how important is it to get a 4wd rental to drive from the Reno airport to South Lake & South Lake to Squaw/Alpine? (we are staying at Harrahs but will be doing a day trip or 2 up to Squaw)

there are 5 of us going and we could either rent a sweet minivan for $70/day or twice as much for an Expedition. is it needed/worth it?

I guess it's an unknown if we could fit 4 pairs of skis/1 board + 5 guys in either. does anyone know if Reno car rental places have ski racks?

check the weather before you go, if its not snowing here its usually sunny and the roads get clear fast.

If you having driven a bit on snow and dont mind getting chains then you will probably be ok unless it is puking snow when you are here. I drove a front wheel drive car without chains for 3+years in tahoe and never got it stuck besides in my own neighborhood. I did have access to four wheel drive cars though if it was really bad out.

yeah, chains are mandatory there right?
rental cars will have them?

im sure the 5 of us would be able to figure out how they work!

if its snowing heavily there will be chain checkpoints for non 4x4s. not sure how rentals deal with chains, id guess they would rather you have them, but they tend to bang up cars. Probably just call the local rental place, they may have a subaru w/ ski rack for rent also which might be an option if you guys dont mind the slighly tight squeeze.

I found some cool looking ones by Bern:

What's the difference between a "hard hat" and a "helmet"? They seem to make some sort of distinction but I'm not familiar with what defines each one.

I just bought a new setup. Going to Snowshoe (WV) tomorrow to try it out. Only mountain with any snow decently close to me in North Carolina...this heat sucks...what you guys think?

Yeah.. they didn't hurt near as much today. I had an awesome day at Breckenridge.

One of my friends just told me that Horizon Airlines is doing flights from LAX to Mammoth as of today...if any of you guys wind up trying this let please post up your thoughts. This would definitely make it way easier to get up there for weekend trips.

Headed to Tahoe in January, staying in incline village and snowboarding Northstar for 2 days. I'll report back with a TR. I did the same trip last year and had a great time.

For anyone else going to Tahoe, if you don't want to drive to So. Lake, I recommend Rookies in incline village (dive bar with a random slew of girls, servers usually foreigners working for the season), and The Biltmore casino, dive casino with double deck blackjack and good jack n cokes.

Wait...this is a poker forum. Check out Harrah's in So. Lake, their poker room is pretty decent and last year it was booming. I'll include my Harrah's trip in my TR.

I snowboard once, maybe twice/year but I'm always pretty sore afterwards. I'm going on a weekend ski-trip in 3 weeks. Are there any specific stretches or excercises I can do in the weeks beforehand to reduce the soreness?

Also, aspen is getting pounded and I am going there in 10 days. 26 inches in last 48 hours, ohhhh baby.

On a side note, I usually do well with weather out there but I'm going to be in the virgin islands for the week before aspen, and pretty much flying straight there from vi. I really hope this weather change doesn't pose a problem...anyone think it might?

I start doing squats 2-3x per week for 2-3 weeks before the trip. I haven't had any issues with soreness yet. Don't do any sort of massive weight or anything, just keep it easy at first then move up to 3/4 of your body weight and hit 8 reps for 3 sets.

Be careful out there. Lots of inbounds slides all over the place it seems like. If you have a beacon wear it.

Been at Breckenridge for the past 2 days. Perfect weather but wish there was some snow at night. Going to Vail the next two days then one more day at Breckenridge. Here is a video of me at the top of Peak 8 today. It was quite windy at the top as you can tell...

Anyone have some recommendations for good gloves (type/brand/anything)? I'm sick of cold fingertips.

I've weaned myself down to thin gloves. I wear essentially shells with a thin layer of insulation. so I guess I'm lucky

have you tried mittens? I got my ex a pair of The North Face Himalayan Mitt, they are pretty ridic warm. even she would sweat in them
