For pick # 8: Cyrano de Bergerac (1990 film in French) as played by Gérard Depardieu. He plays this character to perfection. I wanted to post the last scene/sequence of the film but it is not available on youtube. It is a grand and poignant scene as Cyrano fights off death only to succumb in the end, but with his fighting spirit and dignity still intact. - A fantastic scene of the fire of Cyrano done so well by Depardieu. A great culmination to an outstanding character performance.

Wicked Witch of the West is an outstanding pick, even if nostalgic. I also watched The Wizard of Oz on TV every year as a kid.

Round 7 Pick: Spider-man

Spider-man is my favorite character of all time. I got introduced to Spidey when I was a little kid watching a series of Marvel cartoons I had on VHS. Each VHS had two cartoons, one for that superhero/villain (Captain America, Hulk, Spiderwoman, ...) and the other cartoon was always a Spidey story. I loved him right away. Then, when I was a teenager, I started subscribing to the comic and I kept that subscription for about a dozen years. Needless to say, when the first big budget Spider-man movie (there were straight to video movies before) was announced I was very excited. I went to the premiere and was amazed by the visual effects and how true to the character the movie was. One important difference between movie-Spidey and comic-Spidey is that the movie version has the power to use spiderwebs while the comic book character invents the technology for them himself. This was a big deal for me, but this was corrected with the Andrew Garfield Spider-man reboot. The reboot character is even closer to the character I've always loved, he's a teenager who jokes a lot such as in the following scene

I think my main attraction to the character is that Spidey is a geek. He does really well in school and loves science. He's into chemistry instead of math, but I related a lot to that. I also greatly enjoy the joie de vivre of Spider-man. He's surrounded by tragedy (Uncle Ben dies, can't have a relationship with Mary Jane, loses job, ...), but he always takes on the obstacles with optimism and perseverance.

Spider-man is not the strongest, can't fly, but he's clever, fun and optimistic.

Picks so far:
1) Amelie
2) Vader
3) Guido Orefice
4) Anton Chigurh
5) Bryan Mills
6) Miranda Priestly
7) Spider-man

Round 8 Pick: Jeffrey Goines

Our introduction to Goines is the following scene:

In the scene he introduces Bruce Willis to the insane asylum. The intensity and the wackiness is off the charts. It's funny and awesome at the same time.

He also had a really funny monologue about companies predicting human behavior that has aged really well (the rise of data science has made predicting human behavior in many arenas possible or somewhat possible):

Very memorable character in one of my favorite films. Easy pick.

Picks so far:
1) Amelie as played by Audrey Tatou in Amelie.
2) Darth Vader as played by more than one person and voiced by James Earl Jones in multiple Star Wars movies.
3) Guido Orefice as played by Roberto Benigni in La Vita e Bella.
4) Anton Chigurh as played by Javier Barden in No Country for Old Men.
5) Bryan Mills as played by Liam Neeson in Taken.
6) Miranda Priestly as played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.
7) Spider-man as played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-man and the Amazing Spider-man respectively.
8) Jeffrey Goines as played by Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys.

Heaven help us all from marrying a Miss Swallow, especially when we could be rescued from a lifetime of misery by the likes of Susan Vance, played wonderfully by Kate Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. In these great screwball comedies, it's usually the man who must educate the woman, but here it's the woman who must teach the man. However it happens, in these films the right man and the right woman end up together. Susan decides nearly right away that David, the nerdy paleontologist, is the man for her, but she needs to win him over. How? As Stanley Cavell remarks it's not important what the couple does together as long as they do whatever they do together.

If you haven't seen the film, then the plot description can only begin to hint at the madness, but the film begins in the city, journeys to Connecticut, and end back in the city. Oh, and there's not one but two leopards involved, a missing dinosaur bone, and the usual assortment of screwball characters from an aunt (few women in screwball comedies have a mother) to a befuddled sheriff to a dog to Mr. Peabody from whom David is seeking a million dollars for his museum.

Susan steals the show although David, played by Cary Grant, has great moments as well. What Susan needs to do is simply show David, teach him, that she is just more fun to be with, and their series of adventures together convinces him. Susan is convinced right from the beginning. David is the thinker, distracted and abstract (the opening shot recalls Rodin's The Thinker). Susan is an irresistible and irrepressible life force, funny, and every bit the intellectual match for David.

And if we're smart enough, lucky enough, and open to a life of play and adventure, we might meet a Susan Vance, someone who sees what we possess as well. Some days, Bringing Up Baby is my favorite movie of all time because of Susan Vance.

william munny is a great pick, unforgiven is epic.
I particularly love how the entire film munny won't have a drink and can't do anything well. can't get on his horse, can't hit anything with his pistol, just all around awful cowboy.

then they kill his bff he downs the bottle of whiskey and instantly regains his form as a badass.

most ppl think it's his anger that sparks the return to form, but it's obv the liquor.
who ever heard of a sober gunslinger?

Getting down to the nitty gritty here. Most of the picks I feared getting sniped are on my board now, and it's time to add who I really really want (no, Spice Girls, it's not you).

So I'm going with someone who's not only a great character but a heartfelt pick as well. If you haven't noticed, I kinda like science fiction. And the best scifi movie of the young century is undoubtedly WALL-E. WALL-E is the last robot on an abandoned, trash-littered Earth. He doesn't say much because he doesn't have to -- he and his pet cockroach get along just fine on their own. He goes about his daily business compacting trash into cubes which he builds into giant garbage skyscrapers, and he collects nostalgic oddities like Rubik's Cubes, Zippo lighters, and sporks. He's got a special affinity for Hello, Dolly! He's nothing special, just a junky old robot doing his thing.

Then he meets Eve, and she's very interested in one of his trinkets -- a lone green sprout. And WALL-E is very interested in her, even if she does keep trying to blast him to smithereens. The two of them eventually make quite the pair (note the callback to the fire extinguisher!):

WALL-E is a magnificent film, from its beautiful story about two robots saving a wasted planet, to its stellar animation, to its profound message, and then some. In as bleak a light as director Andrew Stanton paints humanity's fate in this film, this optimistic little robot can't help but make everyone smile and aspire to better things.

(Interesting note: the guy who voices WALL-E, Ben Burtt, is the same guy who did sound effects for Star Wars -- meaning he came up with the now-iconic light saber hum, robot bleeps and bloops, and Darth Vader's breathing. Plus, he made famous the wonderful Wilhelm scream sound effect.)

Rd 1: Gny. Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket (R. Lee Ermey)
Rd 2: Tyler Durden / The Narrator in Fight Club (Brad Pitt / Edward Norton)
Rd 3: Spock in Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto)
Rd 4: Roy Batty in Blade Runner (Rutger Hauer)
Rd 5: Jack Torrance in The Shining (Jack Nicholson)
Rd 6: Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas (Joe Pesci)
Rd 7: Jackie Brown in Jackie Brown (Pam Grier)
Rd 8: WALL-E in WALL-E

R*R has been PMed.
