d-beat - absolutely start at track one and listen through
continuity with tool is essential - main reason why they get so little radio play
their tracks typically build off one another and callback to earlier riffs
they also play on a different set of beats than what's standard so it can be very offputting the first few times you hear it
i hated tool until i was at a jobsite where the manager basically played nothing but tool and system of a down every day - after a few days I become indoctrinated in the genius that is tool
there's actually a lot of really interesting academic papers written on their music as they are in the subgenre of math rock - especially lateralus - which I concur is the best one to start yourself off one
for a one off, sober is probably the closest thing they have when it comes to having a single

I remember Sober and AEnima as songs
Lateralus was brilliant. I fell asleep to it, which is a good thing. If I don't like music, it annoys me too much to sleep. Thanks, Dominic!
Say what you want about Britney, but tricking public daytime radio into playing a song about how "all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to **** me" is pretty sweet.
Decided to give Tool another try after reading comments ITT. Decided on Lateralus, and made it through 1:40 of The Grudge--a personal best. I'm sure they're fine musicians. They seemed to take their music and themselves very seriously.

Well said. They have good stuff, but I definitely have this picture of them.

100%, in pure seriousness, they have publicly stated a large part of the reason behind the 15 year gap or so is that they were so full of doubt of not being able to create something good enough.
Phatmack, you'd enjoy the pitchfork review of the album, perhaps you wrote it , the author focuses more on Maynard's obsession with his vineyard (which is actually producing legit top wines) than the album itself
This is a great review. Tool is obviously more than the frat band I've always taken them for, and it would seem impossible for me not to like a band that wallows in polyrhythms and prurience--but now I have a better sense of why I don't.
