I think there is a lot of similarities between City on the edge of forever and the newest Tom Cruise movie, "Edge of Tomorrow"

I, Mudd SEASON 2 EPISODE 8

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Mudd

Haha, this one is goofy, using two previously used tropes of a powerful being using the crew as its playthings, and outwitting putters using logical paradoxes/illogic.

However, it does have Harry Mudd, Chekov trolling for Mother Russia with his silly dance, and the 2nd tier members of the cast acting like there in an amateur acting class, and doing it with relish. So I can't hate it. I just wish the robot guys junk wasn't so obvious in this tight trousers. I thought the twins were cute though, and the dopey revenge ending did make me smile.

Agreed. The Inner Light gets my vote as the greatest Next Gen episode. Absolutely pitch perfect drama and IMO embodies everything that was great about the show. Patrick Stewart is a master.

I, Mudd isn't quite a classic episdoe imo, but it's such a goofy/memorable ride that it comes close. Mudd is good fun to watch, and the sets/costumes are classic late 60s cheese. Not to mention the classic "troll the computer to death with paradoxes and illogic" ending, which has been elsewhere in sci-fi.

Misc:

After this episode, George Takei took a nine-episode break to film the John Wayne 'Nam movie The Green Berets.

The studio briefly considered a Harvey Mudd spinoff, but Roddenberry didn't have time for it. Why no one has since made a "Harvey Mudd: Space Pimp" series is beyond me.

Metamorphosis SEASON 2 EPISODE 9

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamor...iginal_Series)

Well, I looked up 'Soppy' in the dictionary, and I expected to see this episode described. It said that synonyms for 'soppy' include "sentimental, over-sentimental, overemotional, mawkish, cloying, sickly, saccharine, sugary, sugar-coated, syrupy."

I was right!

Okay, this has Zefram Cochrane in (inventor of warp drive on Earth, please see Star Trek: First Contact).

I guess it depends on your perspective and frame of mind. I found it one of the least Star Trek episodes of Trek. It could have been a rewrite of a Twilight Zone episode, there seemed to be so little Kirkiness about Kirk, Spockiness about Spock and McCoyness about McCoy to me.

Gosh, I rather enjoyed this one. This is a Gene **** episode that starts off as a space monster episode, but takes an unexpected twist. It's all the best aspects of Roddenberry's utopian vision of meeting strange new life forms and finding ways to coexist.

Although, weirdly, everyone seems to completely forget about that whole critical diplomacy mission at the end, it's like "Welp, guess they'll have to solve their own problems." This is probably for the best; that diplomat was surprisingly disagreeable.

I thought they "merged", with the implication being that Donahue had similar feelings to the alien. Maybe I misinterpreted the ending.

That is what happened yes but we only accept this explanation because the alien is an alien. IF you re-write the story with the alien as a human it doesn't work.

So I'm the ruler of my own planet and some chick crashes on my planet who I think is totally hot. Because I, "love her" I don't allow her to leave and I use my superior technology to make her immortal. Then another group of humans crash on my planet and I restrict their ability to leave because I don't want them to tell others which could lead towards the person I "love" being taken away from me. Furthermore one of them is dying and will die without medical treatment but I STILL don't care, in addition to that the girl I like and am keeping prisoner starts to have feelings for the dying guy. I solve the problem in the end by taking over his body and merging spirits with him, and even though we're supposedly 1 unit 50% each of us we are going to spend our entire natural life loving the same person I did, and live out my life on my planet.

Does anyone else see how sick/disturbing this is? I'd imagine if you were a lover, relative, or close friend of Elinor Donahue's character in this episode, you might have an interest in the Federation returning with war ships, capturing the companion, and having the scientists study the combined entity to resplit them, but Kirk and crew agree to "never tell anyone" about what had happened here. WHAT?!? If that had been Uhura they wouldn't have done that.

Blatantly wrong/immoral decisions portrayed as good/right ones happen in countless star trek episodes. This was a problem in all 5 series.

Journey to Babel SEASON 2 EPISODE 10

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_Babel

Pretty decent episode, with Mark Lenard as Sarek for the first time (and not the last, thankfully - he's terrific in an episode of NexGen where the plotline raised here gets resolved!). Great actor, who has already been in ST:TOS in "Balance of Terror" as a Romulan commander, and decent episode, giving us a little political intrigue, a murder mystery, Spock's family and associated tensions, and even a nice ending where McCoy finally gets the last word.

One thing about this episode as I watched was that it reminded me how much of a non-presence Nurse Chapel has been in this season so far. Shame.

Friday's Child SEASON 2 EPISODE 11

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday%...iginal_Series)

Kind of boring given the action we have here (throwing weapons, bows and arrows, rocks etc), and we do get one redshirt killed, and some outlandish alien clothing.

Also on the plus side, Julie Newmar (one of the three 60s catwomen), some minor Russia trolling from Chekov, and Scotty in charge of the bridge (he's a cool dude when captaining).

However, Julie Newmar is mostly covered up and pregnant, we get the least Klingony Klingon ever, and it plods.

Oooochie coochie coo.

I think it's easy for modern audiences to overlook how subversive an episode Journey to Babel is. Back in 1969 you simply couldn't do a TV episode about a multiracial family, but you could run a story involving a half-vulcan, half-human and his difficulty finding an identity with either culture. That's a great Roddenberry use of sci-fi storytelling, and it doesn't seem ham-fisted like some of his political commentary. We also get a murder mystery/political intrigue story to keep things moving. Add in Mark Lenard as Sarek, and this is a very entertaining Trek episode.

Misc:

Haven't been keeping track, but I believe this is the second time we see the famous Vulcan salute. Sarek and Amanda have a weird two-finger touch thing they do, the idea being that Vulcans have a hand-oriented sort of culture.

Friday's Child is regarded by many as a classic, but I'm not so sure if I agree. Usually, the costume department does a top notch job on ST, but I'm having a hard time buying the idea that this manly warrior culture dresses up in pastels and fuzzy wraps:

On the plus side, this episode is a bonanza for Star Trek cliches:

[x] Redshirt dies before the title sequence
[x] Chekov's Russian trolling
[x] "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not an X"
[x] Shatner fight scene
[x] Prime Directive totally disregarded

I give it an average rating.

The Deadly Years SEASON 2 EPISODE 12

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deadly_Years

While this one is memorable for the ageing of various cast members, apart from the rather good opening setup, the re-emergence of the Corbomite device, and Chekov getting annoyed about the constant medical tests, I find it kind of plodding. I liked watching the ageing makeup, and seeing them loosening Shatner's corset as part of that.

The whole enquiry thing is dull, and a shot of adrenaline suddenly making young. again seems silly. I think a similarly themed episode played out in NextGen.
