Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

LC, this is from a Citi account that you have established here in Argentina, right? Not a US Citi account?

I was at my bank last week and although we never talked about withdrawals from the bank account they did say there was a monthly 5k U$D limit per month on receiving transfers. He led me to believe that more was possible but other bureaucracy had to be passed. Maybe for some weird reason 5k going any one way is the limit? Regardless, I don't know how well they deal with banking issues but if you need legal help concerning this, I'll be happy to put you in contact with some friends of mine.

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

I withdraw with my neteller card at a citi atm in vicente lopez, and I allways get that warning.
I also have an account at HSBC (local) and told them that I wanted to receive a swift transfer from moneybookers, they asked me about the origin of the money and when I said it was online poker they told me they couldn't do it because of this BCRA resolutions about money laundering and such. Didn't bother to read them but I'm pretty sure that brining money to the country that you can't justify is somehow illegal.

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

Hey guys.... I have my DNI de Extranjero finally and an old expired argentine passport I was thinking of renewing just to have it. Is it worth renewing it?

I've been emailing addresschange at neteller to try and get my old neteller account reopened but no luck, I got an email saying that my document wasn't up to standards or something. I called and they just say to email them again and that they will write a note on my account for review or something.

Thats all I need to use neteller right? Or does US citizenship prohibit you from using neteller?

I want to play on Euro sites so I wan thinking about opening a local bank account and wiring the site the money? Kind of worried about the AFIP bothering me down the line though.

Anyone have any info for me.....?

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

I'm leaving on the 24th and I want to sell my bed

Its a Simmons beauty rest, bought about 10 months ago for 6500 pesos. Its in good condition, comes with 5 year normal use warranty. Definitely the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in

I'll take any reasonable offer

Also have 2 Dell 24" for sale in good condition, $300 each or $550 for both

Also have good office chair for sale, 700 pesos or $ equivalent

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

Also want to sell my Blackberry, its a Blackberry Bold 9000, bought about 10 months ago for 2000 Pesos. Its under a contract that a friend of mine signed up - anyone wanting to buy it will basically have to pay the bill every month at a rapipago/pagofacil - it comes out to about 120 pesos/month without a HUGE amount of... calls/texts, if you use it more it will be more obviously. You get a text every month from personal telling you how much the bill is.

If anybody is interested in this, make me an offer

// I'm actually leaving the 29th now.

The chair and bed are still available

I actually dont remember, I *think* its unlimited, I've never had a problem with it, but I've only used it for web searches on the move and email. Its certainly effectively unlimited if you aren't downloading a ton of stuff

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

I really want to try mate, but I'm intimidated by the special cup and straw

Does anyone have any recommendations for particular brands? Stores where I should buy/try mate?

Also, how do I drink it? Is it as simple as dumping a spoonful into the cup and adding hot water?

Thanks

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

yeah, buy a cheap gourd (equipo) and straw (bombilla). if you buy your equipo in BsAs, I think there's almost no chance that you buy a gourd that you need to cure.

yeah, after that it's pretty much as easy as buying yerba (the tea leaves) and dumping it in the gourd, usually filling about 3/4. add sugar if you like (most people do) or without. obviously, you'll need a thermos to keep your boiling water if you're going to the park. keep reloading water after you drink until there are no more bubbles.

as for yerba, there are a million brands, they are all fairly similar, unless you buy one that has additives. you can buy orange, sweetened, lemon, coffee, guarana, etc etc. there's also some premium yerbas which generally have a more Fat Tire-esque roasted flavor.

i'd invite you to my house but i live a bit outside capital these days. although the provinicia is a way more authentic Buenos Aires experience, imho.

any gringo should have the 'let's go drink mate in the park' or 'can you teach me how to drink mate' in his repertoire for meeting girls.

what lozcolbert says but also find your way into pretty much any social situation where mate is a possibilty with actual argentinians and you will probably get offered some. people tend to drink it socially, passing the equipa round.

This might be the best advice in the whole thread unless someone said already something like "Don't go into Fuerte Apache after 8 pm".

We call it "mate". The word is used for both the drink itself and the special cup where we drink it from.

you don't want to see Carlitos' old home?

there's actually a colectivo route that you can take through Fuerte Apache if you want to get a safe view of what it's like. edit: still wouldn't do it after 8pm though, por las dudas.

Drinking mate has exactly the same social rules as smoking weed:

- Take a hit and pass round
- Don't **** with the construction / arrangement (no stiring the bombilla around)
- Keep going until it runs out

Plus:
- Only the original maker of the mate is meant to add more water
- Saying 'thank you' when it's passed to you means you don't want any more

Any suggestions for booking trips to Iguazu and Patagonia? Should I just do it myself, or should I check out some of the travel agencies in Buenos Aires?

Re: Moving to Buenos Aires discussion

Just go online and buy my plane tickets and hotels separately. Or try going through an agency to see if they have packaged deals.

I really don't know what I was asking. I was just hoping to get some advice from people who have visited these places in the past

At Iguazu stay at the Argentine side. It's cheaper and the Argentine side of the park is 10x better than the brazilean.
