Things are happening amazingly fast here at the hospital. I would have thought a fair o/u would have been 24 hrs for labor for a first time mom. We don't figure to make it to 16

Pretty exciting stuff Wookie. Congratulations in advance.

Jiggymike, sorry for your lost. Fishette and I lost out first child a
long time ago. The pain still creeps in from time to time but the next 2 kids came along without a hitch. Keep your head up and enjoy the good times to come.

Well, it's a girl. Lots of hair. And really not as bad of a process as either of us expected. Baby girl seems healthy so far, but as she's still learning how to nurse, we'll verify the rest of the plumbing soon enough.

We are still working on a middle name, but what we have figured out is Amelia (middle) (MrsWookie's kept last name) Wookie. I liked the two middle name solution instead of hyphenating.

I'd have to ban myself for any pics I could post so far, so we'll see about something sfw later.

Congrats. I'm sure the nurses will explain everything but nursing can be difficult, especially sometime during day 2, when the child will "cluster feed" and nurse constantly over and over again. It can be exhausting for the mother. That's where fathers can step in - between feedings, give your wife time to sleep/nap. Some mothers go through exhaustion and actually need to send the baby to the nursery (if your hospital has one, ours doesn't anymore which I thought was bizarre, but apparently they keep the babies in the rooms for all mothers now).

There is only so much fathers can do, since we can't feed them. And unfortunately some babies are just fussier than others.

Learn how to swaddle nice and tight. Ask the nurse to show you a few times. Shape of a diamond, pull top corner down half way, right corner over, bottom corner up, left corner over and down a little. It comforts the babies a lot because apparently it reminds them of the womb, being confined.

And the first few poops will look like tar. It'll change on day 2 or 3, and become greenish/mustardish.

Also, the baby will lose weight by the time you leave the hospital (both of ours did, anyway). Do not be alarmed. Your follow ups with the pediatrician will tell you where you are on the growth curve.

Finally, keep an eye on the mother. Some women get emotionally...exhausted? It's a confusing and emotional time for them, especially with the first child, and I think it has to do with the immense amount of pressure suddenly put on them to be "perfect". Just ensure you are supportive and ask if they feel OK and obviously do whatever you can to help out while in the hospital. Also, don't let the mother fall asleep with the baby in the hospital bed.

Good luck. It gets easier in about 4 years.

Lovely little one, Wookie - congratulations to both of you. All babies have a cute nose. One of those odd facts of the universe.

Thanks guys. We are getting the hang of things. Amelia lost a full pound off her birth weight by her Friday appointment, so it looks like MrsWookie wasn't producing enough milk. That isn't terribly uncommon, and it's not a mark of shame, but it is reality. So we have been using supplemental formula to basically get as much in her gullet as possible. Daddy gets to feed her now also using his little finger and a syringe. Odd system, but she was up 3 oz this morning, so it's working.

Geez, this thing turned into a bottomless pit overnight. She had been taking 20-30 mLs of formula + expressed breast milk per feeding. All of a sudden she's at 50 minimum over the last 3 feedings. Great news, of course, but quite a surprise.
