Quayle was also a C student, which didn't make anyone too bright. It was especially rough on his reputation when he said he went to the "the Harvard of the midwest," and the college he went to wasn't even in the regional top 20. That famous "deer in the headlights" look that supposedly appeared on his face when given any remotely challenging question was yet another nail in the coffin of his public persona.
But it wasn't for lack of trying. When he announced he was going to run for the presidency, Time magazine gave him the most glowing write-up imaginable. This was back when they gave rave reviews to herpes, mind you, saying it would finally set people straight about sex.
