Keep in mind that he also suggested a puffy black Northface jacket, so I basically assumed he was just leveling. I might be wrong though.

I'm not a big fan of the Mexican food here in NYC. I'm from CA originally and have realized that the Mexican food here is based on eastern Mexico which favors blackbeans over the western refried. I like the refried myself. Having said that Mama Mexico is fun. They also have one up on 101 and B'way or thereabouts.

If you are into Latin food I'd opt for another nationality.

If you are in your 20s I'd suggest Williamsburg. You are kinda priced out of the Villiage. Lower East Side is also a recommendation. I'd also suggest Astoria Queens.

i'm wanting to move to nyc - manhattan. anyone live there? need any help or advice for locations. some things i want:

spacious 1br, furnished property
well lit (floor ceiling windows?)
not on a hugely crowded street
parks are nice

whats the best way to go about finding something? where should i search? who should i contact? craigslist seems like a mess, maybe i'm doing something wrong.

if things are crazily overpriced i might look at Hoboken. would be ok paying 2-3k or so

Solids, thx for the Mama Mexico suggestion, I'll have to try them out. I've had Rosa Mexicana and Dos Caminos, but wasn't too impressed with either, so we'll see how Mama goes.

Ironically, greg, I'm also looking for a similar place for my sister and at the moment, I'm looking around park slope (nicer parts), near Methodist hospital.

Seems decent enough, but anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

+1, id rather go here than dos caminos and think baby bos makes the best margaritas ive had so far in the city. theres also a more 'authentic' mexican place near baby bos called el parador that has a neat vibe and is a little nicer than baby bo's i guess.

i've eaten at the mama mexico's on the UWS a few times, it's pretty good. gets really crowded with your typical columbia / UWS crowd and the mariachi band and the dudes wandering around pouring tequila into your mouth. i'd say it's pretty gringo-friendly, decent portions, not super spicy by mexican standards, good in a large group.

i have a friend from overseas coming to visit me in a few days and she'd like to go "clubbing" in NYC. i'm not much into clubs anymore, so i was wondering if anybody can suggest a good club? i met her when i lived in miami, so we went to mansion/prive/space kinda stuff from time to time but i haven't been to any clubs in NYC since i moved to the area a while ago. ideas are appreciated

Anyone frequent Wo Hop? I've probably been there hundreds of times. That and H&H Bagels. Riding a motorcycle/bike there is suicidal; I've been hit by FOUR CARS in a year.

Yeah I've been going there for many years. Its ok/somewhat good. Although Its 24hs, which defiantly moves it up a notch, and also makes up for some things about it. It's much better than Hop Kee and other surrounding restaurants.

Mama Mexico's is pretty funny. /the wandering dudes with the tequila can get a little insistent.

If you want good trash Mexican on the UWS, check out Taqueria de la Fonda on Amsterdam and like 105. Giant bricks of burrito for $9 or so.

Owner is super chill, has given us tequila shots on the house tons of times when we wander in stoned. Says he's planning a major renovation soon with room for a small live band and full bar b/c he bought out the hair salon place next door.

Hope someone can help me remember the name of a "restaurant"

More like fast food.

Was in NYC in the 90's for a weekend, most time spent around Times Square where I was staying. There was this cheap steak place where you walk in, tell them what you want, they throw it on the grill in front of you, hand you a tray with your potato or whatever and a few minutes later you have your steak, about the time you just got comfortable in your seat. Pretty quick service.

All for not much more than McDonald's. I think there may have been more than one of them in the city, not sure. Pretty much a hole in the wall, furnished like fast food, and it was cheap, I was poor and so was the girl I was with.

Maybe Tad's Steak, also known as the worst steak place in NYC: http://midtownlunch.com/2008/08/25/e...york-city-nyc/

hahah tad's. i was in midtown for a meeting once and was deterred from eating at tad's by a bum. a ****ing homeless dude saw me peering in like i was thinking about it and came barreling down the street talking about how bad their food is. think about that.

of course then he wanted five bucks to show me where to eat instead so YMMV.

Rice and Beans on 7th avenue, north of 52nd street; amazing Brazilian restaurant, and Alicia Keys use to eat there off and on.

There's a really good German restaurant down here in Brooklyn called Sweik. I go here alot, lots of german beers on tap and has a very good feeling to it. Also if you buy a main course you get a second one free.

had to look that up. that could be the place. probably remembered it as being better than that, heck its been 20 years.

also if you want steak in my town you more or less have to go to some overpriced snob factory, or settle for golden corral. i doubt i eat a steak more than once a month

I'm taking my daughter to NYC this weekend (college visit to NYU). We're going to be staying in Chelsea - any restaurant recommendations[1]? I'm thinking mostly casual but one blowout meal, shooting for Le Bernardin but other suggestions (Daniel?) welcome; as a side question, if it's dinner we would probably be eating near closing (say 10:30 or 11) - does anyone have experience whether they start to push you out after an hour, or (as one would expect for such a restaurant) do you get the full experience, no rush and no "sorry, you can't order X because the grill has been shut down"?

Sunday brunch recommendations also appreciated.

Also, is there anything specifically to know about the Chelsea area? Must-see/do? Don't-go-down-this-street? Etc?

[1]Italian is probably the top choice, especially the signature NY Italian type of place. Not on the list: Mexican, Indian, Greek/Middle Eastern

If you like Italian, then Il Molino is a natural choice, though that would probably qualify as your blowout meal:

I don't think there are any don't-go-down-this-street streets in Chelsea (unless you're a homophobe, in which case you should probably avoid the whole neighborhood).

I live in chelsea and am very into food. A newish paella restaurant called socarrat on 19th and 7th is amazing if u like paella. Just down 8th ave into the west village is my favorite restaurant in the city, Dell Anima. Its also open til 2 am, so you wont have to worry about the late nite thing. They take reservations but at that hour you will probably be fine walking in. Their tagliatelle bolognese is simply the best pasta dish ive ever had.

For the blowout meal, le bernardin is a great choice. I really like Jean Georges too for that kind of meal, or Joel Robuchon. You really cant go wrong in this arena.

Hey, I just moved to DUMBO in Brooklyn. I got a pretty sweet 2 br / 2 bath pad, but am paying an arm and a leg for it ($3300!). I moved from a town that didn't really have a community of online players or underground games. I'm just wondering if any of you established NYers want to get together to talk strat and/or have any advice on how to find these underground games. I'm a 3/6-10/20 HU and 2/4-3/6 6max player if it matters..
