Okay, guys, here we go!

After doing a random.org list, here is the draft order:

revots33
xander biscuits
mrbaseball
DC11GTR
John Cole
Phat Mack
Dominic
herbdizzle
Cranberry tea
Schlitz mmmm

We'll do 6 rounds, and if people want to go longer, we can. Standard reverse snake in da house.

Here is the spreadsheet link

Rules:
  • No long-form videos. One song only, unless they are two songs that often "go" together. (ex: We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions)
  • No performance-only clips. Meaning, no live performances that are of one song. "Performance" music videos are fine.
  • No live performances on a talk show or other TV show (SNL, Letterman, etc.)
  • No "montage", Youtube-like clips of a song made by a 14 year-old in Peoria.
  • No music video that is a movie promo

Please PM the next person after you once you make a pick.
Please fill out the spreadsheet with your picks.
4 hour pick window. If you miss it, you are skipped but can make up your picks at any time.

revots on the clock!

So I guess it's on me now

If this was deeper than 6 rounds then I might pick more strategically to block what other people would pick, but since it's 6 rounds I'm just going to draft my favourite videos.

xander biscuits - Pick 1 - OK Go - Upside Down & Inside Out

ok song, but a top notch video.
I won't spoil it, just watch it...

That's a really good video. It looks like it must have taken a long time to get all of that choreographed.

I never saw that one before (and agree, not a very good song).

Being basically ignorant of this genre I am just going to pick bands, songs, artists that I personally like. What could be better than a pre music video revolution video than the Beatles lip syncing?

The Beatles - Paperback Writer

meh 2nd pick. Beatles had so many more interesting music videos to choose from.

Don't forget to PM the next guy and fill in the spreadsheet!

OK gonna go with this one because it's a great song and the video captures teenage suburban ennui/nostalgia perfectly:

I want to make clear what I mean by "no live performance" video. Like anything from an actual concert or performance (Unplugged) that is live.

You can choose videos that are "performance," as long as they are videos (think Def Leppard or AC/DC). Fake performing in the videos is fine.

Also, I'm going to say that old, lip-synced "performances" are not eligible, either. So, Tom Jones on Sonny and Cher, or something, is a no. They performing "live,", even if it's lip-synced.

If you're confused, just PM me and I will yay or nay you.

don't forget to PM the next guy and update the spreadsheet

And, you know . maybe SAY SOMETHING about why you're choosing the video?

What is it that makes a good video? How does the video mesh with the song? Etc.

No commentary, except note that this is done in one shot. That Kanye guy who appears at the beginning and end may have a future.

Disclaimer, there is no YouTube video of this, but here is the link:

Since DLR is off limits, I'm going with the best guitarist he ever played with (yes I went there). Its not particularly a great video, but it was perfect for its time for me. I was about a year and change into playing guitar and this album was my first guitar book and the first album I tried to study from front to back. Though I'm partial to "For The Love Of God...", and almost picked that video for this, it had to be this one. Why? Because I was the spitting image of the goddamn kid in this video. I was short, had hair down to my middle back and could play my ass off. Eventually, I learned most of the album, minus a few crazy licks here and there, but did Steve Vai ever hire me?

Yes, actually he did. But not as a guitar player. I did get a chance to restring and play every guitar he had in his studio (about 75), including the guitar in "For The Love Of God..." and I think that if I didn't look so much like the kid (even in my early 20s), he might've given me a "musical shot" of some sort. His memories of working with that kid and band were one of those "Faye Dunaway would walk out of interview if you mention Mommie Dearest" kinda things.

Even watching the video just now for this, I had a raging nostalgia. That album and the new couple of years were the best development for my guitar playing. Kinda makes me miss it....

There's a scene in the film Boogie Nights where Marky Mark asks Burt if he can make a movie with a plot. Burt says, Sure, why not?

As far as I know, this is the first music video with a plot -- where the song is acted out. Also note the professional dancers, perhaps another first. This was also the first to grab my attention.

Will PM Dom.

Really cool video, and, just to brag a little, at a PLO game last week I learned how that Kanye guy pronounces his name.
