I'm not really. Not many people are around for the winter, plus enough people bitched whenever we switched restaurants that it just didn't seem worth it to me. I still try new restaurants pretty regularly, I just haven't felt like announcing it here.

Also, I guess after being here awhile I have a life here now. So meeting people who are only going to be here 2 months and ask me questions about BA just don't have the same appeal that it used to...

I used to live there. Very busy area near microcentro. Is near a lot of conveniences. Decent selection of restaurants, though lacking the diversity and creativity of Palermo. Good bar/cafe options, especially for an expat. Great shopping, I guess. Great transportation options. I would recommend living here a bit as it is a good, safe base to decide what barrio best suits you for the future.

I'm affiliated with this site but I feel it's extremely relevant to this thread:

I live in Buenos Aires playing poker and also help run LandingPadBA.com.

It's an English-language site full of information to do with Buenos Aires but we try to keep things light-hearted and funny.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. A few years ago I too was a poker playing arriving in BA with no clue and would definitely have loved a resource like this.

Cheers!

lol @ Spanish grammar part 3

"Ever said something in Spanish and had whoever you were talking to look blankly back or reply in English? Your grammar is probably horrible."

Cool site.

Cool site.
Very often if you speak passable spanish to young portenos, but with a foreign accent, they will insta-respond in english before you even have a chance to butcher the grammar. It's more a case of them trying to make your life easier because you're demonstrating that you're willing to do the same. It is friendly but not very conducive to practicing the language.

Glad you are enjoying it. Bananas should be able to be found at any supermarket. I just purchased some 3 days ago in Coto (chain of supermarkets). Probably your neighborhood chinos have a fruit stand as well. Shouldn't be hard to find. Is there some sort of banana drought or something?

(I have a feeling that this is some new codeword for drugs or something. I'm only 27 and I already feel out of touch. Reminds me of a Ween song)

uhhh,

This thread was addictive. Finally made it through and feel I can post now.

6 months in BsAs for like $10,000 seems like a good investment. I'll make the arrangements hopefully get down there before winter hits in Michigan.

I am 19, withdrawing from college this fall, and planning to travel perpetually for the time being. Next 3 months are gonna be spent financing a retirement in BsAs.

Great thread, Great input from all you guys down there and I'll let you know when I get in.

Question:

I went to South Africa last summer... Cape Town, Plettenburg, a bunch of places within several hours of Cape Town, I went to the worlds largest commercial bungee jump, saw some animals and crap, the driving thru the country was beautiful.

However, i could NOT walk thru the streets of Cape Town without people asking for money. this one black guy came up behind at one point, slapped the back of my leg with his hand, and goes "white guy!"

stuff like this is very offputting to me and also the fact that i didnt have internet for a week sucked. BASICALLY, i was THRILLED to be coming back to USA.

based on the stuff i just wrote, would I dislike BA?

im thinking i should just do a week or 2 trip some time over the winter, bring my laptop, and check it out

There will be beggars nearly everywhere you go. But from my experience it isn't necessarily a 3rd world thing as it is a big city thing. However, I will say that there are many more here than I remember seeing the last time I was in New York City. Sadly as well, a large portion of them are children which is something I didn't see in the US or in Europe. Never been slapped or had any of them ever really touch me like the way you spoke. Occasionally while waiting for a subway train, I've had a kid pull on my jacket sleeve and ask for change but that is about it.

I think things concerning the internet might have already been addressed but I've had a couple of long periods without it that were really frustrating. But I had that same **** with incompetent Comcast in the US. The last time when I was without internet for 5 days or so I told the guy that came to fix it that I would like to take his phone number and if this happens again, could I call him directly instead of going through the company and waiting. I said I would make it worth his while if he came on the same day and he was open to the idea. I haven't had to call him yet though.

I am going through this whole thing instead of cramming for a test in the morning, so dont hate me if it was already covered as I am doing my best to multitask -

Anyone here have experience working an actual job down there for an American based company? I pretty much never play poker anymore, and teaching english is kinda meh. If someone has done this, what is the typical work day like in BsAs... I know that all the restaurants and clubs have weird hours, does working a "regular" job interfere with getting to know the place as opposed to if you were to be an english tutor?

Shouldn't you just cram for the test?

I got Swiss Medical, I think the $90 a month plan. Better than anything I've had in the US so far. I have the name of the agent I used somewhere if you'd like it.

Yeah maybe if I didn't realize school is a sucker-bet.

I'll definitely start actively participating in this thread in anticipation of my grand exit of the US for BsAs. Obviously this is a bit in advance (>1 year imo) but is there/would there be any sort of interest in a BsAs Poker House? Even though I pretty much never play seriously anymore, recreational games are still alright in my book and it'd be nice to shack up with like minded guys in their 20s. And if you play/love soccer, even better. No River Plate fans though.

When I had read these threads in the past I had sort of just decided that I'd wait until I get there and then buy a cell phone. (My current phone is from Sprint so it is useless.) Since I don't know anything much about phones in the first place this seemed like the simplest solution because I know for sure I'll be getting something that works down there. But then I was remembering that electronics are really expensive, so maybe it would be better to get something before I leave. Thoughts on that?
