Does anyone know any places to play volleyball? Both beach and indoor?
I don't mean courts but rather something like people getting together to play some volleyball. And looking for something more serious than just bumping the ball on the other side of the net.

Thanks.

Just moved to the UWS last week on 106th for law school. First time living in nyc. Finally finished furnishing the apartment, but still need some artwork for the wall. I'd like some original canvases, and have been trying to figure out the best place to pick some up at an affordable price (pretty much counts out most galleries and shows). I don't mind student artists or just hobbyists looking to clean out their supply.

I've been checking out craigslist daily, but would like to make a day of checking out art in person. The best I've come up with so far is Union Square on Sunday, where they have 58 stalls for people to sell their wares (since the farmers market isn't open that day). My concern is that the vast majority of these stalls will be selling jewelry and such. I've looked into hitting some of the "art markets", like "artists and fleas" at Chelsea Market, but they seem to focus on fashion and jewelry.

Essentially, I'm wondering if there are places in the city where large numbers of amateur artists (painters) gather to sell their works.

Thanks!

Not sure what low cost is to you, however this might be of interest

There's also a street art fair on University, I believe in the fall, though I tend to find the art falls in one of a few categories (ultra-modern or nature scenes).

Ah, very cool. That looks great.

We hit Union Square yesterday. There were probably 15-20 artist stalls set up (an artist said the numbers were low due to the heat). Picked up an original 18x36 canvas for $80, and she threw in two 6x8 drawings. Colorful abstract city scape.

Also went to Chelsea Market for lunch. Little too crowded for me since it was prime time on a summer Sunday, but there were a ton of cool places to eat. I highly recommend the taco joint. "Artist and Fleas" and the ID pop up shop there had a handful of artists who work with canvases. Some pretty cool stuff, but would only be able to get prints. Originals were uber out of our price range, but still reasonable ($300+).

There's a street art fair coming up in Washington Square, so I'll make that my next art shopping trip. http://www.timeout.com/newyork/thing...it#tab_panel_4

What kind of recommendation do you have for $150 dinner including drinks for wife and I. Preference for area is non Times Square unless there is something that really fits the bill there....perhaps Harlem as we are there for portion of our stay.

Bonus points for somewhere than can make great cocktails

Esca fits that price range imo. If you like seafood/sushi. Get the crudo.

Just had some seriously good cookies for breakfast. Because I'm a god-damned adult and I felt like having cookies for breakfast.

Levain Bakery, they bake their cookies mega-thick so the outside is a little crunchy and the inside is still half-baked and kinda like cookie dough. It was goooooooood man.

things I like:
  • The Totto collection - Totto yakitori, soba and ramen restaurants. All good stuff. YUM
  • Afghan food. Ariana on 9th ave was super good
  • Mandoo bar korean dumplings in koreatown
  • Wafels and Dinges food trucks
  • the IMAX screen at AMC Lincoln Loews in the UWS. 2nd biggest movie screen in the world
  • times square at night is still pretty cool imo. I'm not 100% jaded. Plus at 2AM there's few tourists and the lights are cooler in the dark
  • having a dollar slice place near me that's actually reasonable quality pizza
  • seriously those cookies from Levain bakery, super great

Thanks.
There are beach volleyball courts in Central Park. I have never played since I suck, but from the few times I walked by, the competition seemed decent (with most people spiking the ball).

Place is a conservative dump that supports right-wing nut jobbery, not to mention that if you're in ****ing Manhattan, you can do just a bit better than Chick-Fil-A

+1, and as someone who has had chick-fil-a's next to his house for most of my life, I find them to be very overrated. So many better chicken places in NYC

Going to Turntable Chicken Jazz in Herald Square for lunch tomorrow. I've heard good things. Pretty excited.

Disagree, haters are crazy

Chik-fil-A is awesome and delicious. The only bad part about CFA opening in manhattan is that there's only one and it will probably be swamped 6 days a week and closed on sunday.

I like CFA and am lucky enough to live near one of their few Tri-State locations (in a county where everything is closed on Sunday), however I'd say I still don't make it there more than once or twice a year.

It's especially great when you don't have one. Moved to vegas and now I eat CFA every opportunity I get because there isn't one here (yet: 2016 ftw). Xmas at the in-laws' in VA I must get cfa like once a day.

It's extra good to me also because I didn't eat it for like 5 years in protest of their stupid ****ing contributions to asinine hate "charities" -- last I checked they dialed way way way back on that, so I eat my cfa and make my own donations, sort of like carbon credits. Whatever helps me sleep at night I guess...

Anybody who is excited about another fast food restaurant opening in New York should be evicted from the city. Go drive up the rent in Charlotte for a few years, and maybe take a couple Dunkin Donut franchises with you.
