LF, get a copy of
The River. It was considered more "radio friendly" in it's day, with a host of feverish rockers and party songs, but songs like
Point Blank and the title track (amongst others) are Springsteen at his most darkly introspective, and beautifully crafted and performed by the E Street Band, to boot.
If you like acoustic stuff,
Nebraska is a bleak as it gets, the cuts all originally meant to be demos. The solitary performance, just voice, guitar, and the creaking chair and surface noise of the tape recorder, creates a downright lonesome sound that underscores the isolation and desperation of the songs.
