There's one on MacDougal Street between W 3rd and Bleecker. Cannot remember the name, but it gets really great talent. Been there a ton of times and have seen many comedians who are now well-known.

You're thinking of the Comedy Cellar. It's a very small venue, but they typically get pretty big names, especially on the weekend. If I remember correctly, it was only $10 at the door and a two drink minimum. Highly recommended.

A really fun, small, casual piano bar on the Upper East Side is Brandy's. Had a great time there. http://www.brandysnyc.com/index.html

but the bestest.... I really don't consider myself a magic fan, but you MUST see Steve Cohen at the Waldorf-Astoria. Extremely small crowd/super intimate. Some of his tricks are stone-cold-nuts awesome. http://www.chambermagic.com/

I'm going to NYC with my girlfriend this coming weekend. We'll probably be getting into town around 7-7:30 on Friday night and I want to go see the Stepfathers at Upright Citizens Brigade at 9:30 because my sister used to go there all the time when she was in NYC and tells me they are awesome. So, I'm looking for somewhere good to eat that would be pretty quick, since we'll probably only have an hour or so. UCB is on the corner of 26th street and 8th ave so somewhere in that general area would be best. Any suggestions?

If you like Mexican I'm a big fan of Rocking Horse Cafe on 8th between 19 & 20. If not, there are a ton of restaurants between 17th & 23rd on 7th and 8th avenues.

I really like Gramercy Tavern, on 20th betw Park and Broadway. I'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread before.

You can't do Gramercy Tavern in an hour, and if you do, you're doing it wrong.

stinger,

breslin in the ace hotel has bar food and a funky scene. it'll be like a two minute cab ride to 20th and 8th. also try out No 7 sandwich shop, coworker of mine has a small piece of No 7 and they got written up really well in the times last week so go put some more coin into his already fat wallet.

They have the bar side with a $40 prix fix during some hours which I have heard is quite good and I assume would be a shorter meal than the main dining room.

It is a bit shorter, but still doubt it will be less than an hour.

I can attest the food is very good on the tavern menu, but the full experience is so worth it.

If you are thinking about Gyu Kaku, go to Aburiya Kinnosuke instead. Many consider this the most authentic Japanese non-sushi restaurant in the city. I would never have found this place except one of New York's best chef/restauranteurs, someone like Danny Meyer had this ranked as his top 3 asian food places in the city.

my family is coming to visit tomorrow and they are looking to do some cheapish, outdoorsy activities (walks, parks, fairs, etc). Anyone have any suggestions besides just roaming around central park or the LES? they specifically said they don't want to do any museums or broadway plays. any family-like activities that aren't those are welcome

Park Slope street fair is tomorrow, definitely one of the best in the city. Live music, outside the norm vendors, and lots of good Park Slope shops. Attracts a really big crowd.

I recently moved to Manhattan. I'm near 23rd and 11th in Chelsea. So far:
I've walked around Manhattan
Union Square
Bryant Park (movies in summer)
Times Square
A bunch of bars on 33rd ave (Murray Hill)
Shake Shop (awesome shakes)
Walked 5th ave from 70th to 30th (high end fashion and accessories)
Been to Webster hall for a live band and for partying
bunch of dive bars like Whiskey River, Hook and Ladder, Down Pour, Hairy Monks, etc

I'm looking for some other things to do for a college kid that is on the solo.
I don't really like going to bars alone, but It's not too bad if you're outgoing and can strike convos with strangers.
Any ideas?

If you are into sports, join a team or two at Chelsea Piers. If you're looking to meet people, volunteering with an organization like NY Cares might also give you lots of opportunities to meet people.

flash dancers or private eyes.

also, it's a perfect day out today. grab a book, huge iced coffee/water/drink and go hang out at the highline and get a tan.

the park would be a good choice today too.

ceegee, PM me your cell number and i'll invite you to my next home game. you're a stud player right?

Wait you can join teams at Chelsea Piers? Have you actually done this? Please tell me more, everyone I know is lazy and old.

I played soccer there for several years, ranging from informal co-ed leagues to competitive squads with former professionals from Europe (I was in over my head).

I always knew someone organizing a team, but I believe they have open squads where a bunch of randoms form a team. I know they also have basketball & hockey, I'm not sure what else.
