ok this is the official thread.

when it is your turn post the book you are going to be adapting and a description.

we will be doing a 10 round draft.

you MUST draft a director.
other than that you are fee to draft as you like for the remaining 9 slots.

some possibilities include, screenwriter to adapt the novel, DP, music score.
but aide from actors and director the slots can be filled as you like.

when casting actors please give us a brief description of the character they are going to play.

there will be 4hrs allotted for each selection and then you will be skipped (at night this time limit is not enforced. we will say for sake of clarity that night begins at 1am est. if anyone objects to that time frame speak up, but know you are free to PM someone else your write up/selection if you won't be around/awake).

i am going to PM domer2 the list of everyone participating in random order then someone will need to give me a random sequence of #s (they have sites online that will give you a random generated list) and that will determine the draft order.
the draft will be snaked so the last person will have 2 picks at once.

if there are any other questions let me know, but this is a pretty std draft and i'm not big on rules so pretty much anything goes (within reason) just try and uphold the spirit of the draft.

i feel like there was something else i wanted to post but now i can't remember.

i'm going to go through the signup thread so i can get a list of everyone and we can get going.

oh i'm going to list everyone that posted an interest in the sign up thread.

when the time comes if they decide they don't want to participate we'll just remove them from the list.
if someone wants to join after the draft order has been established they are welcome they just will go last.

this is the draft order.
when you have made your selection please PM the next person.
please read the OP for the format of the draft.

i have PM'd II.II.II.
he has till sometime tomorrow morning (i won't be awake but be reasonable).

fwiw i'm not some kindv rule maker in this draft, if ppl have questions/concerns we can come to a democratic solution.

also busto has run a bunch of these before so if you have a question and i'm not around he's a good person to ask.
and he's a good person to turn to when it comes to questions of when to skip someone.

very excited to see what everyone comes up, remember that many people may not have read the book you choose so the more detailed your write ups are the more fun it will be for everyone.

ya sigh I'm gonna be sad if my top pick gets sniper.

also fwiw your book DOES NOT COUNT as a pick.
post your book, give us a brief summary (no spoilers) and then make your first pick.

once someone has been drafted they are off the table (you can draft them again yourself to play another role or do another job ie: acting 1st round directing 2nd round)
however books are open to as many ppl as want to adapt them.

Curious to see if two people end up adapting the same book. Doubtful, but it would be fun to watch their visions diverge.

(j/k)

I'm under massive life-crunch right now and I'm going to have to drop this draft or give my spot to someone else. I'm so sorry to be a flaky punk, but I just can't do it right now.

so be strict on the time limit for senorkeed as he said he wanted to participate in the movie thread but never officially signed up so not 100% he's in.

For my novel, I select the greatest science fiction novel ever written:

Spoiler:

It's basically a sublight first contact story, where humankind is spread out among a hundred stars in a few hundred light years of Old Earth. A civilization of starfaring human traders, known as the Qeng Ho, detects the first known alien transmission from an unusual star. They form a fleet and go mount a trade expedition to the star, and encounter another human civilization, who are doing much the same thing. They form a tentative and controversial alliance with this other human civilization.

The alien civilization are a species resembling spiders, and at the time of the two fleets' arrivals the Spiders are at roughly a level of technology of the interwar period of 20th century Earth. So, basically, the Qeng Ho and the other human civilization (the Emergents) are detecting the Spider's equivalent of the Hitler broadcast in the film Contact.

There's a twist in the Spider's system: the star is known as the On/Off star. Every 215 years out of every 250, the star's output drops precipitously. All life on the Spiders' planet hibernates for these 215 years, then lives 35, then hibernates. Most Spiders live 3, or at most 4 of these cycles.

The two fleets, the Qeng Ho and the Emergents, cooperate during their initial exploration of the Spiders' world, while the entire planet is in its 200-year hibernation. The Emergents break the uneasy truce and ruthlessly attack the Qeng Ho fleet. The Qeng Ho counterattack and cripple the Emergents' fleet. The remnants of the fleet, now under Emergent control but consisting of the survivors of both fleets, will be unable to leave the Spider system without help from the Spider civilization. Help that the Spiders will not be able to substantially provide for several of their hibernation cycles.

This is simply describing the bare bones first fifth of the novel, excluding all characters and neglecting several major storylines. Does this sound too complicated for a feature film? Does this seem unfilmable? Sure. That's why I'm selecting, as a director, one of the great visionaries of our time. A man who specializes in taking concepts that would seem to be unfilmable and making critically-acclaimed, blockbuster pictures.

That's right.

Spoiler:

THAT'S RIGHT MOTHER****ERS!

Does this project seem ungainly and unfilmable? AHAHAHAHAHAHAH Jim Cameron takes ungainly and unfilmable sci fi scripts and ****s them out ant then eats them for breakfast and then ****s out that breakfast and turns it into film which he then films a movie on and then digitizes it and adds special effects and then turns that ****ted out digitally enhanced footage into a hit ****ing movie!

People said that confusing cyborg nonsense was nonsense. BOOM TERMINATOR. People said that he was too young and inexperienced to do the Alien sequel justice. How are you supposed to take a masterpiece, with a tiny budget, and make anything but a hack sequel? Careerwise, Aliens was supposed to be

But it was a masterpiece, in some ways superior to the original Aliens film, one of the very few sequels to make that claim.

And I won't bore you with detailed descriptions of the rest of Cameron's filmography: very consistently, Cameron has been dismissed, written off, and his pictures have been declared as white elephant boondoggles. But from The Abyss, to Terminator 2, to Aquaman, to Avatar, his movies have thrilled audiences and kept dem hater$ firmly rustled.

But SenorKeed, you might say. This project is far beyond anything Cameron has ever done before. I mean just the fraction of the plot you describe makes the Avatar plot look like Fern Gully. Well that might be a valid concern if we were to be making a standard three and a half hour Jim Cameron picture.

But we're not making a movie. We're making a 10 hour miniseries. No, not on HBO. **** them, they were all like "mew mew mew we like to plan our ****ty series 9 years in advance".

Deepness in the Sky, episode 1 premiers on Friday at 10 PM Eastern on Starz, mother****ers
