30 years ago this week, one of the great underdog albums was released: Bonnie Rait's Nick of Time. It was maybe the last chance for Raitt and producer Don Was to make something decent with a record company...it went on to sweep the Grammys, including Album of the Year.

Great article on the making of it.

It just had that late 80s roots rock feel to it that was genuine, you know? Great, great album, and one of the very best singers who has ever lived.

It embeds fine, but you should only put the video identifcation-part of the address in the tags (in this case bo_efYhYU2A) :

A timeless classic from a really great country singer (and a damn good guitar player):

The above Jerry Reed song is from 1971; this one, by Tony Joe White, is from 1969. I remember both hits well.

Poke salad. As in "pig in a poke". Poisonous, btw, unless you pre=boil the poke salad and discard the water

More information and interesting read on Poke Sallet:

Poke-Sallet-Poke-Salad-Recipe-How-to-Handle-Harvest-and-Prepare-the-Poisonous-Pokeweed

From above link:

The cooked version of this weed is properly referred to as "poke sallet," but like with so many traditions that have survived via word of mouth, the pronunciation can often be found altered, most commonly to "poke salad." You might also see it spelled "polk salad" or "polk sallet." The "polk" spelling was popularized by a 1968 country/pop song by Tony Joe White call Polk Salad Annie.

Cyberpunk is an amazing album. While not Idols best it certainly deserved a lot better than the reception and reputation it got/has.

It took me a long time to realize just how good it was - like most others, even as a big Idol-fan, I initially dismissed it as a weird experiment that was mostly about Idol being fascinated by cyber-culture and forcing a rather shallow and weird album based on that, but revisiting it some years later, I found it to grow a lot on me. Now, many years after that again, it still ranks as one of the best Idol albums for me.

“Last Christmas somebody gave me a whole Jimson weed – the root must have weighed two pounds; enough for a year – but I ate the whole goddamn thing in about twenty minutes.” The slightest hesitation made me want to grab him by the throat and force him to talk faster. “Right!” I said eagerly. “Jimson weed! What happened?”

“Luckily, I vomited most of it right back up,” he said. “But even so, I went blind for three days. Christ I couldn’t even walk! My whole body turned to wax. I was such a mess that they had to haul me back to the ranch house in a wheelbarrow… they said I was trying to talk, but I sounded like a raccoon.”
