That said I've never flown with my boy so I have no idea how it would go down. I just imagine it would be difficult. I know my sister just flew here from California with her 5 month old and I don't recall her complaining.
Just noticed this reply, so what's 3 months too late. My son was an awful baby for the most part. Constantly having reflux. Found out at 2.5 years he has a dairy allergy, which likely caused a lot of problems, that wasn't diagnosed. He was awful. But he became really well behaved as he got older, and now that we got his diet fixed, he's been really good. A little rough on his sister, but for the most part sweet and well behaved and chill. He is a bit restless, so I wouldn't want to fly with him now! I wouldn't call him docile, although he is very well behaved in public. We flew with him at 11 months, and he was constantly wanting to move about and didn't like just sitting in our laps. Fortunately we had an open flight and I let him walk around a bit. He'd probably do well now with a window seat and a tablet to keep him amused. The key for older toddlers is to just keep them occupied. My son was surprisingly good on a 15 hour drive with only me (and a dog), just had to keep him occupied (and let him sleep a lot, and get out to run around to burn off steam every so often).
My daughter was an absolute angel baby. She was sleeping through the night early, never threw up, was very chill. She's 15 months now and has gotten a lot more clingy and whiny. Flying with her was easy at 9 months, and I'd imagine it would be fine now. She's basically a big baby, just now walking (no desire for walking until recently, even though I know she had ability to do it). She likes to be held and talk. I definitely think shes an exception, but my son was probably more typical or even on the worse side. If you time it right, they just sleep and you are done.
Super young babies, though, sleep so much, that a flight is usually easy. It's rare to see a real young baby on a plane causing trouble. It's the slightly bigger ones that are still too young to stay occupied by anything but old enough to get restless that are going to be a huge pain in the ass. There's a sweet spot with the age where they are easy on planes and ages where they can be huge pains in the ass (YMMV by kid, obviously).
