Not overly protective at all. It will go one of two ways:

1. Kid turns, runs, stammers and makes an idiot out of himself.
2. Kid asks if I'm going hunting. I say yes. He asks more questions. I take daughter and her boyfriend hunting.

I'm looking for kid #2.

I'd be happy with a kid who actually comes in and introduces himself properly. It seems basic things like that are hard to find these days.

I have a boy now and kid 2 due in March. I have a feeling it's a girl, but won't know until October.

Wiping poop the other way is going to take some getting used to.

Necessary but not sufficient.

Just realized I never posted an update over here -- our boys were born five weeks ago today, exactly a month early: Nathaniel Joseph was 5 lb 5 oz, and Alexander Dale was 5 lb 14 oz. Both are over 8 pounds now, and already rolling over and doing all sorts of other stuff before the books say they "should".

An aside/PSA (there are more details in my workout blog in H&F), my wife had a pretty severe complication after the boys were born (peripartum cardiomyopathy). After the birth, any excess fluid retention, difficulty breathing (especially when laying down), high pulse/bp, and loss of appetite are symptoms that need to be properly evaluated. They weren't, in our case, for five days after the boys were born, and we came pretty close to losing her as a result. She's not out of the woods yet, but well on the road to recovery (home with the boys). They diuresed over 25 L of fluid out of her in about 4 days, and she's lost about 70 of the 80 pounds she gained during the pregnancy (thanks diuretics).

Sorry for the downer, and hopefully none of you ever have to deal with this, but just wanted to make everyone aware -- a lot of OBs aren't very good at diagnosing this sort of thing.

I wish you the best of luck, and when your wife makes a 100% recovery and raises 2 olympic champions, update us.

I've heard many stories of children who had a tough start and the mother having the same, but things turned out ok. I hope I hear the same from you. Hang in there, be healthy and happy and hopefully everything turns out golden.

Stroller and Car Seat came today. I have to put together the crib and car seat and stroller together this week.

Strangely.. I still don't feel this is real. I don't think it'll be "real" until I see my baby in person.

Changing that diaper isn't something I'm looking forward to though. Ugh.

1. When you see your baby, you'll forget pretty much everything else.

2. Diapers are the least of your concerns. They're really not a big deal, and you'll be so busy trying to make sure your family is safe and well and provided for that changing a diaper will seem like a break.

3. You got this.

Do you really get used to baby poop? I mean the smell makes me gag. I guess it'll get better, but people tell me you get used to it. I just don't believe them.

That's the only part I'm nervous about.

If that's the only part you're nervous about...

1. Don't be. It's simple, and doesn't even stink for the first six months.

2. Get nervous about some other stuff, because we're talking about a tiny little existence who will be depending upon YOU entirely to stay alive. That has to be worth at least a smidge of nervousness, no?

lol, I'm with wil. My wife is 2-4 weeks away (supposed to be 4, but she's had to stop pre-term labor with some meds... which will stop once 36 weeks comes) and it's hard to think this is real. Completed the crib, stroller, etc... so we are ready to roll.

POOP DIAPERS tho, ugh

I know I'm being silly. I think I'm just somewhat kinda nervous. I want a child, I just am not sure about the whole infant stage. I was never a kid person, so having babies around or young children always made me a bit nervous.

I think I'll be ok. She'll be mine, and the home will be fun with her in it. Just gotta deal with the poop.

Thanks for the support guys. Symptomatically she's much improved, so there's just the question of how much of the way back her heart can get; the prognosis is as good as it can be for this sort of thing, though.

With respect to new fathering, most of my friends (and me certainly) all felt the same way. When you don't have kids, being around other peoples' kids tends to make you overwhelmed and a little frightened of the idea of parenthood (at least it did for me), but it really is different with your own kids. Diapers lose their mystery pretty quickly, and everything else is manageable.

My wife and I had our first born yesterday morning named Tayden. Was 19.5 in long and 7.5 lbs. lots of brown hair and blue eyes like me and mom! Our first baby and he was 2 weeks early, which docs say happens only around 5% of the time. But healthy nontheless.

10 hours from water breaking till birth. Was the craziest thing to ever happen.

Fun fact: my wife's water broke in the middle of bursting out in laughter at tosh.0 it was funny, then I realized "oh crap, it's go time!"

Will get a pic up once we get home!
