I have another friend who is paying $1700 for a 1br in Williamsburg, whereas we pay $2400 for a comparable, if not nicer quality 2br in manhattan just on the other side of the bridge.

All of these examples are outliers, I assume, though? I got fortunate and they got a little screwed I'm taking it; Total NYC resident noob, here.
Thats just sick pricing man,, 3,700 for a 2.5 .. wow pricing has really shot up.

It is sick pretty much everywhere. I am renting a nice sized one-bedroom in a nice doorman co-op building in Greenwich Village. I pay $2,950 and am getting a steal since it is a co-op.

jws, can you post pics to give an idea of what we can get? That's more-or-less the top of my range. What does the coop entail?

(edit: obv no pressure, since it's your personal space. Totally understand if you don't want to.)

This is the best place to search:
http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rentals/ny...%20or%20school

You can even search by street name if you'd like and you will get an aggregate of all listings, usually with pics.

Please note that most NYC apartment pics turn out ****ty because of the small spaces

Agree that Streeteasy is the best. I knew I wanted to live close to some buddies who are at 7th and Charles in the West Village and my GF lived on Bank off of West 4th. Also wanted to be close enough to catch the 6 train, so basically walked from 4th to 7th Ave. on 15th, 14th, 13th, 12th, 11th and 10th and wrote down the address of every doorman building. Looked them all up on streeteasy and found a few with apartments in my price range.

Might have pics at home but to give an idea, I have a separate kitchen that is narrow but has a full oven, dishwasher and fridge at the expense of little counter space. Bedroom is probably 11x15 with a bathroom right outside. Main room serves as living room (and could serve as dining room if I wanted) and is probably 12x28.

Is Streeteasy usable for summer purposes, or is it mostly going to be for longer leases? At first glance it seems more like the latter, but I may be missing something.

It is for longer. To be honest I am not really sure how people do short-term rentals other than NYU housing over the summer and through Craigslist.

Would have to imagine there are good NYC subletting sites but I have never used them.

WELL, the village is one thing, BK is another, then again, i still think its 1992 sometimes, so my memories of williamsburg etc . are a little jaded .

I dont like doormen buildings.. dont you feel it like an invasion of privacy?

My first gf was a girl who lived in Battery park and getting past the doorman was a pain in the ass, i think it even caused our breakup.

The village is an awesome place to live but definitely not cheap. I could have the same apartment in a brand new building with gym, roofdeck, etc. (i.e. alot more amenities) for a couple hundred bucks cheaper but would have to live on like 10th Ave. in Chelsea.

I work in finance and order pretty much everything from Amazon so given my hours either need a doorman or a live-in super who takes packages.

I like the doorman, helps out with a few things and such, but my building is a bunch of old jewish hippies anyway. Not sure I would like a stuffy upper east side doorman building the same, but at mine I am pretty sure most of the marijuana I smell comes from the old people. I tip them well at Christmas and don't bother them much and they do the same for me.

brooklyn is both much less cool and more cool than you remember it I love this place with all my heart which i doubt many people can now say about manhattan. lower manhattan will always be cool but it's quickly being usurped by brooklyn (and LIC!!!) and we're happy to be doing our own thing. williamsburg is a caricature of itself at this point, though.

UWS/UES and Hells Kitchen, One bedrooms exist everywhere for 1850 - 2500. One method to go around a broker, try to sneak into a building you like and somewhere in the vestibule there will be a notice of who owns that building (if its a brownstone--if its a doorman just ask them who owns the building) and then do some research call them, and more times than not that company has an office and you can either go in, leave your ID and they will give you keys or they have a Property Manager who will show you all their vacant apartments.

Look into Stuyvesant, I had a true 3 BR for 3k. Stuytown has parks, is close to the L, and right at the top of the east village. It was the last place we looked at after looking all over LES/EV/UES and turned out to be the best thing possible.

Unless you have a family or are just out of college I would avoid living in Hoboken unless you can find rent for significantly cheaper.

FiDi is also a great place to look if you just want to be in Manhattan. The night life sucks but you can get into a nice building w/ amenities for cheaper than most other neighborhoods.

Also, don't pay a broker, you don't need one and they are overpriced and provide no value. You need to do more research yourself this way, but it isn't hard. Manhattan rentals move quick, you'll likely end up in a place that only was listed in the last month (or sooner) so you need to stay on top of all the sites.

For those of you in the east village apparently 2p2's very own Commodus is filming a movie on 10th street, 2nd avenue. I just walked passed all the cameras and trailers

The Untitled James Gray Project, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard, is filming around 9th/10th St and 2nd Ave, NYC. (Thanks @yolandaliu, George)

Need more details - it all depends on duration of stay, what you plan to be doing, etc. and, as with all things NY, the almighty budget!

If you're going to NY for a short time (under a week) and are plan to "see NY", then you are going to want to stay in Manhattan if you can afford to. With apologies to Brooklyn, most of what tourists/visitors want to see is in Manhattan. You won't want to spend your precious visiting time getting to/from the main attractions to some hotel in the boroughs.

I think staying next to Central Park is nice, but one of my favorite things to do in NY is run in the park. Depending on what you plan on doing, you might prefer to stay further south.

Yeah well I have not been to NY before and will be there for 7 days. I guess the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel is near Times Square which is ok, but I heard Tribeca is a bit of a hole...

I hate Times Square. It's kind of cool to walk through once, but there's nothing really interesting to do there, IMO. That's a matter of taste, though, so by all means stay there if you think it's what you're after.

One benefit of staying near the park is that there's a concentration of great museums on the east side. Is that the kind of thing that you'll want to do? Or are you more interested in dining? Or landmarks?

Theres so much to do in ny it definitely helps to be specific in terms of things you like to eat, to do, etc. I haven't really looked in to the hotel you mentioned, but the location (near times square) seems ok. A place like TriBeCa is great to live in but can probably be avoided on a trip here.

Being near times square or midtown west in general is good for subway line options. If you're looking for a more 'hip' hotel you can look into the standard or the ace. Times square is very touristy in general and not representative of life here (also avoid eating meals in this area apart from maybe breakfast or a snack).

Museums - moma, the met, natural history museum are the big 3. The new museum and the Whitney can be considered too if you're into modern art.

Architecture/public places - central park, times square, empire state bldg, rock center, the high line, Washington square park, Madison square park, tons more stuff in those general vicinities. Pretty much any tourist guide will point all of this stuff out. Brooklyn bridge walk is good too

Food - very subjective, but you can maybe start by browsing ny.eater.com and looking for the hot or essential restaurant lists. Also check out nymag.com or the times for their reviews and narrow down by budget/cuisine. If you can be more specific I can name things in the areas or cuisines yu like

Hope this helps

Btw just checked the Helmsley park lane - its on central park south so you're fine. Might be a little "fancy" but it will be very nice

Im looking to set up something last minute for my birthday (Saturday). Would like something along the lines of Public House or Solas (tried calling there but theyre booked). Gona be mostly 23-26yo with me and would like a mix of house/top40 music or at least top40 that would appeal to everyone. Not looking to get bottles or anything like that. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Been forever since I have been but B-Bar can be decent.

Are you looking for a big group or just a few people? Know several good places for groups of like 6-8 guys or less but not as many good bigger places.
