I just didnt think it was worth all the praise it got. I found some of the other Oscar nominated movies to be better. I thought the best actor award was deserving though. I thought they never showed the end of the main charachter and how he died. If I had to choose best picture I would have picked JUno or In the valley of ......
Also many said it was too violent and i found that to be untrue also. Yeah he killed a bunch but I many movies are worse

The movie BEGINS with a monologue with him, so he's not exactly a throw-away character. The movie's three monologues, all center around his character. it begins and ends with him. The movie's message involves TLJ's representation of the old way/old world and is interpreted through him.

Lozen, if you didnt like it thats fine. Everyones entitled to their opinion. To say it was 'no more than a steven Segal movie with better actors' is just ridiculous though.

I chatted with one of the actors that was nominated for best supporting actor and he was not thrilled about the movie also. He laughed at my analogy and said it was not to far of from his own.
Hey its how I felt. Did I enjoy the movie. It was OK to and i am always a fan of anything Tommy Lee Jones does.
You are right would this make you happier
It is a Jean van claude Damme movie with better actors

Oddly enough, I agree with every grievance he has with the film. However, I simply liked these things he didn't.
For example, he seems to think it's a generic thriller, with no character development, and while accepting that and being happy with a well put-together chase film he felt cheated when they didn't show the pay-off (the Anton/Moss showdown). I completely understand his annoyance, but simply like that very choice. No real explanation. I just liked it where he didn't.
I thought it was one of the few negative reviews that was acceptable.

this review is pretty silly when you realize that the reviewer writes generic thrillers about violent men killing each other that feature no character development and villains that are far more absurd than chigurh (that a guy who came up with the albino character in pale horse coming can bash chigurh for being absurd blows my ****ing mind). his books are fun for what they are but he's basically mccarthy without the amazing prose and depth. this is the most hypocritical movie review of all time unless he somehow holds books to lesser standards than he does movies.

so this is a steven seagal movie with better actors but you think juno was the best movie of the year? that is insane sir. juno's about as deep as a kiddie pool. but hey, wasn't that dialogue witty.

No i said I would pick Juno or In the valley of Elijah over No Country. I never said I didnt like the movie I just said I ddint think it desreved best picture. The others I have not seen yet. I will watch the Oil one soon but doubt I willw atch the others. Obviously you didnt think Juno was great. Its subjective.

Re: No Country For Old Men
What to people get out of this movie? It's basically a chase movie with a lot of gratuitous violence imo. The theme seems pretty bleak as well - not any redeeming quality to this movie. The psychopath being killed in the car accident would have made for a better ending to mirror his belief in the randomness of life.
Can someone who liked this movie articulate their view?

Re: No Country For Old Men
While I don't agree with people who argue that the ending was terrible, I *do* believe that a less jarring ending that might have accomplished the same thing would have been to have Ed Tom Bell's speech as a voiceover rather than as a conversation. Sort of like mirroring the intro. I think people just weren't expecting the movie to end there whereas with a voiceover (over similar imagery as the beginning) you can mentally prepare yourself for the end.

Re: No Country For Old Men
After all the hype, I finally watched this last night.
Reminded me more of Desperado than Fargo.
Re: The Motel scene - my first reaction was that Anton was in an adjacent motel room, and had pulled the cash through the vent, knowing that this was Moss' method from the last place, hence no stand-off with the Sheriff.
Also, in the gas station, where Anton is discussing the importance of the coin, right at the end I was sure he said "or not"
It seemed that Woody Harrelson and Tommy Lee were conspiring to ruin a good film. It's a good thing they failed - but they tried.

My friend thought his casting was a reference to Natural Born Killers especially when he says, "He's a psychopathic killer, but so what? There's plenty of them around."

Re: No Country For Old Men
I just finished rewatching this and give it a 4/5. I'm pretty sure I 'get it' but it really does detract from the movie to have a very structured plot (the chase) followed by less structured, reflective events. Overall, very good movie.

Re: No Country For Old Men
One thing that added to the "Gravitas" of this movie was the casting. Two actors that I think may not be appreciated enough are Woody & Tommy Lee....I thought they were both spot on in this.
