They're currently on tour with STP and Bush. I went to see STP & Bush and had never really listened to The Cult because tbh they're a bit before my time, but I left the show thinking about how awesome The Cult was. Those guys rock pretty hard.

I wrote this a few years ago when I saw them in Vegas:

The Pearl at the Palms is about the best place for a concert I've ever been to. It's small, intimate and the sound is great.

Skipped the opening act (Black Ryder???) and got good and sloshed beforehand. My friend and I got our seats - they had a general audience standing only section in front, and then the mezzanine a little above that. That's where we were - about 30 yards from the stage, a little left of center. Great seats.

There was only about 900 people in the audience, as the theater was only 3/4s full. WTF?? It's THE CULT!

Anyway, the Cult walked onto the stage with little fanfare to audience cheers and launched into The Rain and The Phoenix from the album Love. Billy Duffy's guitar was clean and pure and sounds like a shot through the sternum. Jingly-jangly awesomeness. Like if AC/DC and The Byrds had a bastard love-child.

The show was basically a greatest hits selection, with the band playing Lil Devil, Sweet Soul Sister, Fire Woman, New York City, Cermony, If, Sun King and Indian. They closed with She Sells Sanctuary, of course....and then came back to play Dirty Little Rock Star and Love Removal Machine.

they also played two new songs off of their upcoming album, Capsule One. They sounded great and actually harkened back to Dreamtime Cult. They played for about 90 minutes...it was too short but damn good.

The rest of the band - John Tempesta (Drums), Mike Dimkich (rhythm guitar), Chris Wyse (bass) were all excellent. The stars are Ian Asbury and Duffy, of course. Asbury still acts like the total rock star, dressed all in black with a foxtail handing off his ass, never taking off his dark glasses. He'd wander to the drum kit and down a drink before wandering back to the mic stand a belting out his lyrics.

Asbury's voice is still good, although he tends to shout a lot of the words instead of actually singing. And he loves to pontificate between songs.

Duffy just stood off to one side and jammed. Why he doesn't get his due as one of the premier rock guitarists of all time I'll never know. But damn, he's awesome. The Cult is one of those bands that has a signature sound that is instantly recognizable. The comparison to AC/DC is a solid one - both bands play straight ahead rock and roll that is both simple and melodic. And they both rock out like crazy.

My friend agreed to go with me because she just loves concerts....she had heard a couple of Cult songs before and went on Youtube to see some of their stuff before we went to the show. She thought it'd be "fun but a little corny." She was amazed at how fantastic and tight the band was. We went to the Tool concert together last month and she compared it to that, as one of the "best concerts ever." She couldn't believe how hard they rocked....and it wasn't corny at all.

All through the show I was standing and throwing the devil horns and dancing like an idiot. I had a huge grin plastered across my face the whole time. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. No pyro, no frills, just straight ahead rock and roll.

If you get a chance to see The Cult, don't miss it.

One of the joys of getting old is seeing youngsters rediscover the music you were into:
