Supposed to be best in NYC although some prefer Yasuda. Also supposed to the only place where you drop $400+ a head easily other than Per Se.

What was the damage?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm still trying to figure it out but these gave me some great ideas.

So I just touched down in NY where I plan to spend a month or so, staying in the East Village. At this point I have two questions.

1) Any tips for cool music venues? I'm not talking about the big places so much as places that foster the local music scene where I can just swing by, see a few bands I probably haven't heard of, and hopefully a few that'll take me by surprise.

2) Poker in NY: does it exist? Would love it if I could find somewhere to play a bit of 2-5...

Cheers in advance!

michaelson, depends on what kind of music you like, but there's lots of stuff around, can you elaborate?

i know of a small game in manhattan but haven't played in it, don't really play out anymore but still get emails from time to time... PM me if you like, but i think someone else can probably put you on to a better spot than me

Cheers ham.

So is it only home games and the like in NY? I was under the impression that there were underground clubs around the place, never really knew how it worked though.

Musically, I'm not too fussed. I like a lot of different things. From what I've seen from your music posting your tastes are generally more abrasive and rocky than I usually listen to, but I'm not averse to that sort of stuff. I'm basically interested in anywhere I can go and see bands that put on good solid live shows. Indie. Hip hop. Jazz. Experimental. Whatever really, just after good small music venues with character.

there are definitely still clubs i'm just a bit out of things right now.

ohmyrockness.com is a pretty good resource for indie rock shows in NYC. there are tons of venues in brooklyn near the L train that you might like, depending on your tolerance level for hipsters... LES bars tend to have more niche acts (surf, old timey stuff, alt country) as well as more general rock. i don't go to many shows these days but some venues you could look at calendars for are glasslands, public assembly, union pool, parkside lounge, rodeo bar, cake shop, otto's shrunken head, etc... know i'm forgetting some and i make no endorsement for quality but those are some popular venues near you.

welcome to the hood. i'm close to thompson sq park.

1) most of the live music is in the LES. i've been out of the scene for a while since food has taken over my interest. i'd pick up every free newspaper in town and go through the music section: AMNY, Metro, village voice.

2) PM your info. I occassionaly host a 1/2 NLHE and PLO uncapped that plays very very very deep. more like a 5/5 game and sometimes it gets kicked up higher. no short-stacking allowed.

For Indie I also like Pianos and Mercury Lounge, both great venues to see up and coming bands.

GF texted this morning that there is a sign out on B'way btw 21st/22nd announcing the opening of In N Out Burger. If this is an April Fool's joke that's just not cool.

I actually think it would be a pretty cool place for a dinner for bachelor party as it is kinda off of the beaten path. There are some pretty good pictures of the interior on Yelp.

I love the chicken here. The atmosphere is weird, kinda like a club but its worth it for the food. Their spicy crab appetizer thing is really good.

Yeah, if you are ever there after 9 PM it basically becomes a Korean nightclub, but it has the best fried chicken I have ever had, hands down.

I see FatCat and Barcade recommended. I've been those places and love them both! Do you know of other places like this where you can combine the usual bar experience with doing stuff like playing arcade games (barcade) or playing pingpong or shuffle board (FatCat)?

Unrelated, if the Devils (yea, new jersey, I know) make it to a 7th game in their current series, how hard will it be to get tickets?

i recently went to Alta in the village. if you like tapas then this place was absolutely phenomenal. it's on 10th street between 5th avenue and 14th street. set us back about $100/person with wine. 100% worth it though. the ambiance and atmosphere is absolutely A+++. kind of expensive for a couple of nyu students but i guess that is why i play poker

http://www.yelp.com/biz/alta-new-york

obviously this is the yelp link and as you can see it got stellar reviews.

to the poster above: i am not really a fan of fat cat. the live music was bad the few times i was there, it was too crowded and hot, there was a long wait time for getting pool/ping pong and the crowd is a really eclectic mix which can be good and bad. it was almost impossible to hear myself think the last time i was there.

lastly, can anyone recommend good places for my friends and i to go out during the week? some places that still have people or whatever. we are all 21 year old nyu students. (weekend suggestions are good too because we don't seem to diversify past noho, soho and east village that much, in particular recommendations on 3rd ave would be awesome considering i have heard good things tangentially)

Single seat tickets were available for the first 2. I would try buying them now, and go on every day until the game (sometimes released day of game).

Otherwise, use Craigslist or Stubhub.

The smith for food/drinks is good (better as a date place)
The pour house, decent 'camp' music good atmosphere.. once a month they do a beer tasting which i highly recommend

both are on ~12th/3rd i think

dempseys on 6th/2nd they have trivia every wednesday from 8 and get a large crowds during the weeks.. typical irish place (if you go make sure you get coopers great australian beer)

really good place i have found during the week is on 1st/1st (actually on allen st across the road from dominoes) i have no idea what its called but they have live music every night until 12-1am and there are always people there if you walk from houston down allen street on the other side of the dominoes its like 5-6 places down you can't miss it
