Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Seems to me that anything that was on heavy rotation on MTV and VH1 should count as a music video?

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Round 8:

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

Not every music video has to be a special effects extravaganza or with a million quick cuts. This video is the perfect representation of the song - and that's what a music video is for, right? In the video, watching Natalie sing straight at the camera while everyone on the video crew works behind her, and while she tries to have some kind of connection with the actor playing her lover, the lyrics are given perfect, metaphorical representation. And I love the exuberant dance at the end, as if she's not going let all the artifice stop her from expressing something heartfelt.

Plus, I just love looking at her impossible beautiful face.

******

My Picks:

Johnny Cash - Hurt
NIN - Closer
George Michael - Freedom '90
Beyonce with Jay-Z - Crazy In Love
Blur - Song 2
Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls
Marilyn Manson - Long Dark Road Out Of Hell
Natalie Imbruglia - Torn

Hey, if you want it, take it. I was just pretty clear that movie promo videos didn't count. It's not the full representation of the art form - just a bunch of movie clips intercut with the artist singing.

But if you see something in it, so be it.

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Round, The Ocho

Now for something that's not emo, not creepy or strange (subjectively speaking), not a movie promo (wtf would I want to promote Purple Rain?), is from the last 15 years, and guess what? Poker content!

in 2009 there used to be a poker dealer in The People's Republic of Texas who had a thing for Miley Cyrus and for this video. And what's more, he was alt-right before I had ever heard of the term. I confess I don't follow Miley. I have a vague idea who she is and don't have any problem with her.

Anyway, the dealer moved to the bright lights of Vegas to seek his fortune and I wonder what he thinks of Miley now.

This video has everything. Girls in cutoff jeans and cowboy boots. Cameros and Trans-Ams. And pickup trucks! And Old Glory!!! What could go wrong? Well, I think I see the seeds of mischief -- for example, there's entirely too much diversity in the dance crew. That should have been a hint of trouble...

Anyway, some red-blooded 'Murican has to post a country Video, and that person is me.

So Far

1. Golden Earing - The Twilight Zone
2. The Stripes - Zatoichi
3. Not Morris Day, but Kyary Pamyu Pamyu wit Tempura Kidz
4. Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
5. Bad Sister (Rock version) - Wang Rong
6. Jolin Tsai - My Fave Videoteer, but I don't know the name of this one.
7. Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her - No Star
8. Miley Cyrus - Party in the USA

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

I've been having fun writing these up, personalizing the music and the videos, so it's nice to see Phat Mack's write up--even if that song kinda sucks. But that's my problem--country, metal, most punk I just can't handle. And I don't mean to judge those who do like these.

Anyway, my former assistant keeps urging me to date one woman or another. Why? Who knows. Women can't stand to see single men? She loves me and wants to see me happy? That's close to the truth. But I've been in two relationships in the last thirty-five years, and those two have taken up most of those thirty-five years. Quite frankly, I'm scared to death to get involved in another intimate relationship. Still . . . .

And maybe that's why I love this cover version of a pretty well known song. The singer filmed herself with the sun setting behind her, using a couple lens settings. She brings feeling to this the original lacks and makes the desire to understand love a question of knowledge and knowing. I love this version.

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

I have only seen her first 2 videos (which are both pretty good) and this one. I'm also a huge fan because of how dark a lot of her music is, while being incredible well sang and played. And I also kinda dig that she's perhaps a bit bat****!! But in this video, there is the side of fun. I needed that kind of thing from her. And if you don't like Zach... jump off a ****ing bridge!!

Round 8

Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco

I love the Great American Songbook and always enjoy it when newer artists resurrect some of those great songs. Not that Taco is a newer artist anymore but they were in the mid 80's when this Irving Berlin classic was already more than 50 years old. They actually made a pretty big hit out of it and it was very popular on the time and got lots of MTV play.

Spoiler:

so far:
Paperback Writer - The Beatles
The Making of Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Singin' in the Rain - Gene Kelly
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood
Simply Irresistible - Robert Palmer
Whip It - Devo
Too Drunk to Karaoke - Jimmy Buffett/Toby Keith
Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

xander biscuits - Pick 8 - U2 - Sweetest Thing

Greatest song? No
Greatest U2 song? No
Greatest video? Seemingly no

But if you dig a little deeper you find out that Bono forgot his wife's birthday and so this video was his way of trying to make it up to her. It's his wife that you see at the start in fact.

It's just really quirky that he'd make forgetting his wife's birthday so public and drag the rest of the world into his affairs. I guess that's what makes Bono Bono.

Anyway, Perhaps not "Greatest" but definitely notable which I think is worth bringing to everyone's attention in case you didn't already know.

For my money none of them do In fact most of the videos that try too hard I find totally unwatchable/unlistenable to. The seizure inducing videos do nothing at all for me. This was a nice song/video combo for my tastes.

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Pick #8:

Breeders - Cannonball

Co-directed by Kim Deal and an undiscovered Spike Jonze, I think this is one of the best embodiments of 90's alternative garage rock. Great sound and a fun, unpretentious vibe. Whatever happened to this band, anyway?

Walk This Way (Run DMC / Aerosmith)
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Don't Come Around Here No More
Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg)
Sober (Tool)
Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal
Mastodon - High Road
B-Real, Coolio, Method Man, LL Cool J And Busta Rhymes - Hit Em High
Breeders - Cannonball

And Fiona Apple is always great. I remember playing that Taco version of Ritz as a DJ. Very popular

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

xander biscuits - Pick 9 - MGMT - Kids

So this one got a little controversial when it was released. The kid looks genuinely terrified of all the monsters and with good reason to be. But there is behind the scenes footage on YouTube that show the kid playing with all the puppets and laughing and seemingly having a good time. I'm not completely sold that it's not child abuse to some small degree but I'm a lot more comfortable with it after seeing the behind the scenes footage.

Anyway, I'm not picking it because of the controversy; I'm picking it because artistically I think it's a really great video. It goes really well with the song and it's kinda mesmerising.

Enjoy if you've not seen it before...

Round 9

I've Got a Crush on You - Linda Ronstadt

Did I mention great American songbook? Yeah, I believe I did! 3 of my absolute favorite ever music albums were the 3 Linda Ronstadt did with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. I just love the way that she captures those songs. I was hoping to post this one after I took her in the voice draft but alas I waited too long and she got sniped.

This isn't a flashy video at all but that's okay because I don't really like flashy videos. It does however do a good job of conveying the mood and atmosphere. Like I said earlier I am not a video music guy and am 99% about the music and love the music here.

so far:

Paperback Writer - The Beatles
The Making of Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
Singin' in the Rain - Gene Kelly
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood
Simply Irresistible - Robert Palmer
Whip It - Devo
Too Drunk to Karaoke - Jimmy Buffett/Toby Keith
Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Round 8 pick is a classic that I'm surprised hasn't already been taken. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit pretty much marks the point where alternative rock/grunge became mainstream. Most people (including myself) had never heard anything quite like it before and needless to say it paved the way for the huge grunge/Seattle scene that followed.

The video is definitely not polished but the punk pep-rally vibe perfectly captures the attitude of the band and the song, and was a perfect antidote to the pop music that dominated the radio and MTV back in the early 1990s.

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Pick #9 is this clip by The Thermals just because they are a cool band and the video is fun. It is based on the story of Lot's wife from the bible - a lot of their music mocks religion or at least the hypocrisy of faux-Christians in the US.

Picks:
Smashing Pumpkins -1979
Madness - One Step Beyond
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Metallica - Unforgiven
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight tonight
Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Thermals - Pillar of Salt

Regarding Hit Em Up. That song still stands up today and doesn't sound too tropy after all these years.

Recently, I was watching some of Busta as he is today. It's crazy to see how different he is now. He can't even do what he did in his younger years. It's like watching two different people.

Re: ***MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT***

Xander, I had the displeasure of casting a child for some indy film back in my 20s. I've also had to work with kids on movies sets. I (and many others) think that that using children is in movies is child abuse. It's truly no wonder why these kids grow up completely ****ed up, and the disdain for child actors shows when you see a 30-year-olds playing high school students in movies.

Regardless, these kids are impressive actors for any age person, and I think that the children's lack of inhibition makes them more convincing. Plus they go to acting school more than they go to regular school.

It's difficult topic that I know a lot of people in the 'biz struggle with, so there are tons of rules and regulations about the hours they can work, how money is put in escrow, and so on. Scaring the **** out of a kid would be an absolute no-no. Heads would roll and many people would be banned from working ever again.
