Speaking of Kubrick...

SK uses to great effect, this tracking shot. A long focal length in combination with a short depth of field creates this scene where there are very distinct multiple plains of action occurring independent of the main focus point(Kirk Douglas).

it's a beautiful thing to behold if you take the time to be drawn into the action.

he also uses this tracking shot technique to great effect in Full Metal Jacket, however he uses it in a perpendicular plain to PoG by tracking inline with the action.

Speaking of Kubrick...

The best shot in any film, ever. It's amazing how he subverts the audience's expectation from every horror film that Jack will sneak up and physically grab her from the back. The tracking shot from behind as she sees the horrifying typewritten evidence that Jack has finally snapped, page after page of it.

And then Jack blithely announces his presence and asks if she likes it.

2) The famous heist scene from Rififi.

3) The basketball court scene from Fresh.

4) The famous tracking shot in GoodFellas.

"I never ****ed anybody over in my life who didn't have it comin' to'em. You got that? All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don't break'em for know one. You understand?"

Scarface, cliché I know. I saw this movie almost 30 years ago upon release. As a kid, this line struck me as fearless and independent. Bold take on morality, regardless of laws and public perceptions, at the end of the day you have to stand on your own two feet and live life on your terms.

Whether you are going against convention or even laws, life is about loyalty and treating those you encounter with mutual respect. Obviously a certain amount of recklessness associated with this mentality, but their is also an inescapable romanticism, like Sinatra's "My Way." Bold men dedicated to their beliefs and principles, obstinate and admirable at the same time.

"Nearly unwatchable" is a confusing way to describe a movie to me. Unwatchable seems like a discrete characterization, something unwatchable does not get watched whereas something watchable can be watched, not a ton of gray area for me at least. If I use unwatchable to describe a movie, it means I don't waste time forcing myself to watch it, better things to do.

I don't concur with anything you've posted... not even a smidgen

Scarface is a completely scattered fantasyland tale concocted from fractured and reconstructed anecdotes.

AP was great, but the rest... not so much

Definitely not a fairly tell. I lived in Miami for many years. The story of immigrants making it big there with drugs goes way beyond legends like Griselda Blanco and other well documented examples.

For years Haitian immigrants controlled a lot of the activity at the ports, brokering and facilitating the entry of many tons of cocaine and amassing immense wealth in the process.

I also have played lots of poker in Little Havana area, Hialeah/Magic City, and private games throughout the area, and knew a handful of Cuban guys whose lives paralleled to a lesser degree that of Tony Montana's in the movie.

On the north side of Miami Beach, there were several Russian immigrants at Gulfstream who were allegedly associated with immense success in the drug trade. Guys who came up large from nothing and had money to burn and no apparent job or work history. Perhaps the immense success of Montana in the movie was exaggerated or an extreme example of success in drug trafficking, but I found the portrayal to be accurate based on my personal experiences.

Don't you get it, it is Brian De Palma's exact intent : the capitalist journey, a scattered dream, fragmented and rebuilt...

Like any gangsta movie, it represents bits and pieces of America, how the country was built, how the pieces were put together. Lots of ole good westerns and gangstas movies can be shocking, because lots of Americans want to forget where they come from : they are fragments of imagination, a piece of every immigrant, of every American dollar bill that drew blood.

I like it. Watched it recently for the first time since it came out, and was amazed how memorable it was, I hasn't forgot any of it. All down to that amazing, ridiculous, magnificent performance from Pacino.

Scarface is a laughable pile of crap. Pacino was awful in it. Just a gigantic dose of cheese. Probably the most overrated film OAT - even ahead of Shawshank.

Every time Pacino is on screen I find it hard to not laugh.

The only thing good about Scarface is the Geto Boys song of the same name.

Ironic you mention Houston's finest gangsta rap pioneers and down the movie in the same breathe. The reason Scarface is cited and respected by ghetto culture is the fact that it resonates so well with their lives, they see the authenticity and reality of Scarface and how well it mirrors their own lives. It is like Biggie's music, listening to it, you can tell instantly that he experienced serious drug dealing culture and violence. Sometimes you have to have lived through it to recognize the real deal.

Brilliant scene, love it! I can't watch it without thinking of my father, a Vietnam Vet, alcoholic factory worker with a wad of cash big enough to choke an army, who loved to get drunk and dine in style. I like how Pacino is fully aware that class separation has little to do with integrity and character and points out the hypocrisy and judgmental nature of the upper class.

Makes me wonder if Chapo's restaurant appearances are the same way today. Heard online he shuts the place down, takes all the patrons' cell phones, and pays everyone's bill then leaves.

Check out Red Rock West if you have a chance. Seems like it was a pretty small movie despite the cast. Really enjoyed Hopper's role in that.

My favourites are the starting scene of UP when the old guy's wife passes away. Never felt so much emotion for a character in such a short span of time before.

Another scene was when the food critic's review is read out in the movie Ratatouille. That was awesome.

Not sure I'd call it a "scene", but the love story in Up was indeed masterful storytelling.

here is Gustavo ( played by Giancarlo Esposito) from breaking bad in NBC's "Revoultion". In the scene you see a relaxed guy whom normally is a menacing character and always serious ...just as Gus was on breaking bad

this scene really stands out to me and sort of puts me in a different place. like The Bahamas or Hawaii. The beginning of the scene is very peaceful and relaxing

the first one that stands out to me is the scene near the end of True Grit where John Wayne meets the outlaws on his horse across an open field, outnumbered 4 to 1. After giving them one chance to surrender he takes his reigns in his teeth and charges across the field with a pistol in one hand and long rifle in the other. This was one of the first films my father ever showed me and I doubt I will ever fall out of love with it.

Gladiator--The Spaniard's first gladiator contast, beginning with them all being crowded in the dark corridor and not knowing what's going to happen next.

The Hitcher (Hauer and Howell version)-- "I want you to say four little words: I. Want. To. Die."

A Few Good Men--Christopher Guest testifying and Kiefer Sutherland testifying (Nicholson's testimony has been overplayed)

Quiz Show--Charles Van Doren admitting to his father his history of cheating on TV, while they are standing in his father's college classroom.

I could mention a number of great performances that compare with Brando's Godfather. But one would be hard pressed to point out a greater performance than that of Al Pacino as Lt. Col Frank Slade in "The Scent of A Woman".
