yes. i think it's done through zogsports, or if not, zogsports has something similar in the same area.

i played on a fairly informal coed team with some people i sort of knew, and it was fun.

Chelsea Piers runs their own leagues & I only suggested since he lives a few blocks away. Zog is everywhere, with a lot of the games up in Riverbank State Park (145th st) and on the Upper East Side/Roosevelt/Randall's Island.

100%

Played dodgeball with them 2 seasons in a row, great way to meet people (both times had 6 friends + 6 randoms).. might be joining augusts kickball league.

they pick a bar near all the games and most of the teams go back and drink/play beer pong/flip cup /relive their college lives

2p2 kickball/dodgeball team?

that's weird, i played in a league that i could swear was zog but was always in the same spot. maybe it wasn't.

i did the zog football and getting to randall's island, riverside etc was a massive pain in the dick. never again.

Anyone know of a good place to learn french?

I did it for 2 years like 5 years ago but effectively i'm starting from scratch. I live in the east village so somewhere around here (NYU?!) would be great

edit: i'd probably prefer some sort of group class, socialisation ftw

Thinking about a NY trip in Nov and want to watch some NFL.

Will it be hard to get (reasonably priced) tickets for the Giants-Cowboys game and/or the Jets-Bengals (thanksgiving day)? I'm assuming I can get for the rest of the games relatively easily.

Edit: (slightly offtopic) What about the Patriots-Colts game? Impossible?

You can scalp tix to almost any game. How many people you're with and where you'd like your seats to be located would dictate if this is a viable option.

We're three people and don't have huge preferences for good seating. One plays some poker, but the other doesn't, so the money-aspect will also have something to say. If we're talking around 80 bucks, would it be possible?

We would probably also like to have the tickets secured beforehand (ticketmaster or something like that).

My friend & I got Cowboy-Giant tickets in the parking lot last year for $20 each, but they were upstairs in one of the last rows (40 yard line). You could also try Stubhub if tix are already gone.

No clue how a Thanksgiving game would play out

Edit: 3 tix together might be difficult from a scalper, they tend to deal more in singles & pairs.

hey,

i am looking for a luxury hotel with a private terrace for a weekend trip to NYC in November. it doesn't have to be a huge terrace but ideally it's got a decent view. i'll be going to some games at MSG so something that is somewhat convenient (ie not in tribeca or something) to that location is ideal.

i don't want to spend more than $1000-$1500/night if i can avoid it, tks.

edit: obviously the cheaper the better but i am pretty sure hotels in manhattan that have a private terrace are not cheap.

I once booked a room here about a year ago:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html

I think the price was around $278 inc taxes...all the rooms are suites from my knowledge. I got upgraded to one w/ private terrace (not a terrific view but very spacious). It's not a very fancy or upscale/modern...all amenities are basic and it's a good bang for your buck. You'll have to walk 3 or 4 big blocks to get to MSG (a nice 25 minute stroll) or $8 cab ride.

plastic. . .

60 thompson rooms believe have a terrace - also has a private rooftop bar which will probably be closed in november. it's near sixth ave so goes straight up to MSG.

ace hotel -- never been there but hear good things and it's very close to MSG.

crosby hotel - another newly opened hotel in soho. friend just went, liked it.

gansvoort - total scene but smack dap in the meatpacking and huge weekend clubbing scene. also right by eight ave and that'll take you right up to MSG. rooftop bar.

mandarin is uptown and i hear it's pretty nice.

standard - maybe if you're a guest you can get into hte boom boom room? also on the west side so easy to get to MSG. no terrace but floor to ceiling windows and views of the entire city.

and please don't stay in a hotel in murray hill like the above poster put up. murray hill is basically an extension of the frat life in nyc.

second that mandarin is really nice.

standard and gansvoort are both in great location to go out and will treat you well. tons to do in that area + great brunch in the morning. standard is bit more secluded/less clubby (boomboom room and beer gardens are at your doorstep)

waldorf and ritz carlton are both very nice/high end.

chatwal is in times square area. a nice hotel, but mediocre location.
although i was at someone's suit there and they had a private terrace so fairly sure you can get one upon request.

Taking a little family vacation to NYC in October. Going to be me, my brother and my mom. Any suggestions on hotels? Both general location/neighborhood wise or specific hotels.

Looking to spend less then $300 a night which from my limited searching seems like its going to be tough to do anywhere decent.

We will be doing all the normal tourist crap if that helps with a location.

Thanks much.

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on my first trip to NYC. My girlfriend and I are there from the 27th to the 1st. I am not really a big spender but I also don't have a set budget that I have to adhere to, just trying to enjoy ourselves without spending too much.

I love food so I want to try out many restaurants in NYC. I've made a few reservations and have plans for a few restaurants already, please give me your input on what I have chosen so far.

Degustation: I have reservations for dinner, was planning on having the 10 course tasting menu.

Jean Georges Nougatine: They have a very affordable lunch prix fixe that I am trying. (my plan is to try these higher tier restaurants at lunch to make them more affordable and have the cheaper options for dinners)

Le Bernardin:To be honest I don't even usually like fish other than sushi however I want to see what the hype is about. They have a $70 prix fixe for lunch, is it worth trying? Is it very stuffy there? I made a reservation for lunch and they reminded me that jackets are required for dining. Neither of us drink wine either so we may be a bit out of place. I'm still not sure yet if we will keep this reservation or not.

Other things I have on my mind: NY Pizza somewhere (definitely...not sure where though), mexican somewhere maybe, shake shack, momofuku (noodle bar or ssam???)..maybe ippudo or another ramen shop, korean fried chicken maybe...

any suggestions?

I'm a big sushi lover so I want to try out Yasuda but I'm a little hesitant because I heard it can get very expensive. My girlfriend will not be indulging too much at yasuda like I will be (she doesn't really appreciate it that much), are there cheap options that she can dine on there? I'm thinking of cancelling Le Bernadin lunch and going for Yasuda instead.

Also some recommendations for some good places to go for dessert would be very appreciated. Either evening dessert places or late night dessert places (some of each would be nice).

We are not planning on having any Chinese because we are from Toronto where we have really amazing authentic Chinese.

I might look to try a Malaysian restaurant though...recommendations?

As for locations...we are staying at a former W Hotel (now called St. Gilles or something) near Grand Central. I hope we will be taking the subway all over, and we are also doing the usual tourist stuff so those are the areas we will be around.

I know my post was kind of all over the place but I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks

Oh yeah: besides food and the usual touristy things (I am getting this NYC pass thing from costco)....any other suggestions for visitors? is there a better way to get cheap broadway tickets other than lining up? Any other shows recommended besides broadway?

check craigslist for apartment rentals for the days you'll be there. a lot of people sublet their places for a week, or whatever, and they're usually nice, and you get more room for the same money.

my friends got a place on the LES for like $200 a night that slept 3 of them comfortably.

I'm heading to NYC 26-31st for Rock the Bells and am staying in Williamsburg. Any ideas about good bars/restaurants or fun stuff to do. A bunch of the people going are pretty busto so have to try and keep costs down.

szw-

I'm a pretty big sushi lover (and eat a lot of it) and was pretty disappointed w yasuda. Esp for the cost. A cheaper option that I found to be high quality was kanoyama and the best sushi I have had by far was sasabune but it is only omakase and def pricey (w/o much decor). I've heard good things about sushi seki as well but haven't been there yet.

Can you give approx prices with tax+tip per person for omakase at these places (ignore drinks).

If only omakase is offered I don't think that will fly since my girlfriend will properly want to eat some cheaper dinner option. btw how much did you spend at yasuda?

szw,

I've been to Le Bernardin 3 times, all for dinner and me and my girlfriend love the place. I've never been for lunch so I'm not sure how different the menu is. The place is not stuffy at all, very friendly, they actually provide jackets if you show up without one. They have a full bar and I've never ordered wine once in the 3 times I've been there.

freewilliamsburg.com has a pretty comprehensive listing of both bars and restaurants.

for food, if you are visiting brooklyn and don't eat at Peter Luger you might as well stay in kenosha or wherever the **** you came from. Dumont has a great burger and is really good overall. Fette Sau has great BBQ and bourbon selection, be prepared to stand in line forever and not get a seat because some hipster is nursing his pitcher of Blue Point trying to chat up some 90 pound chick that just crawled out the back of an American Apparel. but that's pretty much anywhere in W'Burg so whatever. there's also some pretty good sushi, Miyako right by the Bedford L is dependable. there's lots of other stuff.

bars... they are all hipster bars. all of them. Barcade has a ton of video games and a huge beer selection. Art Land is one of the more trashy / hole in the wall spots, The Charleston is a dump that has free pizza and bands in the basement, Bushwick Country Club has a photo booth and a "mini golf course" which is basically a bunch of gutters, tin cans and dirt in a back yard. there are two bowling alleys, both are decent, Brooklyn Bowl is bigger and has bands a lot of nights and is also expensive and more of a manhattan crowd, The Gutter is more of a hipster joint. there are lots more.
