I was given the book The Philosophy of Modern Song, by Bob Dylan, for Xmas. Dylan riffing on 20th Century popular music and culture. He's better at writing songs than picking them IMO.
"Any time you mention a river in America you are thinking about the Mississippi. A beautiful, wide flowing body of water that rolls down the middle of America. And everything that that conjures up. The Clash are talking about the Thames. But in America you can't help but think Mississippi. And this is what gives this particular song such broad appeal. All hell is breaking loose, but the guy is still living by the river, which gives him some type of hope, and a way to escape from any difficulty."

Was this one of the picks you didn't like? (I liked this book.)

His choice of Pump It Up by Elvis Costello pissed me off. But perhaps I'm being harsh. I'm still working my way through the book to find the real Americana...
Saw The Cars open for The Kinks at a less than half-full Springfield (MA) Civic Center in '78 - before the album broke through. Right after their set ended with this, Cathy Carabine turned & said, "Those guys are f***ing good." Cathy, rest her soul, was illustrious & intense,
Truthfully, I heard Irma Thomas for the first time a couple days ago and fell in love with her singing immediately. Then found out she did the original of Time Is On My Side.
Some singers, Alberta Hunter, Abbey Lincoln, Tom Waited, Ella, just stand out the first time you hear them. Irma did that for me.
Now, some guys they just give up livin'
And start dyin' little by little, piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
Then go racin' in the streets
