Just stumbled on a movie called Gutshot Straight on Netflix, downloaded it and watched it on a plane. ONE poker scene at the beginning and what ensues is the most senseless confusion... can't even put it into words. Steven Segal and Vinnie Jones have roles but they don't save the festering steampile of the movie.

I looked through the thread and didn't see Michael Clayton mentioned (if it has been, my bad). A good old-school poker scene in it.

There's a movie on Amazon Prime called Seven Days to Vegas that I VERY highly recommend. You'll probably want to turn it off after 15 minutes, but don't - trust me. And the less you know about it the better.

There are actually SEVERAL poker movies on Amazon Prime. Some are actual movies like The Biggest Game In Town, which I give about a 4 out of 10. There are a bunch of documentaries too, like BetRaiseFold, Drawing Dead and Casino Confidential. BRF is one I would recommend to any online poker fan. Drawing Dead was meh. Haven't watched Casino Confidential yet.

It's only marginally about poker (the very beginning and the very end), but is very much about the degenerate gambler lifestyle, and a very good movie.

+1 - I also love all the 70s stuff in it, such a throwback. Quite a bit of star power in the movie as well. Can't believe that was 45+ years ago. Blows my mind.

Can't recommend the movie highly enough.

I am guessing its like the end of "The Gambler" with James Caan. He won and the juice/action is when you lose.

"Axel and Hips discuss what motivates gamblers. Axel surprises Hips when he says he knows gamblers like himself want to lose. He adds that he could have made lots of money by betting only on sure winners, but that doing so would not have brought him any real excitement. Ignoring the warning by Hips that it's dangerous, Axel wanders off into a black ghetto near the gymnasium where the game was played."

I think the thrill and fun was in the chase, once they won big the thrill was gone.

I suspect that only the hardest core gamblers would understand the Gambler mentality of the action being the driving force vs the money
The average person would be like who wouldnt want to win all the time?

One of my fave Twighlight Zone episodes about the gambler who doesnt lose

Different occupation, same mentality..leave today with plenty of loot and no more people trying to kil/arrest you or do another job.
