Really happy with this jazz ballad version I came up with for Sam Smith's Not In That Way.

Hey guys!

Haven't made anything new in a couple years, but today I got the urge to record something! (piano only)

Nice man, nice. You have a very fluid approach to playing. Well done.

I haven't done a cover in forever. Work plus being a newly single parent will do that.

Thanks for your kind words Hope to see more from you when you get the time, too.

Did another one last week, decidedly less "fluid" as it's learned off sheet music, unlike 98% of stuff I ever play. Hadn't played it in a while so I'm glad I got it down before I forgot it completely.

Fabian,

I really enjoyed this!

Thanks a lot Rexx, I really appreciate that!

In the ten months since I last posted in this thread, I've done a handful more youtube videos, though none that fit the piano/song title. I'm probably doing another Tim Minchin song, with singing, soonish though.

In the meantime, enjoy a Disney song from Pocahontas, or why not something from the musical Chess!

I did this in a hurry, and it kinda shows in a few places since it's a very difficult (if fun, Alan Menken writes awesome music. Years ago I uploaded one from The Little Mermaid, too) one to play. I play just based on the chords, displayed on my computer monitor off-screen, and in a few places in the second half I don't quite remember how the melody goes. I wanted it uploaded quickly though to impress a girl, oh well. Overall, I still think it came out pretty decently. On a sidenote, I find it weird how the first Disney song I ever did has something like 120k views, while this one has ~85 after 4½ months. I must not be very good at search engine optimizing.

Fabian,

I enjoyed listening to both. The first one I would probably not have even picked up on any mistakes but you had pointed them out so then I noticed them lol. Regardless it was still a nice piece of music to listen to. The second piece was particularly good but I think I am biased as it brought back great memories of going to see Chess with my mum

I think you are really talented. I very much admire people who have the dedication to learn how to play a musical instrument well

Oh yes and I also like your beard! Does the girl you are seeing like it?

Thanks Rexx! Since you have good Chess memories, here's another one from it, recorded this fall

I appreciate the compliments very much. As for the beard, I tried it out in dec-jan, and almost everyone agrees I look better in it. After a while, it got too long and I shaved it off, and since then I've usually shaved when I grow tired of it, usually within a couple weeks at most. The girl likes the look, as long as it doesn't grow too long (which it definitely did in late January), but is a bit sensitive about it when it comes to kissing and similar stuff. For that reason, these days I usually shave before I see her, which is once every 7-14 days or so. Not opposed to going back to being bearded though, it'll probably happen at some point since I did enjoy getting compliments for my looks, not exactly an everyday occurrence.

ETA: Also I'm not sure I'm technically "seeing her", she's been very clear that she doesn't want anything serious, and things aren't really progressing romantically, even though it's very nice every time she's here.

That was great! Thank you so much for posting it.

In regards to the girl, I knew you weren't technically seeing her but I wasn't quite sure how to word it so I just played it safe. It's a pity there has been no progression, you seem to really like her so I was hoping things would turn out as you hoped. Still it sounds like you both have fun together when you do see each other, so that's a good thing.

Thanks Rexx!

Because, well, why not, here are the last three videos I've made in the last year which I haven't yet posted ITT. First, a Swedish song by Ted Gärdestad, who none of you will have heard of, but you really should have, because he made really great music.

This is probably his biggest domestic hit, in the early 90s when he returned to music after having been away for a decade. The original, called "Blue Virgin Isles" in English, was a song he released internationally in the late 70s, and it was basically my favorite song in the world from age 12 to 16 or so. Search out the original, English language version, it's pretty great. ETA: Hey, why don't I make it easier for you, here's the original, English language version which was my favorite song for many years growing up: Click me. Ted ended up committing suicide in 1997, after making a (Swedish language only) comeback to the music scene in the early 90s and having battled depression for the better parts of two decades. Sad story.

Next up, well, another Ted Gärdestad song. Released only in Swedish, I can't really encourage you to search out a version you will listen to and enjoy. That said, this was released on his last album in the early 90s, a love song during his deepest depression, and describing, essentially, the beauty of love and compassion. It won't mean much of anything to any of you, but it's lived with me for the better part of 15 years, and I'm glad I decided to record it one day when I was hungover, having just taken the GMAT the night before and generally feeling pretty good about life. Again I would encourage anyone to listen to the original, even though the language barrier would mess things up. ETA: Here's the original, very beautiful, song.

Finally, there's this. I decided to record this the day after Trump was elected president, which seemed oddly fitting (and/or anticlimactic, I suppose). The song in itself doesn't mean much, but it's a nice piece of music, and there are no fewer than two (2!) key changes, which is always a good time for everyone.

Also, I would very much appreciate feedback on what I could do to make my covers more enjoyable to listen to. An example, which I'm keenly aware of but having a hard time adjusting to, is the fact that a lot of people would like my songs to be played much slower, and, in some sense, more closely resembling the originals. Sometimes I agree with this criticism, thinking it would make my songs more enjoyable, and sometimes I don't. My point is, I would like to hear more feedback on the things I do record. Thanks.

Fabian,

Why do you choose to perform the pieces at a faster rate? I am assuming you are not on speed

Rexx,

Mostly it's a product of how I usually play things. Slow = Boring. Probably need to work on that heh.

Anyway, recorded something new the other day. Almost definitely the most difficult thing I've youtubed, but apart from one bar I got completely wrong towards the end, I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Just started learning this recently and figured might as well post it. It's a work in progress at this point with many **** ups and fumbles, but I don't really care about how perfect it is at this point.

Cheers.

I like the sound of that bob, how/on what did you record it? Either way, keep it up!

Two weeks ago when I did the Chicago song, I also recorded something with song, not particularly meaning to upload it, but rather to see what it sounded like. Well, I decided to upload it anyway. I figure one video featuring my singing per year is fine, right? It's another Tim Minchin song, a lovely christmas ballad which is actually pretty great (the original (link), that is). It's kinda long and kinda slow until you get to the end, but I hope you enjoy it, let me know what you think.

Still getting the hang of the progression, but I think it has a pretty sound to it if you can only imagine him singing along. rip.
