Re: Spring has Sprung in The Lounge (Official Lounge Spring Low Content Thread)

John, that was a very sweet post. thank you

Like you I want to take as little with me when I move into the new house. I don't know how to throw out pictures. I have boxes of stuff from my mom's house, and my own crap accumulated over years. It takes days and weeks to look through it. Sorting through papers and clothes that bring back memories - old letters, receipts for things that are memorable, pictures of my life and my family, old clothes I used to wear. It's just all too much. It's all too freaking much. I'm amused for a moment when I see them and then I get depressed. I'm reminded that time marches on (as my uncle used to say). Lol.

Re: Spring has Sprung in The Lounge (Official Lounge Spring Low Content Thread)

Ray Zee- that's a lot of square footage to be filling up. What's in all those barns?

Mrseagull is not able to let things go which has added to my stress. Over the years he has brought home junk from flea markets, old cars, motorcycles, ATVs, tools and car parts. He buys old crappy guitars and musical instruments because he thinks they are cool. What are we supposed to do with all this crap that has no purpose whatsoever? When I suggest that we toss the ****ers out, he is offended. The other day he saw a box filled with fabric that was in my throw-away pile and honest to god he wanted to keep the fabric because it was pretty. He thought perhaps I might want to upholster some chairs in my spare time .

Katy,

As long as he didn't actually tell you to upholster a couch, he's a keeper. He just buys too much junk. Take him; throw the stuff away.

Wait, what!?!?!?????!!!!**

Musical instruments are ****ing awesome! I'll bet he's got a piece of valuable equipment and doesn't even know it, lol.

One of my favorite stories is Tom Morello, the guitarist from Rage Against the Machine. The guitar you always see with him is some no-name guitar that he bought from a pawn shop near Niagara Falls for no reason beyond it looked cool. He said he paid about $150 for it, has no clue what it is, but calls it his single best investment.

I mean, I guess if he doesn't actually play music, collecting instruments is a bit unusual, especially if he has no idea what value they have. In that case, I think he should refurb and sell them to local musicians. We are all broke and like to find a great deal.

** (Sorry, John Cole, if I offended your sensibilities)

Re: Spring has Sprung in The Lounge (Official Lounge Spring Low Content Thread)

So, I want to share an only-in-Austin story today.

About a month ago, I met up with a potential singer to work with. Before meeting, we were feeling pretty about working together, etc. A question I asked was "what do you want to do, exactly?" and... well, we met, jammed for about 20 minutes, and decided it wasn't going to work out because she was all of a sudden able to answer that question.

Cool, fine, etc. We got along great regardless and made arrangements to just kick it at open mics and gigs. Yep.

So, on a Sunday, I say I'm going to one open mic the next day, let me know what you think... and I don't get a response until Thursday. "Hey, did you go?" Uh, yeah.... it went fine. No further response, forget about her.

Then the next Monday, "Hey, sorry I haven't said what's up, but super busy."

Yeah... how are you? "great, etc."

And then a few days later.... You get the pattern. It's like, thanks for replying no less than 5 days after any fact at all, but then you keep on contacting me out of the blue? I sort of forgot about this person and didn't bother making any more contact, why is this happening?

I was talking to a friend about this, saying I'll never understand people. Musicians are kind of a strange breed, but you know, still...

He said to me that he was talking to his mother about this very same thing. She's in her 60s or 70s, I guess, and she said "Yeah, you never understand people. Just don't bother." lol.

"You have a limit of 2 explanation points this semester: use them wisely."

I think that was a quote I read here and I attribute it to you for some reason.

I was kidding about that comment, of course.

Glad you remembered, Dave, about the exclamation point rule. I think I want it on my tombstone. I have a friend who texts me and ends both questions and statements with !?

I don't get it.

Still, I have thousands of books that I can't seem to get rid of yet. But these shall go too. I want to take as little as possible with me when I do move.

But I hold on to the memories without anything, or much of anything, to help with the recall. My wife told me to take more pictures because some day I would want them. I never took enough. And now I'm happy to have one or two.

My memories remain strong: I can still hear her voice, see the look on her face when she told me to get on with my life when she was gone, remember how she felt next to me, her warmth, her courage, her gentle ways with her children and complete strangers, her graciousness and generosity. I don't need pictures for any of this.

Some day when these memories have faded, the pictures will only be pictures of a stranger I no longer remember. What good will they be then?

Today, twelve years exactly after her death, I think of what she has missed, especially our daughter's wedding and the births of my two grandchildren, but I think, too, she never got to see what truly fine people her children have become, how they have let me continue to be part of their lives. I was blessed with Mary's love and continue to be blessed with the love of my two children and grandchildren. It has been so much more than I ever could have imagined some thirty years ago when I suddenly became a step--father.

Most of all, for now anyway, I don't need things to keep memories alive. You don't either, my friend.

Re: Spring has Sprung in The Lounge (Official Lounge Spring Low Content Thread)

Nope, not summer yet. It's only 90 degrees with blazing sun.

It is summer when the humidity reaches 90% and the temp goes past 100.

Northeast weather, Nut. Graduation last evening. 90 when it started. Spent the evening reading off names of 450 graduates while wishing I was dressed in underwear beneath the academic regalia.
