From what I know $150 or less in a decent part of Manhattan is going to be hard to find. Know there are cheaper places where a whole floor shares bathrooms, etc., but cheaper hotels still tend to be $200+.

Times square sucks frankly, but for tourists the best place to stay depends on your plans. That being said, I think your location is going to end up being dictated by your budget.

consider looking at airbnb.com. nyers evacuate manhattan in droves in the summertime and you could potentially get a whole apartment (granted, that might be 300sq) to yourself for a fraction of the cost of a hotel room. Look at places in east village, west village, greenwich village, flatiron, UES. anywhere but times square, seriously.

celi,

I don't actually think it's that big a deal where you stay in Manhattan as a first time visitor. Everything pinnnnnk suggested makes sense. Airbnb is a very good option to consider for your budget. And her locations are good - I personally think the Flatiron/Union Square area is one of the most convenient to stay for the places a visitor like you will likely want to visit.

If you'd rather stay in a hotel, $150 for a 3-star should be doable in July. Your best bet is to go to http://www.betterbidding.com/ . Read the FAQs, then go to the NYC boards and you'll get expert assistance on Priceline/Hotwire bidding strategies for your needs.

Brushstroke/Annisa/Gari would all be solid, haven't been to Adour, wd50 is awesome but you need to go with people who appreciate that style of food. As far as Yakitori goes its almost all in midtown west (totto being the most recognizable) or east village (taisho, vilage yokocho) Totto is probably the best of the ones I've been to but picking based on proximity might be best.

did u like wd50 the most?

Brushstroke and Annisa both seem really awesome. People seem to recommend Gari a lot so i'm pretty curious about it, but only 2/3 of us really like sushi...

If you go to Gari, make sure you go with people who would enjoy 10+ servings omakase style. It's definitely filling and quite an experience, but I'm not sure it would be my thing if I only ate California rolls. Also which Gari were you looking at? Upper east > the other two.

Annisa is awesome and although I haven't been to Brushtroke I have heard great things. I am a big fan of WD-50 but it isn't for everyone so maybe not the best place for a group unless everyone is adventurous.

All three of those places are only properly experienced with tasting menus imo, so that may factor in as well.

Oh definitely doing taste menus and wine pairings. Between wd-50 and annisa, which would you pick?

I'm really curious about Brushstroke. Kaiseki meals go from like $400 to over a thousand+

Never been to the other ones but I would recommend against we'd-50. Too much trying to be creative, not enough taste.

I'm not going to recommend against wd-50, but I will say its more hit and miss because it's experimental. Also desert service was always the best part of the tasting menu and their pastry chef recently left to open empellon. I've been to wd-50 3 times: once was outstanding (one of the best dining experiences ive ever had) and the other two times were solid.

Annisa I've been once. It was impeccable on all accounts and is a very focused and well executed menu

Saw that too, have a feeling the site will crash when everyone tries to get their free tix. Definitely going.

Hi all,
any recommendations for cheaper omakase? I'm thinking <$100.

Sushi You has got to be the best omakase value in the city. I think it's somewhere between $40 and $80. There is nothing glamorous about the location or the decor, the crowd is mostly japanese businessmen but the sushi here is the real deal. Chef Miku is softspoken but pretty witty if you can get him chatting. Of course the only way to go is to sit at the bar and let him place the pieces directly on your plate. The omakase is traditional, nothing like the torched salmon and fried tomato at Gari, but it's delicate and fresh and a great value.

I like Yakitori Taisho for cheap and drunken late night eats. Chicken skins, chicken hearts and meatballs are very good.

To me the food itself isn't hit-or-miss, I have loved the tasting menu all three times I have eaten there. That being said I have yet to have an experience with more than one dinner companion (2 of 3 times was a group) where everyone liked the tasting menu.

Think if you are adventurous and like most things you will like most meals there but hard to have a group without someone being a bit picky (and WD-50 tasting isn't great if you are picky/not adventurous).

Syous,

I've been to WD-50 3 times. I'm super adventurous wrt food and expect some misses in any molecular gastronomy style meal. The first two times I felt a lot of the food was way bigger on technique than taste, and only a couple of real homeruns each time. Both times, though, the desserts were incredible. The third time I went, we just did cocktails and dessert, and it was outstanding.

Recently went to The House, located in a renovated carriage house on 17th between Park & Irving. Has a fantastic atmosphere and is an excellent choice for a date. The menu was mostly American, with a touch of a Mediterranean influence, and they have a fairly solid wine list.

Food was very good, but not great, but the decor makes up for any deficiencies in the menu. Recommend for a second or third date.
