I've thought that 50mm on a crop body might be kind of tight for close indoor situations, which is why I'm looking at a 35mm AF-S f/1.8 for a D5000. Since you have the D90 with the focus motor, you don't have to be as particular about getting AF-S lenses, but you still might want to consider a 35mm.

I think the D90 "kit" lens is usually an 18-105: http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Ni....6G-ED-VR.html which wouldn't be a terrible "walk around" lens with a little more reach than the usual 18-55 kit lens that comes on the lower end D3000/5000 cameras.

Those are really cool. Especially like the first one. Did you do multiple exposure/HDR? Rainforests are really challenging to even get something decent and you've got a really nice one there.

Btw I have a bunch of pics, tips and stories from the 6-day group photo tour in/around Glacier Natl Park that I just finished. I'm trying to decide whether to put it here or make a new TR thread. Thoughts?

suzzer - new thread

after more reading i think i'm gonna go with the 35mm as my indoor lens. still undecided on a 'walkabout'.

I try to always do multiple exposures and sometimes i use photomatix and sometimes i just put the exposures in layers and mask them together. So far seems to be about 50/50 for which one ends up looking better. Yeah it was pretty impossible to frame anything in the rain forest but I ended up lucking into a couple unexpectedly cool ones.

The 50 1.8 is more of a portrait lens than an indoor lens. It's a great lens (for anyone who can't stretch to a 1.4) but not what you were looking for Yeti.

Depends how 'walkaround' you want to be? You can get 28-300 lenses if you want that much flexibility (and the Tamron 28-300s aren't bad lenses tbh), but personally i'd rather have a small set of lenses that i can use depending on what i want.

Im looking to get a new camera and know nothing about them. I will be going to New Zealand for 2 months and want good photos but I've also wanted to get into photography for awhile now so I would be using it for pretty much everything.

Are dslrs and mirco four thirds the best options? im not sure on the pros/cons of each

my friend has this
http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gf1/
and says the sony NEX5 is also good.

i believe most dslrs can record HD vid (and i think the one i linked can be jailbroken for that as well) but can other micro 4/3rs do HD?

So a quick couple of questions...
1. Is photomatix the best program for a beginner to get into HDR photos?
2. Can anyone recommend me a site for HDR tutorials
3. Are there any free programs out there similar to photoshop that I can use to **** around with friends photos?
4. Right now all I have is a 50mm lens and a 70-300mm lens. I'm interested in landscape photography like suzzer... should I be getting something like a 10-20mm next?

I'm not sure about the first 3 questions, I've used photomatix and found it simple enough. I use Picassa just to tweak the shadows on my pics, but for the serious ones I need use Photoshop (when I get the time).

Mjaor Yes to 4. I have an 18mm lens and it's not wide enough. Landscape is all about getting cool stuff into the foreground and still be able to show sky and mountains.

yo mikekelley what type of gear do you use for your real estate photos. I enjoy architecture and RE pics, and wanna get into it. This guy is pretty good:

if you do it commercially are you working for RE agents? this is very interesting.

springsteen how did you process your photos? they seem oversaturated
The Photography Thread Quote
10-29-2010 , 09:41 AM
UFraw to JPG and then just sized/cropped

I don't do a lot of editing, which ones in particular look over-saturated? I know I had to turn down the saturation on the portraits I took, maybe i should have done so with the landscapes. For me it's harder to tell when a landscape is over-saturated compared to a portrait

maybe its a combo of saturation+ being too warm? idk im no pro

specifically the black sea & bulgaria town.

imo the roofs overpower the photo & detract from what seems to be a wide variety of color in the trees,

got a bunch of pics up from my summer trip to europe/africa/peru @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/maxchiswick/. all shot on d700

all are unedited, suggestions on doing (a) a mass edit in lightroom, (b) editing specific ones that i like a lot?

looks like i blurred the foreground figure instead of the background a few times which doesn't look so great

some faves:

@ chisness, imo you should make time for all the photos. don't try any mass actions in Ps or lightroom, the best way is to make them 1 by 1

here is one fast mod from me, i would kill to have a camera like yours and go to those places
