My first attempt at HDR photography:

I like the perspective of the first one with the slight convergence of the poll. Good white balance on the snow. Wish the umbrella wasn't in the frame.

The placement of the truck in the second photo disturbs me a bit and I'm not quite sure what the focus of the photo is. Maybe a shallower depth of field would help narrow your goal down.

I like the concept of the third photo. The vignette-like shadow on the right side throws off the balance though, so I'd either add vignetting to the whole photo in post, or fix whatever was causing that shadow in "pre".

I like what you did with the HDR here. I think that most people make the mistake of producing a photo that looks hyper-real and this looks like a realistic photo that happens to have a pretty broad dynamic range.

Something about the photo looks a bit flat to me. I think that for my tastes, I think I would have liked to see more lateral diagonal lines or maybe not see that path go straight up. With the hdr and large dof I think my brain would prefer to see more depth illustrated in the composition.

Some people say this picture is oversaturated, I can't see it. I generaly suck at post processing my pictures. I can work a month with one pick and never be satisfied with results. This picture the best one I've done and I shot a lot.

Also: what do you mean by "hyper-real" HDR photos?

This is a good example of very a common HDR practice: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mapgoblin/142350388/

Hung out with a friend last night, took a couple of shots before and after we ate a crapload of mussels. For some reason I like the way these two photos turned out even if they aren't exactly brilliant:

I think the second shot is my all time favorite.

P.S. Is there a 2p2 group on Flickr by any chance?

Here are two of mine from a recent trip to Ireland. One didn't upload well so I'll try to fix it later.

Here is an early Sunday morning in Cobh after a rainy Saturday night.

This is a shot from the top of Ross Castle of a few boats on the lake. I thought it was a pretty interesting shot but the colors didn't come out as I would have liked in the shot. My camera isn't the greatest in the world.

What do you think about these HDR images:

A bit oversaturated maybe?

Ratamahatta,

I like all of them but the last one. It's a little too oversaturated imo.

I agree. #4 is too saturated, but 1-3 can stand a little more saturation (and I'd crop a bit here and there too).
I love the buildings in Nyhavn.

I like this a lot, though I would go all B&W instead of keeping the eyes in color.

Spot metering seems way off in the bottom picture. Should've focused it on the white part? As I said, I'm just starting to learn macro shooting.

What are you focusing on?

I think that for macro photography, you can probably safely use manual focus and it might provide better results for you.

Couple quick shots from the weekend:

Made a martini with a new vodka from Washington State called Dry Fly:

The composition is just kind of OK for me, but I did like the B&W conversion:

Hello photography thread,

I've been into photography for awhile but I've never had the right camera do get into it seriously with. I'm looking for suggestions on a digital SLR, something like a rebel XT or nikon something or other. I really am not too keen on this stuff. I'm looking for the camera and a battery pack + lens combo if possible. I'm looking for somewhat of a cheap package (around or below like 700 if that's even possible)

Well for $900 you can get the Rebel XSi with the new kit lens that has IS: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Si_a_k_a_.html

If you are really intent on keeping your cost down to $700 you can get the Rebel XTi with the old kit lens for $600: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Rebel_XTi.html

Alternatively, you could get the body only XTi: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Rebel_XTi.html for $520 and get the better new kit lens for $175ish http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._5_5_6_IS.html

maybe decide how many megapixels you want, and check craigslist for pre-owned gear?

buyer beware, but might save several hundred on decent equip (body + lenses)

I feel like making your digital SLR choice solely on megapixels would be a mistake.

i guess i was inferring that he could save money by buying something like the older Rebel Xt (-i) if 8mp was enough for his needs.

I don't need anything crazy. I just would like to take better pictures than I am now with a 4mp point and shoot thing. I also dont want to blow the bank on it...I'd prefer new, but used is always an option. Thanks for the help thus far, I appreciate it!
