Clocking in at just a shade over ten and a half minutes, Christopher Walken calmly pulls off a vicious encounter without getting his suit mussed, his tie unknotted, or his hair mussed. Even the scarf remains in place.
While Vincent Coccotti is a great character, he can't be the king of all badasses when the only scene he's in he gets upstaged by a true badass, who doesn't have any henchmen there to protect him.

I was going to mention Hopper's performance, and the way these two played off against each other was as fine of a face-offs as you'll ever see.

But Hopper was in other scenes. Coccotti is in the movie for about eleven minutes, for this scene alone, and opens that character up in that little time.

Hopper does a brilliant job, and Clifford (Hopper) does subtly outfox Coccotti. But villains are often more revealing, dimensional, and entertaining than heroes, and Coccotti shoves a lot of villainy in such a short time,

That movie has an assload of great characters.

For my seventh pick, I'm choosing Joey "the Lips" Fagan, played by Johnny Murphy, in "The Commitments".

Van Morrison and Rory Gallaghar were both considered for the part of "The Lips", but Gallaghar was battling health issues brought on by alcoholism, and Morrison was just too much of an a**hole to put up with for the duration of the film's production. So the part went to Irish stage actor Johnny Murphy, who struck the perfect balance between street mystic and grifter poet.

From the moment he appears, with his ponytail and bucktooth grin, he starts spinning tall tales of his encounters with the greats of soul and rock and roll, playing trumpet behind everyone from Sam Cooke to the Beatles.

Vowing to take soul music to the people because "The Lord told me Irish brothers wouldn't be shooting the arses off of one another if they had soul", we see him play some horn, mentor the younger musicians, work his way into the pants of the female singers, and spew line after line of bull**** about his past exploits.

We see through his bull****, but we're never sure if he does. And we don't care. There is enough truth in the mix, and he does it with such easy charm that we're buying whatever he's selling. And the kids in the band, and all of us, are better off for it.

1. Chance the Gardner, as played by Peter Sellers in Being There.
2. Alex SeLarge, as played by Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange
3. Yoda, as played by Frank Oz, a puppet, a dude in a frog constume, and some expensive CGI in the Star Wars movies
4. Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes, as played by Andy Griffith in A Face in the Crowd
5. Vincenzo Coccotti, as played by Chistopher Walken in True Romance
6. Tom Hagen, as played by Robert Duvall, in the Godfather
7. Joey "the Lips" Fagan, as played by Johnny Murphy in The Commitments

Exactly my conundrum when I looked at my draft list yesterday. Bunch of crazy white guys. I started thinking about who I might draft to rectify the situation, and to be honest, I was drawing a blank for quite some time. Two women I would've picked (Ripley and Marge) had already been taken. Then I start thinking that maybe there aren't enough great female characters to pick from. I'd feel like a douche picking some B+ femme fatale just to fill out my roster. Tokenism isn't the solution. Fact is, Hollywood rarely puts great, strong female characters into movies. And when you do see them, they're usually either a love interest or a parody of feminism. I'm not up on the B&Ws like Zeno and John Cole (who both added a few movies to my watchlist). There are some great characters portrayed by black actors, but nothing was striking my fancy. Then it hit me.

Now as I sit here bumping the groovin' ass soundtrack, I'm glad to add Jackie Brown to my squad. I love a great female lead, and they definitely come too few and far between. Pam Grier's portrayal of Jackie Brown is a thing to behold. She's stunningly beautiful, of course, but the most appealing thing about her character is how in control she is, how composed she is while running a shell game on those who would use and abuse her without a second thought. She's had a tough life, but she doesn't cry about it. She doesn't care about getting even. She stands tall and proud and independent -- she's been through the ringer and she's found her way out, so you're damn right she's gonna seize her opportunity. (NSFW language.)

Jackie won't be played by the men in her life. No way is she going to be a kept woman, some scuzzbunny sitting at home all day smoking weed and waiting for her sugar daddy to come home and do what he pleases. But she doesn't act out of anger or thirst for revenge, she does what she does for the best reason of all -- for herself.

She charms the hell out of Max Cherry, and she outwits the rest. She's a classic character who's been there and done that, and, like she says, she can't afford to start all over again. Plus, she's got great taste in music.

Rd 1: Gny. Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket (R. Lee Ermey)
Rd 2: Tyler Durden / The Narrator in Fight Club (Brad Pitt / Edward Norton)
Rd 3: Spock in Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto)
Rd 4: Roy Batty in Blade Runner (Rutger Hauer)
Rd 5: Jack Torrance in The Shining (Jack Nicholson)
Rd 6: Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas (Joe Pesci)
Rd 7: Jackie Brown in Jackie Brown (Pam Grier)

Funny thing is, when Jackie Brown first came out, I was so pumped up to see it. Tarantino was coming off the Pulp Fiction success, and I wasn't expecting such a simple, character driven film. So I was a little disappointed in the movie at first. It didn't have that catchy, disjointed narrative or that slick feel that his previous movies had.

But then I grew up a little bit and saw it again a few years later and I found myself doing a complete 180. Now it's one of my favorite movies.

I knew when I started that I should pick characters of one actor, or one director, or one year, or at least tried to focus in some way. Now I'm running out of time and have too many must-picks left.

From the great romantic comedy His Girl Friday, I pick the Female lead Hildy Johnson, played by Rosalind Russell; she does a superb job opposite Carry Grant and a great supporting cast and is more than his equal in stealing scenes and delivering lines, quick banter, and hustle, and brains, and she is better looking to boot.

Link about the film:

2.Sanjuro Tsubaki (Yojimbo, Sanjuro)
3.Cool hand Luke (Cool Hand Luke)
4.Norma Desmond (Sunset Boulevard)

Tampopo

Tampopo is the first and the best of the noodle westerns.

Many consider it to be the Noodle Shane. But it’s not. In reality it is the Noodle Rocky, but it would be fair to say it is a little bit of both.

A lone stranger rides into town. OK, he’s not alone, he has a partner, and he doesn’t ride, he drives a milk truck, but you get the idea.

He’s a reformed gunfighter.

Well, no, he’s a former welterweight, and he hasn’t reformed anything, but it’s virtually the same thing.

His name is Shane!

Well, no, it’s actually Goro, but you get the idea. (Shane is played by Goro who is played by Yamazaki Tsutomu.)

He’s looking for a family in need of help!

Truthfully, he’s looking for a bowl of noodles, but that’s a minor quibble.

He finds a farm family being bullied by ranchers. Or maybe it’s a widowed noodle shop owner being bullied by neighbors. She wants to be the best; she wants to be the Champ. She wants to be ROCKY!!!

Well, actually she’s perfectly happy being Tampopo (Dandelion)!

Rocky is played by Tampopo who is played by Miyamoto Nobuko.

Tampopo begs Goro to be her noodle mentor! He agrees!

They go on spy missions!

They get experts!!

They do road work!!!

(See above youtube)

Tampopo gets a Makeover!!!!

Tampopo’s the champ!!!111

Once again, American Knowhow and Yankee Ingenuity save the day! Well, no, not exactly, but you get the idea.

So far:
1. Hit Man's Booking Agent, played by the stunning Michelle Reis, Fallen Angels
2. Will Kane, by Gary Cooper, High Noon
3. Wilmer, by the great Elisha Cook, Jr., Maltese Falcon
4. Nora Charles, by the charming Myrna Loy, Thin Man Series
5. Leeloo, by the rambunctious Milla Jovovich, 5th Element
6. Jessica Rabbit, by herself, the talent-heavy Jessica Rabbit, Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
7. Goro & Tampopo's Relationship, by the impostering Miyamoto Nobuko & Yamazaki Tsutomu, Tampopo

Round 7

Character: Capt. Louis Renault
Movie: Casablanca
Portrayed by: Claude Rains

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that Louie is still available. Louie is a very colorful character. Rick obviously went early but Louie is worth a pick too. The greatest movie ever made has several great characters. He is both humorous and cynical. He has tremendous dialog and is the main comic relief. In fact he has two of the greatest lines in film history. The aforementioned shocked, SHOCKED line and of course "round up the usual suspects".

Rick and Louie are destined for a beautiful friendship!

So far:
Jack Burton
Rocky Balboa
Fast Eddie Felson
Virgil Hilts
Bruno Anthony
The Hanson Brothers
Louis Renault

Round 8

Character: The Wicked Witch of the West
Movie: The Wizard of Oz
Portrayed by: Margaret Hamilton

The Wicked Witch is one of the most iconic movie characters ever. She is mean, she is evil, she is scary and she is most definitely wicked. When I was a kid I was absolutely terrified by the Wicked With of the West.

Back in those days we didn't have streaming or DvRs or DvDs or VHS or cable. Hell we didn't even have UHF! It was the 3 networks and a local channel. But at last once a year one of the networks would broadcast the Wizard of Oz in prime time. It was an event not to be missed. The witch even has her own creepy theme music that plays when she is on screen. This was always a tip off to me to close my eyes and clutch my mother.

This is also a diversity pick to get a woman of color. Green is a color right? The last thing I need is some runny nosed, drooling SJW type telling me I am a Nazi because I have all white males
