Hello all. Sorry I haven't been around lately. Been sort of . . . busy.

Borowife delivered Boropup, AKA Parker, at 5:56PM on Sunday, November 14th, 2010. He weighed 8 pounds even, 20.5". He was delivered by emergency Cesarian section, but he and Borowife are both doing great.

Olivia Rose, 8 lbs. 2 oz., 20 inches:

She waited 9 days after her due date, fending off inducement for the last three of them, to wait to be born on her grandma's birthday, Nov. 11 at 3:18 AM. Obviously grandma's girl.

Epidurals are amazing. My daughter was laughing in between pushing. We also had the entire nursery to ourselves from Tuesday morning until she was born Thursday AM. Naturally we said that we'd reserved the whole place for a VIP arrival.

My girls first due date was Nov 15th. After going to the OB for the first time they gave her the due date of Nov 19th. When she went in for her 12 week ultrasound they said the baby was small for that age and moved the due date back to Nov 28th.

Why are they allowed to do this? I'm just getting a little iffy because I know stillborn rates go way up the longer a baby is in there. Someone also told me the first due date you get tends to be the most accurate. Not sure how true that is but I have heard it.

I feel like we should be able to ask for her to be induced at this point.

10/15/10 - christophelp(#1, boy)

Update - was amazed this morning when I realised that my son is now 1 month old. Time has flown by and it's quite hard to think back to life before he started taking over the house - it's surprising how someone so small can take up so much space!

Anyway, Samuel was born on 17 October 2010, weighing in at a healthy 7lb 14oz (3.56kg). He went a bit yellow after a couple of days but not nearly enough to need treatment. Then he lost a bit too much (of his birth) weight and so we didn't get him home until he was 4.5 days old.

Not only do we feel so blessed to have him at all, we feel particularly lucky that he (currently) is so well 'behaved' and has already started to sleep for 6 hrs at night (especially when we hear stories from our friends of how they've had to get up every hour). We're still very much expecting the bubble to burst and for the (relatively) sleep filled nights to come to an end at some point.

Yeah. I'm no medical doctor, but I've never heard of that much revision of the due date, and I'd definitely PM Irieguy asap.

The customary way of estimating a due date is to add 280 days to the first day of the woman's last menstrual period. So if the LMP was 2/10/09, the estimated due date would be today, 11/17/10.

Ultrasound dating is obviously a much better method, so if the first ultrasound calculates a due date more than a few days off from the date calculated by the LMP then we use the ultrasound due date. The later the ultrasound is done, the less accurate it is. But even an ultrasound done at 20 weeks of pregnancy is going to be able to accurately determine gestational age within 10 days.

So we use the first ultrasound to set the final due date if the ultrasound date is more than a few days different from the date calculated from the LMP.

In your case I imagine they gave your girl a due date of 11/19/2010 based on her telling them that the first day of her last menstrual period was 2/12/10. Then when they did an ultrasound the pregnancy measured 10 weeks instead of 12 weeks, so they changed the due date to 11/28. This is going to be accurate within a few days.

I always hear women say things like "they keep changing my due date" or "my doctor thinks i'm due on January 1st but i'm really much farther along" or some such nonsense. The reality is that calculating a due date is very straightforward and simple. We do it exactly one time during pregnancy (at the time of the first ultrasound) and virtually never change the due date after the first ultrasound is done (there are exceptions based on who exactly did the ultrasound.)

The earliest labor can be induced for non-medical reasons is one week before the due date. So she can be induced anytime on or after 11/21.

her next appt is on tuesday, the 23rd. it's definitely within a week of her due date. if she says she wants to be induced can her OB say no? and if he's cool with it can they get started on her that day?

It is reasonable to request an elective induction of labor within 1 week of the due date but that doesn't mean it is going to happen.

If her cervix isn't dilated at all, her doctor will probably recommend waiting another week.

There are also differences in philosophy between doctors regarding induction of labor. Since it is reasonable to induce at 39 weeks and it is also reasonable to simply monitor the pregnancy and wait until a week or two after the due date, it will ultimately depend on what her physician's usual practice is.

I always offer elective induction if the cervix is favorable at 39 weeks, but other physicians prefer to wait a bit longer.

gf had an appt with her OB today. turns out, he wasn't there, AGAIN. so she had another random dude. turns out she is still only 1/2cm dilated. she asked if she could be induced and the dude said he can't schedule it because he isn't her OB and there's no emergency.

are all OBs like this? i feel like she's seen hers less than half the time. feels likes she's been pregnant for 2 years now. im starting to legitimately feel like this baby may never come. pretty depressing.

First babies are more likely to come late. You aren't even at your due date yet. What's the big deal? Chances are with your seed, the baby will be tiny anyway. It's not like you are gonna have a 10 lb baby pop out or anything.

An induction is no picnic. 40 hours of labor for my wife was pretty terrible. Just wait it out, and if she's not here by 41 weeks, schedule an induction. Unless you have a C-Section scar fetish or something.

Well, the big deal is stillborn rates start to increase after 38 weeks, or so people that know way more about this stuff than me have said. I'm just not a fan of waiting too far past the due date (especially since it was moved back 2 weeks for God knows what reason) I think that part is what really scares me.

What does the size of the baby have to do with anything TC?

Bigger babies are going to generally have more trouble fitting out. You generally would want to induce a bigger baby earlier to avoid it getting even larger. At least that's what my wifes OBGYN did since they normally wouldn't induce until 42 weeks, but did it at 41 for my wife since they figured she was having a large baby. Turns out he was even bigger than expected and posterior which made inducing an excruciating process.

It was moved back 2 weeks due to more information. There's no reason to worry about this. ~50% of babies go past due date. It's not like some countdown clock and the baby goes bad at that point.

Induction is not some rosy process. Pitocin is a bitch. C-Sections are not fun. Both increase risk. It's nothing to freak out about. It's worth keeping an eye on things and all, but that's what weekly appointments do. Just hope the baby comes on Saturday so you can avoid humiliation.
