I tend to agree. Also one great moment is the final scene back on our Universe's Enterprise. A female yeoman brings Kirk a report (or something) and he recognizes her as the "Captain's Woman"so he decides to chat her up on the bridge.

The Apple SEASON 2 EPISODE 5

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_App...iginal_Series)

This one is pretty goofy, mostly memorable because of the silly ridiculous wigs the people of Vaal have to wear. They look like Thing 1 and Thing 2 from the Cat in the Hat. Reasonably enjoyable but rather forgettable, exploring again the idea of a society run by a machine is a sterile society. Closes with a nice dig at Spock looking satanic, and Chekov is trolling hard here, talking about the original Garden of Eden being based in Mother Russia, "just outside Moscow", and actually outkirking Kirk by getting it on with the beautiful landing-crew woman. Oh, and 3 redshirts died.

I also noticed a new crewman on the main deck who was actually English. Pretty sure he never turns up again.

Well, I've fallen behind in my viewing...

The Apple, in my opinion, is hands-down the most unintentionally hilarious episode we've seen so far. Red shirt guys die off in abrupt and darkly comical ways: poisoned by darts from a plant that goes "BOIOIOIOIOING", blown to bits by exploding rocks, and straight-up zapped from out of nowhere by a bolt lightning. Then, you've got space aliens that look like Oompa-Loompas. Throw in loads of classic Trek cliches, including at least two "Scotty I need more power!" speeches from Shatner, Spock giving a sex talk, and it's a good, silly time.

Putting all that silliness aside, it's a decent sci-fi premise that's a bit ham-handed. How many times are we told "This planet is just like Eden!"?

Misc: Koenig's hair has grown long enough that he no longer has need of his goofy wig.

I also liked the lines that went something like:

Priest of Vaal: You mean the touching and holding? Vaal doesn't all such things.
McCoy: Well, so much for this being paradise.

[x] Bones makes a "green blood" crack

There's also another racist joke about Spock's ears at the end. Spock could have sued the daylights out of Kirk and Bones for employment discrimination by this point.

The Doomsday Machine SEASON 2 EPISODE 6

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doo...iginal_Series)

This starts off with way, way too much technobabble as dialogue, reminding me of some of the poorer NexGen episodes, but after that initial 15 minutes, settles down into something better - handling a massive death-machine AND the issue of a senior officer on a vengeance spree (shades of Ahab). This is the other episode that's kind of a progenitor of the story of Star Trek: The Motion Pictures (along with a stronger contender as daddy to that movie, 'The Changeling'), and interestingly the senior officer in question is Matt Decker, and Decker is the name of the officer who's significant in ST:TMP...).

Reasonable enough (accepting the flaws in the first act), and looks spectacular in the remastered version.

Oh, and no Uhura. Some white girl instead! I missed Uhura a lot. I've grown more attached to her since watching Mirror, Mirror. On this account, I've promoted Mirror Mirror to 'classic' status.

My favorite part of Doomsday Machine is the oddly likeable Commodore Decker, who has a kind of Ahab meets the town drunk vibe to him. The episode makes a halfhearted attempt to be a Cold War parable, but it's really just a fun straightforward Enterprise vs. Monster affair, with Scotty doing his miracle thing and Kirk saving the day.

Misc:

James Doohan once said that this was his favorite Trek episode. It's easy to see why, there's a lot of good Scotty moments in it. DC Fontana has said it's her least favorite, which is an odd choice imo.

For whatever reason, Kirk sometimes wears a wraparound V-neck tunic in some Season 2 episodes. I'm guessing Shatner just wanted to show off his chest a bit.

That English guy shows up again as a transporter room technician.

The Doomsday Machine features one of my favorite Spock/Bones moments.

Spock: It appears that random chance has operated in our favor.
Bones: You mean we got lucky.
Spock: I believe I said that.

Nimoy gets so much more across with so much less overt acting. Watching his responses and what can only be described as "feelings" has been a real joy these last few weeks as I go thru the series. Of special note was space seed and the way the drama really played out extremely intensely without being overly flamboyant and cliche. subtle gazes, a slight movement of the eyebrows a deep breath is all Nimoy needs get the message across. and of course when you add in the extremely brain witticism you have a recipe for timeless success.

There's a reason this is most consistently voted the best Star Trek episode of the original series. Because it's brilliant. The script, pacing, drama, story, all wonderfully tight and fitting together beautifully. This really is the greatest episode of this season, and possibly all of them. Harlan Ellison, a great writer most of the time, delivered something beautiful here.

My only gripe is I think Joan Collins wasn't great, but then again, she was good enough to keep this beautiful episode on the rails.

I think this might be a top 10 TV episode of all time.

The Prop guy should have gotten an Emmy for this episode. The radios in the shop and Mr. Spocks tube memory parts were all period correct. There are a few tubes in the background that might be 1-2 years post time period, but a good job of not having items that would have been correct for the story line.

Catspaw SEASON 2 EPISODE 7

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catspaw...iginal_Series)

Reasonable episode with a pretty good start, but ultimately runs out of steam about 2/5ths of the way in, and coasts to the end. We do, however, get a nice start with spooky goings-on, Chekov in a comedy wig, the alien lady is an even more comedy wig, a hint of Lovecraft (the two aliens talk about the 'elder ones' or similar), and some Halloween references. Reasonably enjoyable, but lost all dramatic tension after the first act.

Oh, and the English guy was in it again, as well as some guy who Kirk left in charge that I've never seen before.

Not much to say here. The whole eccentric, superpowerful being that dicks around with the Enterprise for the lulz has just been done too many times at this point in the series. Last time it was in a Greco-Roman setting with Who Mourns for Adonis?, now it's a Halloween theme.

This one was scheduled to air around Halloween, so I guess it's sort of a Star Trek Holiday Special.

Oh, I think I figured out who the Brittish guy is:

Quote:
Actor John Winston (born 24 October 1927; age 86) portrayed Mr. Kyle through all three seasons of the original Star Trek. He would reprise the role in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He also portrayed Kyle's mirror universe counterpart, in addition to his regular role, in "Mirror, Mirror", and voiced the mirror-Enterprise's computer in the same episode. The Star Trek Encyclopedia mistakenly listed Winston as portraying an Argelian bartender in "Wolf in the Fold".
