"sometimes, nothing can be a real cool hand",

Many are different only to be different; because different is supposed to be cool. A few honestly don’t fit in, are different by nature and can’t be any other way: Cool Hand Luke brings that to the screen. The role that should have garnered Newman an Oscar is played to perfection. His smile is as warm as the sun, he gambles like tomorrow is not coming, he eats eggs like the next meal is a week away, he fetches snapping turtles, he boxes with all that is in him, he escapes on a whim, he digs holes and fills them in, he is brutalized and dehumanized and kicked in the faced. In the end ‘The Man’ wins - but Luke’s spirit fills the sky.

round three: Jeanne d'Arc

Arguably one of the top 10 acting performances of all time, Renée Jeanne Falconetti brings this famous person to life without saying a word. Joan has been the subject of several films adaptations since this one, but none have come close to capturing the humanity of Joan.

While I am an atheist, this film and Falconetti's portrayal came the closest I have ever experienced to making me understand religious ecstasy.

When you see this you will never forget some of her moments.

Here is the entire film.

Round Two: Marge Gunderson

Go ahead name a bigger female badass. Go ahead! That's right you cant so sit down and shut up.

Quote:
So, that was Mrs. Lundegaard on the floor in there. And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. And those three people in Brainerd. And for what? For a little bit of money? There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don'tcha know that? And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day. Well. I just don't understand it.

Round 3

Character: "Fast Eddie" Felson
Movies: The Hustler, The Color of Money
Portrayed by: Paul Newman

Fast Eddie is a pool hustler. Maybe the best ever? But Eddie has a lot going on and is a complex character. He is bold and confident but just maybe not ready for the bigboy table. He has all the skill in the world but still needs to learn how to win. By the time he finally does its because of a series of setbacks and tragedies and by then it is over. Eddie finally gets his hero/nemesis Minnesota Fats to concede the crown.

Eddie shows up again decades later. His pool game is rusty as he has been out of the life but he knows the racket well and mentors a young wanabee. Eddie is still a first rate hustler.

So far:
Jack Burton
Rocky Balboa
"Fast Eddie" Felson

Clovis, you took my next pick. I used Joan as my avatar years ago. I agree completely with your write up. I am also an atheist, but this has always been one of my favorite films to show to students. The role supposedly brings bad luck, as it did for Seberg and Bergman, and Falconetti never acted again. Her grandson was also the first person to die of HIV-AIDS in France.

Been meaning to view that film for years, on someone's advice. Will have to finally do so.

I have a bad feeling my next pick is gonna get sniped and it will be a real shame.

I'm actually really suprised this character hasn't been taken already.

My third pick is Guido Orefice from La Vita é Bella. Guido is an optimistic guy that falls in love with a woman from a higher class. He bumps into her everywhere and does crazy things to win her attention. The way he says "Bongiorno principesa" can be both funny/romantic

and sad/romantic

He's capable of anything to keep his son from realizing he was in a concentration camp and making life as good as possible for his son in extreme circumstances. The following scene is funny and unforgettable:

Roberto Benigni won two Oscars for this movie (he was the director, so he went to receive the prize when it won best foreign film). His excitement when winning was really fun to watch. In particular, here's the video when the movie won best foreign film:

Picks so far:
Amerlie
Darth Vader
Guido Orefice

This pick is the nuts. And I forgot to mention the Chance pick as being awesome as well!

I have a personal story about meeting Peter Sellers. In the late sixties my Dad worked in the Canadian Embassy in London and my oldest sister attended a private school there with Peter Sellers son. They were in a play together at the school. I attended the play and Peter Sellers showed up with a handful of T-shirts from his latest movie also starring Ringo Starr called The Magic Christian and handed me one. I cherished it for many years and it eventually wore out and is now is gone but I was able to interact with the legendary Peter Sellers for a few seconds and that has always been a far-out memory.

I PMed NhlNut. He'll get two picks and then it's my turn. I don't know if I'll be able to use my computer for the next 12 hours, so I'll PM my pick to mrbaseball and do the write up later.

3rd Pick - Lucky he's still available at this point,
It's hard to be the son of a legend. Even harder if the legend is the Godfather.

Spoiler:
Michael Corleone

The tragic hero of one of the great American stories.

4th Pick - You need a job done in a jungle somewhere in Southeast Asia? Only one man will do.

Spoiler:
John Rambo

For my next pick, I'll take Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men. The embodiment of the unstoppable evil force. Unforgettable character. My favorite scene is the following:

He's so creepy and intense in that scene.

Picks so far:
Amelie
Vader
Guido
Anton

It seems my picks alternate between the good and the bad.

mrbaseball has been PMed.

Round 4

Character: Capt. Virgil Hilts aka "The Cooler King"
Movie: The Great Escape
Portrayed by: Steve McQueen

Hilts is a prisoner of war but doesn't want to be. So he escapes, over and over and over again. But he keeps getting caught. Each time he gets caught he gets put in the "cooler" which is what earns him his nickname. He seems to think of the cooler as home and happily bounces his baseball off the wall all day long.

Hilts reluctantly joins in the major escape plan put forth by the leaders of the prisoners. Unfortunately their tunnel came up just a bit short.

Once out Hilts goes on his own adventure with a stolen German motorcycle. He is always cool as a cucumber.

So far:
Jack Burton
Rocky Balboa
"Fast Eddie" Felson
Virgil Hilts

I just wish they had followed Tevis' book instead of creating a largely different story for the sequel.

My third pick:

The shark worthy of his own badass theme music, and the shark responsible for the birth of the modern blockbuster - I present badass mofo, Jaws.

This is a classic man vs nature clash that put unreasonable fear into countless people while swimming in the ocean. I grew up on a small island and swam in the ocean a bunch. Kids used to scream all the time, "Jaws!!!" For a few moments I would feel chills, then we all pretended to swim to shore as fast as we could because we didn't want to get devoured by Jaws.

Jaws is an all-timer when it comes to villains. He can strike out of nowhere, has protection of the ocean for stealth, and has sharp teeth that will **** you up! (Just ask Quint)

I have had that book (Color of Money) sitting on my kindle for about 6 months but I think it is next. I understand it is much different from the movie and I honestly didn't care all that much for the movie but loved The Hustler. I also read The Hustler but it has to be going on 30 years now. I probably watched the Hustler 10-15 times

Fourth Pick - Private Jackson from Saving Private Ryan

Snipers in movies are badass, and Private Jackson turns prayers into something kickass and terrifying. He has ice in his veins, and prays while he sends his foes to the afterlife. He plays a vital role in the movie: disarms an MG nest on the Normandy beach, kills a fellow sniper, and dispatches countless Germans during the final battle sequence. He went out like a champ, it took a tank to take him down.

I actually re-watched Saving Private Ryan last weekend and this is a pro pick! I agree that Private Jackson was the most interesting character featured in the movie.
