Finished watching Picard S2 myself yesterday, and ho boy.

With Disco one of my niggling problems was how they threw bits of previous Trek in unnecessarily. With Picard, it just feel's like a self referential ego trip. Honestly, I could go on an absolute rant about one thing and another.

If you'd asked me prior to Disco S4 and Picard S2 to rate all the treks in order, Disco would have come stone cold last, no competition. Now, it's a genuine toss up between the 2.

Punk on a bus was nice, though.

The dancing doctor aka Data's day... a great episode

That is one of the most prescient episodes of Star Trek that was ever written, and would argue one of the most forward thinking pieces of science fiction ever produced, on a par with 1984 in terms of "be careful of what the future will bring".

In the pre-app era, they put a game that was easy and mindless to play that released constant endorphins to addict the user into doing nothing but playing the game. It was Facebook and Candy Crush and Twitter imagined in 1991.

I still marvel at it.

The first episode of Strange New Worlds was pretty good.

ST TNG S7E15: Lower Decks

A refreshing change of perspective, where we see how the senior officers have to make the big calls, but they can often seem remote and odd decision-makers to the junior staff, and sometimes just downright rude to their underlings. I liked this one a lot.

Lower Decks is for me a top 5 TNG episode, perhaps my favourite. Stewart really elevated the whole show with his depiction of Picard, and this scene is a great illustration of how lucky the show was to have him.

Yes, I thought all of the interactions between the juniors and seniors were interesting, but that was a standout.

ST: Strange New Worlds was surprisingly good... I hopeful for the future of the series.

the first time Pike saw himself in the reflection on 'the chairs' instrument panel was hair raising.

I did think it got a little jokey at times... but it was still enjoyable. I would have liked to see them instate 'native' language as oppose to everyone speaking English, but what are you gonna do.

LOWER DECKS is a magnificent episode... it's TOP TIER for any series let alone Star Trek. when ever I want to 'feel' again, it's one of my go to episodes... probably only second for me behind 'Death Wish' and that's because death was chosen in DW as opposed to tragically realized in LD.

They natives are not speaking English. That's the conceit of the universal translator.

of course... but THEY WERE SPEAKING ENGLISH prior to experiencing first contact.

with 'Enterprise' the Klingon's were actually SPEAKING KLINGON in that first half of the First episode.

speaking the native language adds weight, gravitas and legitimacy to a program.

this is something that actually always bothers me even with earth bound language in films and shows... USE THE REAL LANGUAGE. I am rather tired of having to suspend disbelief because a writer can't seem to accomplish it... do your job writers!

Well, that's because there actually is a legitimate Klingon language that's been developed over years and decades.

C'mon. You can't seriously expect writers to develop a different language each time the Enterprise visits another planet for a 45-minute episode. They've already developed the conceit of the universal translator to explain why they can communicate with each other. I don't know why you listening to gibberish for a few minutes in the first act instead of English would add "gravitas" for you. And if there was any question in your mind that the English was just there for our benefit and that they really weren't supposed to be speaking it, just go to 46:20 of the episode and you can see their written "alien" language on charts and schematics.

great episode, worth watching as a standalone, meager ending but beginning and mid sections really had me pulled in

ST TNG S7E16: Thine Own Self

Has a few similarities to Star Trek Insurrection, in that Data goes haywire and accidentally reveals himself to a more primitive society prior to First Contact. And kind of turns into a lynching.... meanwhile in a much less interesting plot strand, Troi takes the Bridge Officer's exam and Ryker is a nightmare of an examiner lol. I liked the Data strand a lot.

I was able to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture-Directors Cut in the theater last night.
the print has been COMPLETELY remaster and refurbished and it looked spectacular for a movie made in 1979. they also added a three for four additional special effects scenes that ADD TO the film.

I mean... cell phone photos in a dark theater. it looked great.



if you're inclined... the new print will be playing one more day on Wednesday across the US.

It would've been nice if he used the Jim Kirk toupee from TOS for the movies as well.

I don't really have an opinion on wigs... it doesn't really affect me to the point where I feel the need to make a feeble attempt to wax poetic.

ST TNG S7E17: Masks

Quite the tour-de-force from Spiner, and he himself wished it hadn't come next to Thine Own Self, but otherwise kind of stupid and messy. Spiner is the only good thing about it.

The Data strand here was great. They even took the time to weave in some really good stuff about the importance of the scientific method and how distrustful people are when it contradicts their beliefs. Some things never change I guess...

I didn't even mind the Troi B story, but this character development should have come 3-4 seasons ago and it might have led to better storylines for her.

Yeah, Spiner is great in this one.
