Sounds like a standard oven in argie apts but you're failing a little with it. Those ones are a pain in the hole to be fair though. I would look into moving apartment over something that could potentially tilt me daily.

Are you keeping the button pressed for the first 30 seconds or so? That's the key, some ovens will need even more time for their thermostat to be hot enough, if the thermostat is cold the security valve will stop gas flow.

I haven't counted how many seconds I've held it but I'm sure it was at least 30. Also from trial and error I've discovered that it's easy to light when it's at room temperature however it starts to become impossible very quickly as the temperature rises just a little bit - so if I keep it lit for 30 seconds, release the button, and it shuts off, then I can't relight it right away (although that was when I only had a lighter available - now I have matches that I can drop in which may work better). And like I said earlier, the first time I lit it I had no problems at all until I opened the door to put the food in, then it went out and I had to wait for it to cool off completely before I could get the gas to light again.

My maid was looking at it today and she just gave up on it and said she'd tell the owner.

Well, for anyone who cares for a further update - the owner came over today and she quickly concluded that the thing just doesn't work. I'm the first person to rent this apartment so they replaced a lot of stuff in it before I moved in, including the oven. Apparently it worked fine when they tested it and now it doesn't. She's having someone else come look at it tomorrow and in the meantime she brought me a toaster oven to use.

there are a lot of real estates in the city that rents unfurnished appartment much more cheaper,thing is that 99% of the time you need to have a propiety guaranty,it can be from your mother or whatever,but i think the porpiety must be here,im not sure

Here's a basic fact about Argentines: they don't move. Ever.* So if you don't want to pay gringo prices, you need to get unfurnished housing. Which as Fripp said, requires a guarantor.

This is true. Moving is a pain in the ass imo. I'm 23 and have lived in just 3 different places in my lifetime (not counting the 3 years I lived in the US).

Yeah the guarantee thing sucks, gringos get screwed. Correct me if I'm wrong but they also make you sign a long lease with it, like 2 years. I can't imagine what I would do if they started doing construction next to me 2 months into a 2 year lease. I have already had to move from 2 apartments because the neighbors decided to start major renovation projects.

the 2 year lease is to protect you, the owner can't kick you out during that time, that's the purpose. If you leave during the first year you loose your deposit in most cases.

BTW I'm leaving an appt. that I own in Vicente Lopez, super nice area. A friend of mine might want it, so he is first in line at the moment. If someone is interested PM me. I'm renting it unfurnished at local price.

They can kick you out if you break the contract, huge parties are usually not allowed by contracts. But if they need to sell the property, or want it back for whatever reason, they have to wait until the 2 year contract expires.

I have already moved within Vicente Lopez, renting with my GF at the moment. As for seeing stuff, I'm not sure... the neighborhood is quite pretty by itself (specially during spring/summer). Hit me a PM and we can have lunch and I'll give you a little tour.

Vicente Lopez and San Isidro have the expensive restaurants outside of Palermo/San Telmo/Recoleta/Centro/Belgrano.

Other than that, there's the riverside in Vicente Lopez which can be a very pleasant way to pass the day. There are some windsurfing and kitesurfing places around Martinez.

Like River said, by law you can leave after 6 months but the owner can't kick you out for 2 years. Of course, you generally pay the 5% monthly realtor's fee in the beginning of the contract for all 2 years, and you'll also lose the security deposit.

I'll vouch for Luis if anyone is interested. He went out of his way to help me multiple times a few years ago with no gain for himself. If anyone is looking for a place I'd check him out.

His apartment is a great spot, imo one of the absolute best places to live (and that would impress any girl). A couple blocks from the Rosedal and the US Embassy. Are you renting it furnished, Luis?
