to which Data is functional)

Code of Honor (jaw droppingly bad)
Where No One Has Gone Before (Pedophile alien takes Enterprise to a different galaxy, meh)
The Battle (Quark!)
Hide and Q
Haven (Luxwana Troi!)
Datalore (Brothers gotta hug)
Angel One (Only need to watch to determine if Code of Honor is worse than Angel One)
Coming of Age (Borderline, I kind of like it)
Arsenal of Freedom (pretty good for season one imo)
Symbiosis
Conspiracy (bwahahahahaha)
Neutral Zone

Season 2
The Child (I mean we could skip it, it's hilarious though)
Elementary Dear Data (A bearable holodeck episode, tie in to future eps)
The Outrageous Okona (RAGE)
A Matter of Honor (the first legit good episode as far as I remember)
Measure of a Man (classic top ten episode)
Dauphin (OPTIONAL, if you hate Wes this is not for you)
Contagion
The Royale (OPTIONAL, top ten bad episode, not 100% sure it's bad enough to watch again tho)
Time Squared
Icarus Factor (Riker's dad, introduction of the dumbest continuing plotline in the history of television, Riker turning down command after command)
Q who (can't skip a Q episode...except maybe that Q holodeck episode)
Up the Long Ladder (ahahahahha racist Star Trek is the best, entertaining and offensive at the same time)
Manhunt (OPTIONAL, if you hate Luxana this isn't for you)
Emissary (OPTIONAL if you hate Worf's family this isn't for you)
Peak Performance (legit good episode)

Eh I guess that's most of them. Probably skipped about fifteen. I think these are worth watching though.

Also no need to cherry pick from season 3, it's arguably the best season. More stinkers in six or seven than three imo

Wha? I really like this episode - ok not a top 10 contender, but one of the better S2 episodes imo.

You can definitely skip every Lwaxana episode though. Having watched most of them recently i can't think of one redeeming feature from one episode.

In fact, I would guess there is a pretty decent correlation between whoever the focus character is, and how good the episode is:

Picard/Data - nearly always very good.
Dr Crusher/Worf - mostly good. I like Gates as she is a good actor, but is often let down by the material.
La Forge/Troi - more bad than good.
Wesley Crusher - Lwaxana bad*

Then there is Riker. Not a good actor and his episodes are very hit and miss - some great, some poor. I always felt that he perhaps "got" Star Trek more than the others though, and so he does bring that to the show.

Then there are recurring characters like Ro Laryn and Guinan who always deliver.

I think overall when you watch them all back you are less forgiving of the poor episodes than when they just ran weekly, but perhaps that's not a phenomenon that's limited to ST:TNG
