im trying to get a reservation for two for peter lugers sometime early next week. unfortunately they are booked for reasonable hours until june (lol bad economy wat)

1) does anyone have any connections that could get me a table there from 7-8:30pm any night monday through thursday?
2) does anyone have any other recommendations? ive been to craftsteak, porterhouse, and ruth chris and don't really want to return to any of them.

willl even pay $$ for a table at PL.

Luger reservations are still a tough get.

One decent fallback is Wolfgang's, which is run by a couple of ex-Luger waiters. Steaks are Luger-style porterhouse, and they have their own versions of Luger sides also (bacon, etc.) Not as good as the original, but still pretty good (definitely better than Ruth's Chris chain quality).

I think there are two locations, one downtown and one on Park around 30th.

Nothing better than a night of sweet, sweet romance with a belly full of porterhouse steak.

Second Wolfgang's. Major difference is ambience, but I doubt that's why you're going. Wolfgang's food is just as good, it takes credit cards, and you can do some pre-/post- Fifth Avenue/Grand Centralish strolling.

Ambiance is not unimportant but it's not why I like going to Luger's either. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of their family style presentation and decor. But their steaks are heavenly.

I might give Wolfgang's a try.

Just show up. They added a new dining room, so there always seems to be a table available...

anyone here into Szechuan food? I heard about Szechuan Gourmet in NYC. It's best to eat Hot Pot with a big group but a warning, if it's true szechuan food, it'll be very spicy

Anyone tried the a la carte option at Per Se? Is it sacrificing quality from the regular prix fixe option?

I have not been to Per Se yet (unfortunately) but if you are going to spend the money I feel you should go ahead and get the full experience through the prix fixe. I have done both options at La Bernadin and definitely think the prix fix is worth it at the super high end restaurants.

i took my gf there last summer and got the full tasting with wine pairing. a lot of money but in my opinion well worth it. the best meal i've ever had for sure. the portions were surprisingly filling even.

This exactly, one of those special meals that I would honestly say is worth the price tag. I would probably consider it the best meal I have ever eaten and would definitely go back.

If you're looking for a good sandwich in NYC, definitely check out Parisi Bakery in Nolita:

Excellent meat, very generous portions, and amazing bread. It's the best sandwich I've had in NYC and I've tried a lot of places. Very reasonably priced and quick service as well. Another plus is that it's not on the tourists' radar.

Heading to NYC with my girlfriend in mid september from melbourne (Aus). Keen to rent an apartment for 5 nights. Lots of websites, and good looking places but some seem a bit sketchy. Prob spend $160 - $200 a night. Have been looking in West Harlem as I have friends in Washington Heights. Also, being immersed in big cities for too long does my head in. Should I expect a cap in my ass at some stage or perhaps a gentle mugging? I'd like to think that this is just an irrational fear borne from watching New Jack City and Juice too many times but won't rest until I have assurance from the esteemed posters in EDF.

Also, I have a coffee business and am keen to check out the espresso scene in NY. Anyone know of some great roasters or cafes to visit? Bars too for that matter. One of the great things about Melbourne is the bar culture which exists behind unmarked doors, down non-descript alleys and lanes and I've found that often times it's only the locals and those in the know that get to enjoy the best places.

Cheers all.

mwa, if you're interested in really getting a good taste of what nyc (manhattan) is about you might want to try inching your way further down to the upper west side or one of the other areas further south. you'll still have very easy access to your friends in wash heights by subway, that area is well-served by trains.

west harlem (assuming you are looking in the 120's or 130's) is fine but there's comparably little going on there relative to places further south. however if you find it's the best bang for your buck in terms of lodging it's pretty easy to get to most of the interesting parts of manhattan from there.

if you do stay in west harlem check out dinosaur bbq (riverside & w 131st), it's been slipping a bit lately but still a good chicken-and-ribs type place with lots of good beers on tap. there are some ok bars around columbia / morningside heights if that crowd is ok with you. i work in harlem so if you want to grab a beer sometime hit me up. there's also good ethiopian, soul food, some ok sushi and vietnamese, etc.
